Toranaga did everything he could to try and get through to him but he kid just kept learning all the wrong lessons. He gets led into a brazen assassination of a messenger on someone else's leash, and while this ends up serving Toranaga's needs, he tries to emphasize for Nagakado how foolish it is to be manipulated by others. He tries to teach him this repeatedly with his birds and otherwise. To teach him patience, awareness, and strategic caution. Instead, the lesson that Nagakado learns is, bafflingly, that he needs to be braver and more assertive. He suffers the consequences of learning that very wrongheaded lesson.
He was a doofus, but his heart was in the right place. I think he even managed to instill some good qualities in Omi, even though Omi was initially only out to use him.

1:55 Achara Kirk's keep observation of 12-year old Toranaga's lack of head chopping strength shows why she is not only much more observant and intelligent than the rest of us, but divulge her previous masked job as an executioner.
Achara is right about beheading being an inconsistent method of execution. It was so inconsistent that the entire purpose for inventing the guillotine (also known as "the national razor") was that it was guaranteed to be instantly fatal, and could do so many times in a day without the fatigue of a headsman.

When a warrior takes the head of his opponent after a battle, he does so to show his lord what deeds of valour he has performed. If he took the head of a samurai of high rank, he would show his head as proof and receive a reward to match his deeds. The heads of lower-ranking samurai were not taken as they were not eligible for rewards. It was necessary to verify the identity of the dead person. A warlord who loses a battle commits seppuku, thereby asking the victor to forgive his men. He took responsibility and in many cases his men were forgiven and survived.
This is the best show on tv at the moment. It is so good. I love how civilized the Japanese were, yet at the same time, so barbaric. It is a very interesting blend.
It's interesting because just as in the West, civility and barbarism both occur, we just choose what we acknowledge and accept depending on our different cultures. I mean Protestants and Catholics were also torturing and burning each other alive at this time and murdering locals in droves in the places they colonized.

