- Finally we get an update on the $1,800 VW Touareg.
Check out the other videos we made about picking up this car. What a trip, links below:
Part 1: • I Bought a $1,800 VW T...
Part 2: • Driving 1,000 Miles Ho...
I had to pause this video. I’m looking to buy a used one so I found your videos, And omg it’s making me second guessing getting it lol Plus the battery under the seat? Iv never heard of that . Now was it worth it?
Probably a bad chain tensioner that let one of the cams to slip a tooth, incorrect valve timing could also cause low compression. this also explains the cam timing code.
You probably need a passenger rear cam chain adjuster. Remove the timing belt, remove sprocket, remove valve cover, swap. With the air and rear locker don’t sell it.
Ah I knew this was going to be the issue as soon as the video started. That engine has a common problem with timing tensioners disintegrating. If you get a second hand engine, check it’s history to see if the tensioners and belts were replaced at least before the 100,000 mile mark... have seen some tensioners disintegrate at 60,000 and under. Looks like an otherwise great car, goodluck!
Still not working good, this kit hasn’t got chain and tensioner that must be replaced you have to buy it separately and changing them. Anyways maybe there in us is really expensive to buy other engine, so hope you will sell it in a good price
They did the timing chain and didn't replace the plugs to begin with?
I have an ‘04 Touareg and it’s a love hate relationship. Has a bad electrical draw, exhaust leak, interior trashed, but mechanically and cosmetically on the outside its great so I’m torn on whether I want to “restore it” or get rid of it.
I have been there. They aren't worth much so it's hard to put more money into them.
I would find another shop to diagnose your cars. Just by cranking the engine I could hear is low on compression in a couple cylinders. Loose timing belt they should have brought the engine to TDC and looked at the cam timing. Also you should have had cam/crank correlation faults. I would love to have a car like that. Love the interior/color Combo. Yea, not cost effective to replace engine. Used is 1200-1800 plus at least that to install plus doing seals gaskets etc.
Yea, I was super excited to drive that touareg for the winter.
I just went through all this with my touareg check your Cam chain tension er's there is another part of the timing that they did not do this one on the front side of the motor and 1 on the back side one dose exshaust valves the other is intake valves If those aren't working right that will also cause low compression if you take the valve covers off you'll see them theres a chance you might have a few bent valves mine did I fixed mine now it runs👌
Thanks for the info!
@@spottedeuros1529 your welcome
Gotta love the auto maintenance biz. Spend a bunch of money on a "fix" that isn't a fix then spend some more on another "fix". ...and another ...and another. Oh, and why would they wait until the third try to run a compression test?
Seems like a compression test, which is easy to do, should have come sooner? Rod knock is a killer and you drove it for hours without much oil.
Hard to do a compression test if it's not timed correctly.
I need those front seats
Hey sorry to hear about the Touareg I remember the last video you had the cam position sensor code how did they find what the problem was or was it because of the timing chain being so worn ? I’m stuck with that problem still it’s not caused my fuel to fire at the wrong time cause extremely high fuel pressure 🙈
Bronwyn Vlogs the timing belt was so loose that the engine wasn’t in the correct timing. Once they put in the new tensioner and timing belt that code went away.
Spotted Euros thank you for the update! I had VW check my timing they found it perfect actually unfortunately they say it could be a wiring issue haha I wish Utah wasn’t so far so I could take it to your repair shop!
So know we know get a new engine ill miss my touareg damn 😢
Former owner likely decided to neglect it, run it without scheduled maintenance until timing got bad enough to bend valve stem(s). Once that happens w. these VW interference motors, they tear themselves apart. Knock on wood my V8 keeps running for a few more years. 126K w. 2nd Timing Belt, Pulleys, Water Pump, Steering Angle Sensor, Thermostat Regulator.
As previously mentioned, Very Expensive to own, but wonderful in the winter, trailering
I'm in Utah and have a 2010 tdi. Who is the local mechanic shop you use? Mine runs great but has the occasional engine code P03a2... Can't figure it out
The shop I use is called Jimmy Love Bug in Provo. Not sure how much V10 experience they have. Not sure how much anyone really has. haha They are a good shop. Tell me I sent you.
I like your cut your losses attitude.
