i have had it where the gasket between the reed block and the carb isn't big enough. Had the problem on my P41, had me scratching my head. Pioneers and Homelites are some of the best sounding saws. Reeds forever!
TINMAN THE PIONEER FACTORY WAS 40 MINUTES FROM MY HOUSE ,,PETERBOROUGH ONTARIO MY LANDLORD KNOWS SOMEONE THAT WORKED THERE ,,THE MAN GAVE MY LANDLORD A P42 WITH NO HOURS ON IT PRETTY COOL SAWS BRAND NEW NOS
It’s definitely oiling great! Sounds good brother!!! She’s choochin’!!!! That’s a beautiful little full wrap handle… I freakin love that green color! I just got a homelite 1050! 100cc quad reed valve momma… I can’t wait to jump into this old girl! 😂👍. I’m starting to really like the older one’s! They all need a pipe! Those P40’s are a great size saw too!!! Me too! I’m in love with it too! A 28 with skipper!!! I’m not a canook but that makes me proud for y’all!!! Right on!!!
We still have the power head to my grandfathers old Pioneer Farm-Saw. I remember watching him and my father in the woodlot during the summer cutting trees for some fire wood before winter came. They had two Pioneer Farm-Saws, one in black and orange, which it the one we still have and the other in Pioneer Green/Yellow. The green/yellow one was traded in toward a Husqy some years ago as it had some problems. But they were always treated as the "just-in-case" saw for when the trees got too big. They always ran smaller Homelites for limbing and buckin the wood into portions. :)
I used a old hand me down pioneer back in 1970, it was my first saw. Don't remember the model, but it was heavy enough to put hair on your chest after a few weeks of packing it in steep mountains. 😆 have a great day.
Put a carb kit in my p25 pioneer but it still fires and dies, maybe fuel lines, maybe seals, a work in progress for sure. The paint was all there till I started cleaning it up. That's when the paint started falling off... she's turdy alright but I can't wait to get her cutting again. Great video Tinman look forward to any and all pioneer vintage content. Sweet p40.... good stuff always.... Mahalo Tinman🤙🤙🤙...Tdawg.
Did you use an actual Carb kit, or China carb? You gotta make sure the H and L are set to factory manual( like 3/4 turn out, etc)......I've had those junk china carbs be like 3 TURNS out on a saw that should be 3/4.....lol......but usually when a saw Starts and Dies, it's the Carb settings.....or piston could be fried.
My father had the exact same saw if I recall (I don't think it's a P41). 1975 vintage or so. I've inherited this saw, I'll have to look in the shed. My saw is a little weak in compression, probably worn-out piston rings. It's been modded from points ignition to electronic ignition by our local shop and I remember my father saying it gave it a little bit more power. He used pioneer saws as a lumberjack in the 60's and said to me that, contrary to the McCullochs and some other brands, never tun at WOT through entire cuts, as you'll end blowing these saws. They have a lot of RPM in them. Always throttle them through a cut. That said my father always ran his saws a little bit on the oily side (a little bit more oil than necessary) It is probably why the saw survived years of use and abuse (18-25 cords per winter). I will try to revive my saw in a more or less distant future; the chain and plates are also worn out.
I can smell the two stroke from here…. Oh wait that’s me. Love those reed ported pioneers. If one of your holzfforma bars is a husky mount it should slide right on
It seems similar to my Partner 350 from the 80's. I got it for free from a friend to cut some fire wood and it works perfect. Impressingly light weight.
I’ve been looking forward to you hooking into this one for ages. I’m sitting on two P41S chainsaws and am excited to see what you can make of yours as a point of reference. Good luck Tinman and keep pulling fat chips 👊
I’m 51 now and I remember dad teaching me to mix fuel for a 1960’s Lawn Boy mower. It had to be mixed at 16:1 or an 8 oz. can of Lawn Boy mix oil. In 1979 dad bought a new Lawn Boy and it was 32:1 so dad bought a Ratio Rite measuring cup. He put a mark on 4 oz. to help me. I have loved 2 strokes in every form since then from radio control to motorcycles to saws.
Just found your channel and subbed, I love old vintage saws and collect them, just recently got my Homelite C5 running and it's a quad reed saw, 4 reeds! That old Pioneer sure sounds great!
HEY tinman buddy I also remember pioneer chainsaws when I was a kid in the 1970S you 😉😀 don't 👀 see them any more cutting wood all of those are old OLD SCHOOL I LOVE a another animal by their self 😀😄 OMG 2 2 2022
Love those saws I have a P42 and a poulan pro 655 witch is a P62 just newer great saws but my favorite saw is my McCulloch pro Mac 8200 now great show my friend thank you for your videos
Awesome , thanks for this video !! I have the identical saw ,has loads of compression and spark but isn't getting fuel so now I know to change the line and do the carb. I had a feeling that I'd have to do the carb and now I know . Such a cool saw though. I also have a 1074 but it's not getting spark so that's another day project lol.
Hey Tinman, thanks for the vid. As usual you are a wealth of information but best of all its great getting up on a cold northern Sat AM and having a vid to watch…..kinda gets the juices going. I have a pro mac 650 with almost no hours thats been in storage for 30-35 years and its time to get at er. I think that saw is a little different for a Mac. I believe it was actually made in California probably at the time the company was in transition.
Wow you got lucky, seemed like just needed the carb tightened or the jets just right but seals seem OK! That's something I always find amazing about some old saws when the seals are still good and they are friggin 50 years + old. Just amazing and you'd never expect that. good old saw.
HEY tinman take the screen out of the muffler the chainsaw will get more air and breath better muffler can't be stopped up w carbon straight exhaust pipe will also help alot 😉👍OMG 2 2 2022
Excellent video my friend. I just purchased a nice looking little Homelite super xl 12. dont see many of them around my area and i wanted one as a kid. Its in the post so as you can imagine im like a kid waiting for xmas 😀😀😀😀😀 The small things right😀😀
@@tinmanssaws Yeah I been buying old saws ever since i started watching bukin then found the tinman,,, I got a p25, xl 76 and just got a homelite c51, they all run great.
Love my p -40. Just a great running powerful saw. Found out after watching this video I'm missing the big rubber carb boot though. Have a spare? Yeah, this winter has been brutal. Massive amounts of snow with temperatures 10 degrees below normal. As I type this we're getting our third blizzard in a month.
Hello Tinman Morning coffee and vintage saw video, great! When are you doing a follow-up video on this machine¿¿¿ Keep up the good work Rasmus, Denmark
That was someone's partner in the woods🌲 worked hard and pretty well maintained! I try to keep a roll of pigmat around, put sheets of it under saws on my shelf and use it on the bench for those messy projects!
I inherited an old Mac 2-10 after my great grandfather. The label on top say 20:1 SAE 40/50, or 40:1 premium two stoke oil. The whole thing smells like hydraulic oil, so I recon thats what he used as bar oil in the 60-70's. Can't wait to get that Mac running after finishing my second porting project😁
Not to take away from the pioneer, cause I really dig 'em, but I've been looking through your channel and I don't think I've seen any blue homelites. Now that's something I wouldn't mind seeing on your bench.
I would have to disagree on scraping the carbon without pulling the jug. The hole in the wrist pin is right in the centre and it is so easy to drop a piece of carbon vs leave it there. You could just as easily have carbon behind a ring so I'd pull the head and throw seals in it for the extra $15. Good job getting it going, I have just seen more guys cause big issues cleaning things. 24:1, 4cid 9500 rpm, 1973-6. Memory lane.
Hey ! Finaly it run well. When rep kitting a carburetor...could it not be like air bubbles in the carb...needed to be pushed through ...and thats why it bugged town several times before it settled ? Nice saw !
I had a customers cs-400 do this…. Fuel filter was dirty. Leaned out and said goodbye to the piston. The customer later told me he ran sea-foam through it because he couldn’t get it to run very well.
Ok Tinman, I will send an email when I did into my skilsaw, ( also a PM Canada saw),just got my mac 10/10 A going and into some wood, and will soon have my homelite super xl in some wood!may need to know who your carb kit suppliers are, as everyone one I have gotten here has been missing gaskets or something else!