Guys, I have a theory: If you go back to episode 6, near the end, when Mariko goes back to Toranaga’s tent to report on how Blackthorne’s night at the Tea House went, at the beginning of that scene, you’ll see Toranaga folding up a paper and throwing it into the fire in front of him. Whenever he’s about to make crucial war decisions, you always see him receiving or sending messages through his spies. I think the message we were not allowed to see on that paper MUST be related to the Crimson plan he has unfolding. It is also not a surprise then when we see his go-to SPY guy in episode 7 when his half brother is being welcomed into the village by the villagers. They focus in on him, which I think is subtly telling us “remember the role of Toranaga’s spies in relation to who you are seeing on screen.” If this is all true, this would make Shogun one of the smartest shows on television because they really plant seeds and expect their audience to be smart enough to connect the dots because nothing is “filler” or used to kill time on each episode. What do you guys think?? Let me know.
The thing I really can’t get over once I heard it in another video is the subtle power of translation and it’s role in the storytelling For example Mariko is given both power and burden in her translations, so often she’s tweaking people’s words on the fly to almost imbue ever so slightly different meaning or changing things slightly to be more palatable either for the social standing, the situation or to diffuse potential confrontation. It’s really fascinating, I think at face value you sort of think she’s giving a true translation and there’s one or two changed words but those extra words here or there can change the entire meaning, have a different impact and can change the intent behind the original words, it sort of goes back to Blackthorne getting the hard lesson on the weight of words.
@@Oakland510 Oh that’s 浮かれ女-Ukareme. We don’t use the word today and me personally didn’t get the word while watching it. It means prostitute. A courtesan.
EXCELLENT reaction! Yeah - the entire cast is excellent. And the women are fantastic. Especially the scene where Fuji would NOT give the gun over. Wow - the look on her face.
Remember the earlier line given to Toronaga "protect the heir from his enemies AND his friends". Toronaga is a master tactician, he conceals his "third heart" even from those closest to him. We see this play out brilliantly and dramatically in the next episode.
Yes. She knows. I’m thinking when Toranaga was away a few episodes back, he had visited his brother, and this is all a part of his plan to get into Osaka. Fighting from within. This has to flip. Toranaga is far too smart to have fallen into this trap. But his dim witted son again acted rashly, and paid for it. I think in a way, his uncle had warned him, while still playing his part.
Toranaga's surrender was a ruse. Unknown to the others, the half-brothers planned to march into Osaka on the false pretext of escorting toranaga. Once inside osaka, they will surprise Ishido.
Watching this ep with you again i came to the conclusion that if Toranaga-sama has a plan it may include the only wild card nobody expect and that leave the picture with that display of disrespectfulness by the Anjin. After his plead and loyalty maybe during that night Toranaga-sama gave him a purpose and he was at the beach watching the boats, maybe supervising something? idk, thats my guess/conclusion. Great Reaction and vid!
I was sat there with the sound of rain my main thought was "His dad is going to lose his shit now", his son has now opened the side we've not seen yet.
1:39 In the past great military leaders were sometimes very young. Gifted men who were trained for leadership since they were small kids. If I remember correctly Alexander the Great was younger than 20 when he defeated his greek and macedonian enemies, and started his campaign against the far bigger persian empire (which would become one of the greatest military campaigns in history). There are many examples of similarly young leaders achieving great victories. Now young men win campaigns only in videogames.
No, there's nothing beautiful about death, I've seen it enough to know that. "A stick of time". This series is wonderful, they have managed to explain a concept without using any words, all through images, that is the art of visual storytelling. Bravo!
Okay. Anyone else totally miss the foreshadowing of the sudden rain making Toranaga uncomfortable? Like, he got a bad feeling from it? As though taken by a strange foreboding dread?
Toronaga has at least one more son in this series that we know of. He’s married to the sister of Ochiba who was giving birth at the start of the show. His consort is also pregnant.
One thought-- by giving in, Toranaga has bought time. An immediate refusal would have meant instant battle with his brother's forces. And don't think that the army Toranaga has with him is the sum total of his followers. What might the other other forces be preparing?? We have three hours left to see.
Crimson sky will surely happen in the next episodes. Toranaga has still one option. The element of surprise by john blackthorne. Toranaga may have said that he gave up crimson sky, but in secret he is planning something in the background.
Izu is Yabushiges land, and Toronaga's always been mentioned as "lord of Kanto". Also in the will that Toronaga had written in this episode shows that he is allocating his land to his grandchildren when they come of age which likely means his land was not part of whatever was offered to Saeki.
Izu is a fief that is currently m bestowed upon Yabushige who has sworn his allegiance to toranaga. Toranaga can bestow this fief as he pleases to anybody which is why his half brother asked for it during the dinner (although ishido has aldready offered it to him) in return for supporting toranaga
CinePals, We all know that Lord Toronaga only moves when he has to. The death of his son has brought him more time before setting out for Ishido. Then he might decide to only go very slowly and drag the march out longer. He also now knows that his brothers castle and lands are not protected like they should be and are open to "Bandit" attacks. Do we really beleave that Toranaga did'nt know a big army was approaching? Cheers, Chris Perry.
