  • Despite belonging to different language families, French and Turkish have many common words as a result of French loanwords in the Turkish language. Despite Atatürk's reforms, most of the French loanwords are still widely used in Turkish today. We showcase some of the words shared in common between Turkish and French, as Şimal, a Turkish speaker from Turkey and Emeline, a French speaker from France, challenge each other with a list of words and sentences. The Turkish language (Türkçe), which is also referred to as Istanbul Turkish, is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages, with most of its native speakers living in Western Asia, and significant group of speakers in Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Northern Cyprus, Greece, the Caucasus, and other parts of Europe and Central Asia. Ottoman Turkish, which was a variation of the Turkish spoken today, influenced many parts of Europe during the time that the Ottoman Empire expanded. When the modern Turkish republic was established, one of Atatürk's Reforms consisted of changing the Ottoman Turkish alphabet with a Latin alphabet. Today, Turkish is recognized as a minority language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Iraq, Macedonia, and Romania.
French (française) descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages. French has evolved from Gallo-Romance, the spoken Latin in Gaul, and more specifically in Northern Gaul. Today, French is one of the most widely spoken languages in the word and a French-speaking person or nation is often referred to as Francophone in both English and French. French is an official language Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Canada, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, France, Gabon, Guinea, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Mali, Monaco, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Switzerland, Togo, and Vanuatu. French is spoken as a first language in many parts of the world outside of France, including the Canadian province of Quebec, and among large communities in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick, and numerous other places including parts of the United States such as Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Since so many of you requested this video on Instagram, we have decided to do it, even though I am sure there will be complaints about the fact that these are purely just French words. Despite Atatürk's language reforms, French loanwords are still widely used in Turkish today. Hope you enjoy the video!

Most of the people think that French language influence in Turkish is because of reforms of Atatürk, but you're totally right; it was during ottoman period that most of the french words were started to be used by Turkish people.

learn Turkish through English soooo wrong way.
From French, you can learn English, Spanish, Italien, portugese maybe but if you wana learn Turkish leave your brain at home. While we study English at schools, our English teachers (all of them) advice this. they insist do not think Turkish and do not learn via translation. Hole word order, grammer is opposite and even there is tenses in English that Turkish not and Turkish tenses that English has not. Also cultures are different for example Turks drink soup, not eat. Turkish put on şapka-heat does not wear.
There is no gender on nouns in Turkish.
there is no have/has in Turkish.

Yes, these words got into turkish with very similar sounding pronounciation because in the late ottoman period it was a must for a high-born person to speak fluent French or English. And during that period the elite people of the ottomans were strongly influenced by French culture. After the Turkish Republic was founded, the official way of talking was chosen to be the "elite turkish", so these words became some of the simplest words that you may hear in a basic turkish conversation.

Leo luster was right Ignorance is such a bad thing. Our clothes are not morroccan, they are mostly Turkish if you consider Turkey is one of the leading countries in Textile and Confection industry. Yes, Turkish people are mostly Muslim and Islam is Arab-based religion. Before Islam Turks had their own ancient religion called “Tengrism” you can still find Turkic peoples who accept Tengrism. About Hagia Sophia, we never said its Turkish. Everyone knows that its East Roman. Turkish language is one of the oldest languages in the world. It is an Asian language which is in Ural-Altaic language family. In Turkish we have lots of French, Arabian and Persian “loan” words as you have dozens of Turkish words in Greek. In Ottoman times many ethnic groups lived together and of course they were effected from each other and It also shaped Turkish culture as well as Turkish cuisine and language. And It explains why Turkish people eat Greek, Arabic, Armenian origined food in Turkey or Greek and Balkanic people eat Turkish food even they call them in Turkish like “yoğurt” , “sarma”, “dolma” In addition Turkish cuisine doesnt just consist of Kebabs ( arabic origin ) baklava or sth. Even every town in Turkey has their own special food...

@Fat Earther Her accent is Turkish, she has Turkish accent, and she is Turkish/Turk from Antalya/Turkey. There are of course Turkish in America, Turkish Americans but she was born in Turkey and studies in Canada, she has Canadian citizenship, not American. American is a national term, not a racial anyway. We Turks don't have a rough accent, it is kind, and we don't have hard letters for English, that's why it is easy to speak any other languages with in. Yes she is very educated about accent. Well our some dumb teenagers when they migrate to english speaking countries or have to use English, they are very obsessed and careful about and tries hard to speak with English American accent/in true accent, they think it makes look them cool. But I think everyone should be relax, in time you can start to speak with it already. Especially Turkish students in Usa and Canada do that alot (I don't mean for Turkish people born and living in English speaker countries and that uses English as native languages there).
