I reduced networking from 3U (a patch panel, a switch, and a shelf for router and firewall) to effectively 1U.
Kept the router and firewall at the front on the shelf at the very top unit, and mounted the switch at the back on that same unit space. The patch panel is just under the switch, because I intentionally populated the second unit down with a server that was short enough and rails that don't interfere with the patch panel.
Running networking at the back also has the perk of making for shorter network runs within the rack, so it has a slight cost benefit and reduces packet loss/interferences, especially when using some old refurb hardware that's a bit dodgy.

Yep: that's a challenge most of us have I guess. One way out could be adding silent hardware that can be used outside the rack. I have a fanless firewall now, that I can use in the living room. And I moved some vm's to a silent workstation. And yeah: using vm's also saves network ports :)
For 10gbe I got lucky and got a 1u cisco enterprise switch at an auction. So that has all the ports I need. Although it's very noisy :)
So yeah: those are the challenges I guess: space, powerconsumption, noise and heat :) Fun to play with though :)

Why not just buy the 25U version of this rack?

here is my suggestion - one- don't worry about it so much and here's why - great admins are lazy, just plop another 4-8u on top - problem solved but you want to keep improving and try to edge back to nice and neat and manageable eventually obviously so do this - build out another system to replace power sucking unraid and then virtualize opnsense and passthrough a 25 or 40gbe card or two - you may be able to kill two birds with one stone and consolidate a bit while still saving power, keeping things cooler and also upgrading too. i would not go to 1u - build in bigger cases to make it easier - you have plenty of space if you just stack a little and such - it should get more manageable longer term with consolidation but don't go overboard - you still want options and redundancy - rack mgt is a balancing act and you are still growing so be patient and diligent and i think you will find good solutions

Im not far enough down the rabbit hole that I have even considered buying a rack... just a DIY NAS / VM machine and a spare computer I use as a seedbox, maybe in a couple years ill buy a rack, I love the functionality of them!

That 4U rosewill is a waist of space in a rack that short. It only has 12 drive bays. An R720XD has the same 12 bays and takes up 2U less space. If the only service its providing is an Unraid host, an R720XD is office desktop quiet. If you have to go 4U, maximize your space with a 24 bay chassis.

3:49 Yeah I had mine like that, one at the front, then the other on the back of that same U, that worked fine, ended up consolidating them come upgrade time. Good if you have easy access to the back.

this is why I got the 25U rack instead of the 18! I have plenty of free Us (for now) but it's slowly adding up!
Maybe you could sell the 18U you have and get the 25U ? you'll spend money, but if you can sell it for a few hundreds it might not be a bad idea (at least way cheaper than getter new 1U case/fans/cooling etc...)

I have a 22U rack from the 70s LOL I'm completely out of space. I have atleast 12 more U worth of equipment that just isn't racked up like it should be. I'm good for the networking side of it all. I just need some vertical Us.

Just picked up a 42u with sides and doors, now I just have to get the time to take the old rack apart...