Toranaga has totally off-screen given Anjin permission to take control of the Rasmus (his ship) after his brother's betrayal to prepare a surprise attack after his 'surrender'.
@@JynxedKoma how do you know that? From what I have gathered from the show, it seems like a very patriarchal society, and sons were very much valued. That doesn't seem to be consistent with your comment. Although, I admit that I'm not a expert on Feudal Japan, but your claim that a noble Japanese lord would value someone they just met over their son seems unlikely.
Toranaga wants to be Shogun but he has lived in the era of warring Daimyos, the era of Nobunaga crushing everyone and creating festering resentments, the Taiko's takeover and endless attempts to take over Korea and hopefully China. He doesn't want to return to the chaos of all against all, or the fear of everyone the last two overlords went through. I don't see him as afraid of war but he doesn't want wars that resolve nothing rather only create fodder for future conflict. That's his sensitivity to Blackthorne's requests. He knows Blackthorne wants to go after the Portuguese but while he too wants the Portuguese influence curtailed in Japan, Toranaga doesn't want it at the cost of war or conflict with Portugal and Spain. Blackthorne doesn't get that part of Toranaga's attitude toward the Portuguese. I don't think knowing about that first battle and its conclusion would have changed the son's actions. He was obsessed with living up to his father who he thought was god's own Samurai/Daimyo. If he learned the truth it most likely would have been spun in his head that killing the uncle would let him stand equal with dad. The kid would have been in even deeper crap had he done it since he would have murdered one of the regents. Toranaga would have had to slap him silly and tell the kid to put his own head in the box. I suspect everyone has forgotten the deal making Toranaga did on the black ship with the priests. Why would those Christian regents vote Toranaga's brother to the regency? Does that make sense given how much they hated him? Even if Toranaga is killed, the brother takes over those lands and vassals and the regents would have a new Minowara threat on their hands who is even more rich and armed.
I loved the two moments (which were not included in this reaction video) ''Kashigi Yabu'' (my favorite character, performed by the great Tadanobu Asano), when he's showing up at the hot spring, and when ''Toranaga'' surrenders, he was one of the few men that stood up to disagree by his decision (of course I know his reasons, but still).....Greetings from The Netherlands.
I screamed at the tv as well jaby! "Kill him! are you gonna kill him or not? WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOOOORRRR?????? Ugghhh What was he waiting for? 🤦♀️just like Achara said "silly boy " Im assuming a stick of time relates to a stick of incense. The madam was stating at it burn when she started talking to toranaga and looked at it again when it was damn near burnt out.
Toronaga has been playing 4D chess while everyone else has been playing checkers, there is no way he didn't see this coming, trust the plan, Crimson Sky wouldn't have worked, even without the eart, only way to win is from the inside
For the record, I think I read somewhere that the difference between harakiri and seppuku is harakiri you alone, you slit your stomach and die slower, and seppuku is more ritualistic as well as having a "second" there to end the pain by cutting off the head. In other words harakiri is more like suicide as we know it and seppuku is an honor bestowed rather than an order given. If that makes sense.
is the plan that his half brother will escort his supposedly surrendered army into Osaka then as a united force Suprise assault the castle from within and eliminate the council ? crimson sky being a Suprise decapitation assault plan all along
Toranaga has some sort of plan up his sleeve. It’s not like him to be caught by surprise by his brother’s betrayal. As the madam observed he could have seen his brother’s army move to cut him off with only one spy. And Toranaga even had a spy planted at this formerly unimportant fishing village. Wouldn’t he Also have a spy to tell him what his brother was up to? I think he’s acting like he’s defeated to lull his enemies into thinking they’ve won. Maybe he’s made asecret alliance with the Christian regents (the priest was saying they should make Toranaga an ally. Obviously he hasn’t told his vassals (or his son) about whatever plan he has but I’m sure he has a plan.
The only thing i don't like in this adaptation is the fact blackthorne doesnt speak any japanese at all at this point in time, where by the books he would be able to have simple conversations already. but i think it works well in a way
Can't figure out if the guy playing Toranaga's son is a bad actor or a genius level actor. There's a level of sophistication in acting that everyone, even background characters, seem to have. The way Toranaga's son speaks to his dad, holds his sword, delivers his lines seems very amateurish, but I'd also believe a greenhorn buffoon character like him would behave and speak that way lool
hes a great actor IMO. played that overeager heart on his sleeve character so well. especially in the shots where it pans to his face when his father was being mocked like in the final scene at sunset where Saeki took toranaga's answer to surrender. you could see the rage loading
Not 100% faulting the son for his actions. The guy was raised knowing his father was the best and had the highest expectations for himself but overestimated himself too much and died the worst way possible, killed himself while opposing his father's decisions.
Honestly, the way his son died...totally on brand 🤦🏽♀️ he was not capable of a solid thought process or any strategy. He grew up very protected so he lacked the skills his father adapted by being taken as a child prisoner for most of his childhood.
Ye i really like your insight about the beheading. I did not think of that. Impressed. Are you Gin? ) The series is almost dreamlike. The OA is the only thing that gave this sureal feel but still feels genuine true, the text(double) translations makes the show. Obsessed.