The saw looks old man, but it's body is magnesium, made in 70's feels nice!
She's a runner. I love how the Ole Pioneer oilers flat out oil. For sure long bar saws. Love it. 🌲❤🌲👊🪓

I kinda get a chubby when they fire up for the first time!!!😂..i don't have any homelites or pioneer but your really making me want one!!!

Always nice when you can get 1 running in short order without much time/money invested in it.
Those pioneers run forever ! Such great saws. Ran a p62 years ago n trying to find one to buy now.

Great to hear that ol pioneer run! Grease the clutch drum bearing and cut some wood.
i am so old i remeber them. nice saw love the sound. take care, be safe and well.
Just got a Pioneer 600(and spare motor)..........gas tank is full of water/oil, hasn't run in 20+ years...... but it's a complete saw!
I had one like this over 30 years ago. It ate wood like candy
Great to see the old saws get another shot at livin.

Run some Echo Red in that P40 and it will clean up that piston. Fun video.
I just picked up my first mcculloch 10-10! This is going to help me so much getting it back to running! Thank you for the info

Like you videos , keep them coming

P40’s have such a good look about them 😎 love your videos Tinman 👍
That old saw was the best back in the day had a new one cutting pulp wood in the 70s
I have a P40 it's my favorite saw.
Awesome content tin man!
This was a blast! I continue to marvel at how great of a job you do of taking us along every step of the way, not hiding one single thing! Awesome! 👍💪

I love my Pioneers. Have both a P40 and a P41, they are my favorite saws.
Well I love the carb kit info thought I was screwed up for buying the cheap kits but they work. Cool Saw that one came to life quick
That’s a great beast!! Nice one bud!! I’ve got a soft spot for old Pioneers. I’ve got an old 2073 that needs work on the recoil.
Sweet saw man! Just picked up a p28 the other day

P26 has aluminum pull cord spool rather then plastic. I swapped it out in my p41. Plastic just can't take the stress.
Thanks for the tutorial. I have a P50 I am about to tackle.
I was given an old homelite mini chainsaw, it's tough to start but runs real good once it's started, probably needs the carb cleaned
Sweet ol saw buddy hope u are well. Have a good weekend.

Hey Bruce
The P20 I picked up last year was Carboned up the same way. Good to know why it was like that. Thanks!
I’m super excited. I have a farm saw that I inherited from the dad in-law. I’m looking forward to getting it going and eventually porting it.
I have one too and it pulls like mad. I’m still tinkering with it but it is a good saw
Sounds like you got it going good, now to see it cutting
What a lovely saw - a cool design and a nice amount of 'beausage'.
Back in the late 70s early 80s. We sale lot pioneers. For pioneer northwest I now have 4 of them that working
loved the video
