Hey tinman I do get Spruce logs that are about 3' in width or better in my area. Born and raised Alaskan, and I do alot of chopping so good to watch some entertainment when I'm taking some time off. I don't require alot of rest but I keep busy and maintaining my equipment is vital especially here in this part of the Country. I use a 23lb maul splitting axe which my dad handed to me. I ordered a 29lb splitting maul and I hope to get it along with a few parts ive ordered to keep my Homelite SuperXL running. Thanks for taking the time in providing entertainment. Great vids Tinman!

I know the function of reeds, but I liked the detail you included. To be honest I watched this so maybe this old timer may have to relearn that craft. I grew up on Homelites, by the time I grew up enough to fix them they were smoked.

My dad was telling me on the later XL12 homelite saws they changed the reed placement on the saw and those saws were not as good. Most people use to saw the red saws weren’t as good as the blue saw for that reason but my dad had one of the first years of the red saw and it was actually the same as the blue saw. Both his friends bought red saws I’m guess early 80s and those saws were problematic. Only difference my dad said he could see was the reed placement. If I remember correctly one was case feed and the problematic ones were cylinder feed. He’s still got my uncles XL 12 that only cut enough logs to build his house. It’s won’t run good consistently. My dad say one day his going to transfer that saw over to one of his old XL12 case feed saws to see if that solves the problem. He was always curious why the red saws got a bad wrap.

Neat seeing the Homelite reed setup -- I think all I've ever seen is on the old Poulans (and the Craftsman saws made by them) which people seem to keep giving me and my son. I think I should not defend Poulans like I do, but I have a soft spot in my heart for them :).

Please forgive me, I still think the average guy does not understand when you say case. That is where the crankshaft is, The crankcase is the intake manifold in my opinion. Ever since watching YOUR videos I understand this. I like the reeds that have screws holding them down. I flip them over as you said at 14:12. I have a few reed saws. They are great if the seals are good. When I say seals I mean the seals that are on the clutch side and the rewind sides of the crankshaft, plus all the connections for the carb and cylinder. PLEASE forgive me for mentioning this as you did. Homelite is like an old Chevrolet--- you can mix stuff up. They do flutter. My main saw is a Homelite 1020 100 cc !!!!!!. 4 reed saw. I am 67. (still videos coming out after the build) A friend gave it to me and I was the benificieary. Thanks Tim for all you do. Thanks again.

Hey tinman, thanks for sharing all of the knowledge on porting. I live in alaska, and in my area there aren't very big trees, so bigger saws are not very common. Most of the saws that you see are in the 50cc class. I am getting into porting because of your and buckin's videos. I watched your videos on how to port and I have ported a few saws now. A lot of the 50cc saws seem to be open transfer saws. My question is, are open port saws worth porting ?, and if so, what if anything would you do with the transfers? Thanks in advance.

Hey there TinBasher!!!, winter is definitely here buddy! I’m not the factory thermostat guy and I have always done a more specific thermostat based upon my geographic location… down in Florida I’m using a 160… don’t need engine heat.., up north I’m using a 190-200 over the 180 type because I want the northern truck higher faster for the defrost and heat… they are all going to run their original temperature once they get running around and they open up…. I’m running a 04 250 6.0 6sp manual transmission truck and it will pull down a house and on the Hyway in 6th and 2000 is 65-75… you can hit it and she’s going 140 at 3k or right past it… I’m definitely going to be playing around when I’ve blown the $ on my 4 new shoes for her one day… Awesome video and it’s just a fantastic information and teaching tool for all the guy’s who want to learn about saw’s!!!
I really wish that Farmertec or someone would clone the dang p-45/50. P65 model’s!!! I’d definitely grab one of everything just for my own enjoyment!!!

Be a fun project to cut down a 500 CC’s type dirtbike if you could find a great deal for some carbon fiber and have a bigger reed then you need so you can cut it into the right size and shape them up and possibly lightly sand them to make them work as perfectly as possible for you. I’ve been doing this whole saw building-porting hobby since I was crushed in 09’…. And I found Tree Monkey or Kunz and he was cutting the squish band with his homemade wooden based cutter’s and explaining that you’ll need a couple different species of wood as they all expand and contract with the different season’s and humidity…. So your 50mm cutter will change it’s diameter measurements across the season’s and I started making different jigs and tools and doing saw work as expensively as possible and learned some fantastic stuff from all you guys who share your knowledge and experience on RUclips videos! When I saw the cut-away 028? You made to explain the whole ignition process!!! I was just totally blown away by how incredibly awesome of a teaching tool that it was because… the opening and closing of those transfers is just so hard to understand and usually some trying to explain the whole process gets a novice even more confused… but bring showed how the moving piston was pushing the fuel charge and then how they are pulling in your new charge and how it moves through your system was just super cool!!! And I’d never seen a cutout teaching model on video before you posted yours??? I’ve sent a 1000 new guy question’s to various videos after I explain I tell them to watch your video and forward the video where you’re talking about it !
Also loved that you preached you’d rather help a guy do his own saw work so he could understand that whole incredible experience! Having a wicked saw’s great and having some other guy’s build’s would be awesome but building one that totally empress’s you after completed is just incredible!!! And actually building the tools to do that work… with your own two hands

Hey Tinman! Great vids. Love your enthusiasm, your appreciation for the old and that you humbly share what you know with all of us. I've gotta ask- is that a Homelite 410 directly behind you on the shelf? I've got one. They are pretty sleepy until you ditch the most restrictive muffler ever! Also worth noting, Homelite used reeds forever, then went piston port with the 350/360/450...750, but then went BACK to reeds for their last stand with the 410. They sure pack a punch, those 410s! They have a very unconventional intake too! Keep up the awesome work. Nate Dogg over in BC 🙂

a disadvantage not mentioned is that it is difficult getting the crankcase volume small enough. often reed engines will make gains reducing volume. another issue is the reed cage is usually an obstruction to air flow.

This video kind of segways into a broader question I've had. Do you have any particular tips or insights about porting old horizontal cylinder saws? There's a bunch around me right now for $25 to $50, and I've been thinking about picking up a few just for some winter shop. Tinkering. Do you find that there's much overlap between those older horizontal cylinder saws and modern saws as far as the portwork goes? Or are they pretty much their own animal?

So instead of using the bottom of the piston as a sliding valve for the case intake, the reeds work like a one way check valve? But the top of the piston still valves the transfer and exhaust ports?

    • @brettbrettson69

Thanks.... So on the HomeLites, is a safe port job to simply raise the exhaust roof by a few degrees to increase RPM but leave reeds and intake alone? The HomeLites 54 and 58 cc saws like XL12 and Super XLs seem to have plenty of torque but run slow at top end. So I'm thinking raising the exhaust roof a little will be something a rookie can safely do and not mess up the intake side. Advice please... Thanks again

    • @tinmanssaws
      @tinmanssaws  7 месяцев назад +1

Yes you can start there. The biggest issue with homelites at higher rpm is heat.
They run very hot, that's where a good pioe or muffler mod comes into play..

Only more powerful intake for a 2 stroke is a rotory valve. It's just harder to package with a carb hanging off the side of the case.