There was one thing that stuck with me in my Asian Civ course regarding Seppuku and being the second. I was reminded of it here and I apologize for the detail but the thing that stuck out was how specific it had to be when you perform the beheading. Ideally to be a good second you wouldn't behead the person committing seppuku completely, it would leave just enough attached in front for the head to fall forward and stay attached. It would be held against the second if they made mistakes during this process, so as a result not many people would actually be willing to be a second back then.
Choppin a head off in one swing is almost impossible. A lot of conditions has to met to make that possible, it is possible but is rare. Altough it can take less than three swings.

It’s funny that during the series Toranaga has promised to build a church and a Red light district in Edo. I hope he builds them right next to each other

With the zoning laws in Japan? Absolutely 🤣

Nagakado's end was very embarrassing but at the same time, it's his fault for being impulsive once again
I dont blame him. He is a young kid who has had to see his great pops be disrespected every day by the council and its stooges. people mocking his father, their family name, it was a matter of time before he lets loose. any man with self worth would defend their family the same. you're probably a blue haired starbucks addicted manchild who has no idea what self worth and family mean.

1:55 Achara Kirk's keep observation of 12-year old Toranaga's lack of head chopping strength shows why she is not only much more observant and intelligent than the rest of us, but divulge her previous masked job as an executioner.
😂
Achara is right about beheading being an inconsistent method of execution. It was so inconsistent that the entire purpose for inventing the guillotine (also known as "the national razor") was that it was guaranteed to be instantly fatal, and could do so many times in a day without the fatigue of a headsman.
Anyone else notice Toranaga looked straight at John when he said Crimson Sky was a mistake? John knows the phrase "Crimson Sky". I think the rant by John was part of the plan. "Crimson Sky" was his "go" phrase.....

Taking the head was how a samurai proved their victory.
Heads were presented to the Daimyo after the battle in a ceremony.
Protect Fuji! They can kill all the other characters but dont kill Fuji-sama!🤣
This is the best show on tv at the moment. It is so good.
I love how civilized the Japanese were, yet at the same time, so barbaric. It is a very interesting blend.
Hawthorne is the most civilized yet he is labelled the barbarian 😂😂
That how they survive and thrive in a nation where death in air waiting to get them in moment unnoticed.
It's interesting because just as in the West, civility and barbarism both occur, we just choose what we acknowledge and accept depending on our different cultures. I mean Protestants and Catholics were also torturing and burning each other alive at this time and murdering locals in droves in the places they colonized.

He received a handwritten letter of appreciation from Nobunaga and became Nobunaga's favorite.

Even if the enemy soldiers surrendered, he killed them all.

He deeply loved Tama (Garasha), her legal wife, and did not divorce her even after her father, Mitsuhide Akechi, caused the Honnoji Incident, and imprisoned her in order to avoid her death penalty. However, Tadaoki frequently visited this area, and Garasha gave birth to a child.
In order to free himself from Garasha's captivity, he rampages through the battlefield like a demon.

He became Tokugawa Ieyasu's 250 koku hatamoto and spent his entire life in Japan.
From the above, Hosokawa Garasha and Miura Anjin are not acquainted.
If the two had met like in a drama
Miura Anjin would have been beheaded by Hosokawa Tadaoki.
When John at the end meeting stood up and basically insulted everyone then just walked out convinced me Toranaga has a plan to all this. Perhaps being escorted into Osaka with no need to breach the walls
Guys, I have a theory:
If you go back to episode 6, near the end, when Mariko goes back to Toranaga’s tent to report on how Blackthorne’s night at the Tea House went, at the beginning of that scene, you’ll see Toranaga folding up a paper and throwing it into the fire in front of him.
They focus in on him, which I think is subtly telling us “remember the role of Toranaga’s spies in relation to who you are seeing on screen.”
If this is all true, this would make Shogun one of the smartest shows on television because they really plant seeds and expect their audience to be smart enough to connect the dots because nothing is “filler” or used to kill time on each episode.
What do you guys think?? Let me know.
The thing I really can’t get over once I heard it in another video is the subtle power of translation and it’s role in the storytelling
For example Mariko is given both power and burden in her translations, so often she’s tweaking people’s words on the fly to almost imbue ever so slightly different meaning or changing things slightly to be more palatable either for the social standing, the situation or to diffuse potential confrontation.
Makes Mariko the true *SHOGUN* in my book as she is able to walk both worlds effortlessly.
She holds the power.

