Band of Brothers is a 2001 American war drama miniseries based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's 1992 non-fiction book of the same name. It was created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who also served as executive producers, and who had collaborated on the 1998 World War II film Saving Private Ryan. Episodes first aired on HBO starting on September 9, 2001. Critically acclaimed, the series won the Emmy and Golden Globe awards for best miniseries.

The Easy is sent to capture the Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest at the top of the Kehlstein mountain in Berchtesgaden, southern Germany in Bavaria. The roads are blocked by obstacles put in place by Hitler’s last faithful and the members of the E-Company take care of clearing them. (D-Day Overlord)

I can't believe it has been two decades since Band of Brothers were made. It still feels like yesterday.
I was slightly unnerved upon reading very recently that the composer of the magnificent score had died in 2003.
Can you imagine being one of the first soldiers to set foot in Hitler's Eagle's nest? The treasures and war trophies up there must have been overwhelming to Easy Company after nearly a year of hard and bloody fighting, not to mention the view!

I believe in Greece the Greek Resistance something like 200,000 died out of a population of 7million. Not including 600,000 from systematic starvation from the Germans during occupation. German soldiers lost during the Resistance and War close to 25,000 german troops where killed.
The story of Easy Company reminds me that in spite of all the hoopla raised about elite forces, it is the regular American infantry man and paratroopers that always seem to demonstrate determination, courage and intestinal fortitude when it comes to fighting battles. They make me proud to be an American. Thank you to all the service people of the United States who serve our country and our Constitution 🇺🇸

Dale Dye has contributed his military expertise in so many movies. My favorite was when he (Col. Briggs) got to arrest Donald Sutherland (General McClintock) in Outbreak on Morgan Freeman's (General Ford) orders.

Yeah...that's my problem with BoB, the "military" part of the show is filled with inconsistencies and inaccuracies like that. Thats why i prefer The Pacific, a better overall series.
@@fabioa.8008 I agree! Which is strange because first I thought The Pacific was inferiour to BoB when I watched it. But I guess BoB "spoiled" it for me a bit, being really the first WW2 series I watched. It didn't feel as "heroic" in a sense, it was a lot more depressing.
Over time though, The Pacific really left a better impression on me than BoB and now I think it's actually better.

Contributions were made on all sides, however, there wouldn't have been anything to march into had it not been conquered to begin with. IE the French lost thier own country to Germany.
Ww1 seen the average Frenchman go from 5ft 11 to 5ft 6in tall. If numbers like that don't make you realize the French haven't had military prowess since napoleon then I don't know what to tell you.

Let's recap : the French entered in Paris first because the Allies let them do so (maybe, but probably way more complex than that) and you claim it is true because there are images of Germans troops in Paris...
I hope you can see the flaws in this reasoning.
And if you want to go that way, you are forgetting that the only reason the US citizens don't pledge to the King of Britain anymore is thanks to the French (Lafayette and Surcouf should ring a bell to any history enthusiasts)

The French tend to be there on day one, with no time to cozily prepare ;)
And they successfully held the ground while the UK armies (defeated as well against Germany) fled back to their island, the Belgian, Dutch and Polish were already preparing their peace treaties.

The ‘phony war’ period was a time wherein no one really did anything, this is because despite definitely being able to do so the French refused to actually invade Germany. The French never got to the fight, it was taken to them, that is until they showed up to help liberate France and push into Germany. The US showed up right on time really for the proper fight, before D-Day the majority of ground combat was in North Africa and the USSR.

@@stitch77100 Funny how everyone always makes fun of the US for being three years late to the war, while a) ignoring the massively important Lend Lease and other forms of aid, and b) not knocking the Soviet Union for the same thing (who only began fighting the Germans six months before the Americans - three if you count the skirmishes in the Atlantic in early September).
@@johnkirsch5479 we never said we forgot about the lend lease program, even if it was the USA basically selling materials and equipment to its allies, instead of actually just helping them. (Like France never asked for the USA to pay for its canons and guns to get rid of the red coats 150 years prior.)
Plus, the US only started to fight in the Pacific, so not really anywhere close to Germany if I know my geography...
The first actual fight for US troops was their North African landing, one year after entering war, with help from the British and the Free French Forces (and some others) which were already fighting there since 1940... Otherwise, USA was at war but not actually fighting, only replenishing their fleet and safe to turn all their economy for military production. And it was only after the Aussies showed them what fighting really meant (Doolittle raid) that the US started really fighting back against the Japanese and stopped losing. All the while not being even touched on their mainland territory, and having no damage to their industry or population...
On the other hand, USSR was at peace with Germany until mid 1941, having a (secret) non aggression pact. The German betrayed them and attacked them (so, destroying towns, industries and killing civilian populations) and Russia has to fight back immediately, not having the luxury to choose to wait like the US did.
That's the main difference, and it's a big one IMO.

Fun fact, part of the reason the western front went so well was because so much of the Germans forces were being focused on the Soviets. Rommel was constantly asking for newer/better tanks, or just more tanks in general, but was constantly denied because those assets were being sent East. Several times the forces were outright pulled from the West to go to the east.
This is the part of war that pisses a guy off….the commander wants to get there before the French. Your supposed to be on the same side FFS, instead you have old entitled pricks playing with soldiers lives because they want to be first.