This is a VW shop??? They said change the timing belt?!?! Fire up the parts cannon. Boom, boom, boom. LOL. How about TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS! Hahahaha. I had the same issue on my 4.2 widebody A6 C5 Quattro. Both my plastic upper/lower shoes were fine so I just installed another tensioner on the driver's side and it is quiet as mouse now. Love your ATHEO wheels! There is one here in Ohio for $600 that needs valves and a fender I may well pickup. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
Yea I’m not sure how familiar they were with Touaregs. The head mechanic recently changed and I’m not a fan of the new guy. Unfortunately looks like I need to find a new mechanic.
How much would it cost to swap the engine with your other one .... and then sell it for parts and keep this one ?-)
Defiantly an option but it would take a ton of time.
So what was the issue?? Could it be fixed and it just didn't make sense to invest?
shawn72251 I still have it and it still isn’t fixed. I think it worth fixing as long as it doesn’t start the snowball. It really doesn’t run as bad as you would think. You can barely feel it misfiring. At least that what I tell myself. Ha
Engine coils
Hey man, just do yourself a favour and get the 5L V10 tdi. Buy a good one from a dealer as those auction cars can be too dodgey imo. It will be the best option for you as youll have all the towing power in the world
A V10 would be awesome!
Try a $10 bottle of engine restore. It’s worth a shot. Check out the Project Farm channel.
Unfortunately or fortunately it's not a ring issue. Bent value issue.
that's too bad. being in such great shape i would like to see an engine swap... easy for me to say ! my tdi touareg is fabulous when it works... a pain in the wallet when it doesn't work. cannot imagine driving any other SUV.
d h me either. I’m sure I’ll get another one soon.
How much does an installed rebuilt motor cost?
Probably $3,000 to have someone els do it.
@@spottedeuros1529 Wow. Seems reasonable, but you now have a high mileage Toureg to sell with $5 -6k into it. Your choice to auction it to cut losses seems practical.
Did you ever get rid of it? Pleas get back with me,please. Thank you.
I still have it.
@@spottedeuros1529 did you ever get it going, or did you use it for parts?
Bummer, I’m sorry it didn’t work out, at least you are only into it for 1600$. I was looking at the Toureg tdi because it is a very potent package. I mean 7700 pound tow capacity for a sportute that size. Amazing? I had a former vw manager warn me off the Toureg because he said that it could get expensive to maintain one. The thing that scares me about the tdi is the timing chain system can wear out and begin to rattle on cold starts. So I’ve backed away from that idea even though I love the Toureg. I didn’t want a pickup and the Toureg is a nice option to have my cake and eat it too being able to tow a decent sized travel trailer and still have a car that handles and drives nicer than a ginormous pick up truck.
Exactly. People are afraid of them. I think mainly because of the reliability of other european suvs. I currently drive a 2009 Tdi. I have made some videos on that. Check them out. Tows great and is a great daily driver.
I did view your mini eike gauntlet run. Love the tdis especially when you chip them to get a little more power.
I have a 05 engine running excellent drive shaft new body BOGUS!!! If you’re looking to sell I’m looking to buy?
Maybe I am. Where are you located?
@@spottedeuros1529 I live in Gulfport Mississippi
But if the price is reasonable I’ll come to you if you’re not tooooo! Far
@@coastluxurydetails4699 I’m pretty far. I’m in Utah.
@@spottedeuros1529 what’s your price
So you take it in for a misfire and first they say it's the intake manifold, then its timing belt, THEN spark plugs (it in for a misfire), THEN FINALLY a compression test??? You should find a better shop. Hope they changed your fuel contaminated oil at least
You can't do a compression test if the engine isn't timed correctly. Still pretty frustrating though.
Was it out of time actually or the belt was just loose/stretched? I'm guessing it was still in time if it is doing exactly the same thing. All I'm saying is they went backwards in the diag
Sounds like more money than brains...find a new mechanic....
Try a double dose of this resursmotor.com/next/index.html . It is very popular in europe for engine restoration. It might help with the compression
Maybe. Not sure it will help a bent valve though.
Change your mechanic first 😄
V8 out and a used TDI in!
That would be cool. Tdi with Air.
Mod it. Drop a GM LS in her!
That would be so cool!
Spotted Euros: I bet there’s someone here on YT that’s ready, willing and able to handle it. Just imagine!
I was gonna half seriously suggest this too. Who knows, you might be able to make the cost of the whole car back from parting out the engine lol.
“It doesn’t sound too bad...” starts Touareg - absolutely horrible sounding engine, really really unhealthy whine
That shop sucks