That ending was genuinely shocking
Tranaga had a stone on the torii gate.If you don't fall, you'll be lucky. It's an old Japanese wish.
Yes.
Yep...had to play out all the ceremony for any spies roaming around.
His son death would be a positive, makes it all believable. Strangely enough he did help his father😂

I did (miss it), but now it seems obvious. Thanks for pointing it out !
Toronaga has at least one more son in this series that we know of. He’s married to the sister of Ochiba who was giving birth at the start of the show. His consort is also pregnant.
well that's a relief
One thought-- by giving in, Toranaga has bought time. An immediate refusal would have meant instant battle with his brother's forces. And don't think that the army Toranaga has with him is the sum total of his followers. What might the other other forces be preparing?? We have three hours left to see.
Remember Anjin asked about Ishidos ship. He also wants to use his ship and cannons. Maybe that's the plan?
Crimson sky will surely happen in the next episodes. Toranaga has still one option. The element of surprise by john blackthorne. Toranaga may have said that he gave up crimson sky, but in secret he is planning something in the background.
Next Episode is titled 'The Abyss of Life'. Episode 9 is titled 'Crimson Sky'. We'll get to the bloodbath soon enough :D
its easier to do crimson sky when theyre already inside osaka, i think thats toranagas plan.
Toranaga's brother would probably be gifted all Toranaga's lands and holdings for bringing him in.
He specifically mentioned being lord of Izu.
Izu is Yabushiges land, and Toronaga's always been mentioned as "lord of Kanto". Also in the will that Toronaga had written in this episode shows that he is allocating his land to his grandchildren when they come of age which likely means his land was not part of whatever was offered to Saeki.
@@ach3909my understanding is that Izu is a fief within Kanto, which is why Yabushige is a vassal to Toranaga.
@@mythosaur8672 It kind of felt like he said it as a way of teasing what he was about to reveal.
Knowing Toranaga, I think he would be sadder if Omi or Anjin died than his son died.
Toranaga has totally off-screen given Anjin permission to take control of the Rasmus (his ship) after his brother's betrayal to prepare a surprise attack after his 'surrender'.
No.
Being nore sad about a random guys death than ur own son is wild
@@badboymanry It was very common in Feudal Japan for that to be the case.
@@JynxedKoma how do you know that? From what I have gathered from the show, it seems like a very patriarchal society, and sons were very much valued. That doesn't seem to be consistent with your comment. Although, I admit that I'm not a expert on Feudal Japan, but your claim that a noble Japanese lord would value someone they just met over their son seems unlikely.
ending of the episode mind blown way 👀
Toranaga wants to be Shogun but he has lived in the era of warring Daimyos, the era of Nobunaga crushing everyone and creating festering resentments, the Taiko's takeover and endless attempts to take over Korea and hopefully China.

Absolutely, Toranaga has a spy network and there's no way he didn't foresee that. He definitely has a plan.
the old trojan horse play 😄 an oldie but a goodie
So interesting where they took this vs what actually happens in the book.
Hulu shows a couple of "upcoming" episodes on the list. There are ten episodes.
This show is so good, I really can't get enough of it. Only bad part of the show is having to wait a whole week for the next episode
That ending... Crimson Sky it is, *AGAIN.*
Crimson Sky became Crimson Bath😅😅😅
A stick of time is the burning of one stick of incense. Stick burns down, time's up.
Talk about getting screwed at the Tea House.....
is the plan that his half brother will escort his supposedly surrendered army into Osaka then as a united force Suprise assault the castle from within and eliminate the council ? crimson sky being a Suprise decapitation assault plan all along
"Where is the beauty in this?"
The only thing i don't like in this adaptation is the fact blackthorne doesnt speak any japanese at all at this point in time, where by the books he would be able to have simple conversations already. but i think it works well in a way
20:57 this was just hilarious~!

This is just Toranaga and his half brother plan..They acting so well even his son and vassals don't see through it
Oh my god I didn’t even think about that till now
But if that’s true the sons death is even more pointless now
as someone who uses spies himself, toranaga knows that the only way to make this look authentic is to keep the plan on a need to know basis. unfortunately for his son.
Toranaga’s brother can now ally with him as he can expect more than a regency. He is now heir to the shogun.
Back then, they wouldn't completely cut the head off. They would try to leave a little piece of skin still attached.