It's quite sad tho some guys in the US army at the time didn't want to cooperate or even acknowledge the fact France fought a hell of a defense against 100 to 1 odds and tried to defend millions and millions of innocent people while you sat around and watched them die, then had the gull to try to gloat.. disgusting. Germany had *secretly* piled up a huge number of armored cores and fought unconventionally without alot of infantry support..when ur expecting to fight 20 tanks and 10,000 men instead you get 1000 tanks and 1000 men, nobody could handle that....
Even more sad when you realize the Americans wanted to beat the French to capture spots and their own city of Paris and steal their hard fought glory. (And the French never actually surrendered. citizens fought guerrilla warfare until liberated. The rest got whisked away and operated overseas as the French government... The nazi sympathizers that were left formed a new government and then surrendered to the Nazis another thing most of you dont know....)
But when the Revolutionary war that founded the US happened the French were the ones who won youre victory. They sent troops, ships, supplies , trained officers and lead battalions of men to fight for America and they kept winning.. AND they kept the whole of the Royal Navy occupied AND shelled forts, gun placements and fortified positions for months until the British surrendered... They didn't want to march through Washington as youre saviors, they didn't want huge parades, they wanted to help. You wanted to be the guy who sat on the bench the whole game and just wanted to score the game winning point. The French actually wanted to help... And they did. And they didn't gloat, prance around or try to belittle the Union for almost losing to the rebels...

Somehow I find it ironic about the comment on the French. Perhaps the US forgot it was the French who helped them win their independence against the British.
Of course, but remember, the Allies just pulled France out of the fire after being absolutely walked over at the beginning of the war. Additionally, the American Revolution was about than 150 prior to WW2, so the relationship had significantly changed. And lastly, the way Col. Sink says it, it's not charged with malice or contempt, in fact, it sounds more like friendly competition.
If military men and women cant tease their oldest ally, then there isnt comraderie to begin with

That Nueve ? I don't think you got your story right there mister XD. They were given the privilege to enter first, being part of the French division and considered French by almost everyone at the time, and were not a Spanish corps, but volunteered to fight for the Allies under French command.
And you know why ? Because Spain was not part of the Allies, but actually helped Germany during the entirety of the war, even planning to fight against Britain if need be.
There is a reason no one speak about Spain in WW2 other than the 9th armoured company, and its not the one you want to be remembered for, believe me...
So yeah, keep telling yourself lies and rewriting history if you want to, the Nueve only fought as part of the Free French Forces, and was lead by General Leclerc (the one whose name was given to the latest French tank) which had many more companies under its command, whose soldiers were French and international volunteers.
As for the incompetence of French soldiers, your best troops at the time were the one led by a French officier... What does that tell about competency in Spanish troops or chain of command ?

You need to add every zone in WW1, from Verdun to Stonne, even pushing to Bulgaria towards the end of the war.
And that's only the world conflict, there have been countless other conflicts involving less participants in which France played a massive role.

Eisenhower’s biggest fear was that Hitler would get to the Eagle’s Nest, where he would be well protected and have radio facilities he could use to broadcast to the German people to continue the resistance or begin guerrilla warfare. It turned out that the Germans had neither serious plans nor sufficient resources to build a Mountain Redoubt, but remember we are only four months away from a time when everyone assumed the German Army was kaput, only to be hit by the Bulge. So the fear was there, but the reality was that in its drive to Berchtesgaden, Easy was as much as 100 miles behind the front line, in a reserve position, never threatened.
But the Battle of the Bulge had already happened? Or are you saying because of the Bulge the fear was a massive counter attack awaited?

The reason for the negative comment about the French is simple: They acted like they liberated France and not the Brits and US.
They liberated Paris without a single help from the Allies because "It was a waste of time, nothing more than a trace of ink on their maps". Yet decided to liberate Aachen because it had "Symbolic values". American and UK treated france like shit the entire war.

there is both a very real history of French cowardice, and also a very real history of ignoring the French and giving little credit to the very sizeable Resistance movement. the truth is France wouldn't have been liberated without either the other Allies or the Resistance.

When I was in 5th grade, we would burn trash outside. My brothers and I pretended that the trash was "Hitler's House" 🏠 as the fire engulfed it. Sometimes we would even arrange it to look like a dwelling of some kind.

My father in law was with the 10th Mtn Div who took Mussolini’s mountain lair crossing Lake Garda and fighting the SS to the retreat.
The 10th crossed the Po River, 23 April, reached Verona, 25 April, and ran into heavy opposition at Torbole and Nago. After an amphibious crossing of Lake Garda, it secured Gargnano and Porto di Tremosine, 30 April, as German resistance in Italy

Ironically, the americans troops arriving at the village and starting to loot it, thought they had reached the Eagle's Nest, and so the french were the first there.

A lot of the 2e DB vets had been fighting the Axis since 1940.
Some since 1936.
I guess they deserved neither that kind of reward nor recognition of their actual place in the events.

@@darrengarcia4937 Depends how you look at it. Against a single front wehrmacht which rearmed in secret, so with a headstart, and the support of the emerging superpowers, the USSR and USA no less, sure.
But against the same enemy as the other allies, in the same conditions, an enemy that was fighting, they performed better than british...Or american troops.
In fact, guess who the germans considered the best fighters after themselves ?
