    The US Air Force has been carrying out three days of intensive flying from RAF Lakenheath. The 'surge' saw the base's F-15 aircraft flying many training sorties, designed to test whether or not they are combat-ready.

    I first saw the F-15 fly when I was stationed in Thailand in 1973 ... who'd of thunk, it would still be flying (and performing well) in 2020. Makes me happy and proud to see this beautiful aircraft still flying.

      I saw one of the newest USAF aircraft I ever saw in 1983 during Moody AFB's Open House. An Eagle with
      15!! hours on the airframe from First Fighter Group based at Langley. The youngest F4 we had on base was
      about 3200 hours :).

      + Interesting mucker, F-15 didn't enter USAF service until 1976, first fight of the F-15A July 72, the F-15B 73, but not in Thailand, unless you know something I don't.
      I saw them mix it with Sea Harrier FRS1 just before the Falklands War, the FRS1 getting the better of them some of the time, which surprised the Yanks.

      This was one of the first production model and it was on a tour of US bases in the Pacific and Asia, letting the troops see the new fighter.

    As a civilian for DOD I worked at RAF Lakenheath for a year and a half in the mid 80's. They flew F-111s then. The locals didn't like those loud things no matter what time they flew!

      I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall from 88 to 91. And yes the F 111's were loud

    I'm glad we have 75 US aircraft in the UK. Our air force isn't that big, so 75 aircraft is a considerable increase in presence. Always good to see us working with allies such as the US.

    I wondered what was up. We had a pretty good air show for 3 days over our home, mostly F15s but we had one sighting of some RAF Typhoons. Our only complaint- With low cloud, we can hear them but can't see them. I'm tempted to write to RAF Lakenheath and ask them to fly lower!

      Do it! The noise would be much better than all the cars farting on gearshifts, which at this stage is basically mandatory background noise.

      @@juniorballs6025 I know what you mean. We live about 0.5km from a bypass and when the wind is from the West, there is constant traffic noise (plus sirens!)

      America don't contribute anything to British airspace, they are just there as a forward base for NATO. Protection of British airspace is done by the RAF.

      They need a B1b lancer to take off on full reheat that will definitely shake your rib cage ,haven't seen a b1b display since 2007 and I've been going fairford for 20 yrs ,RAF Mildenhall should do a Airshow like the old days now it's staying open.👍

    Brings back memories, Operation Readiness Exercises followed by an ORI. I liked the surges myself, but then I just

      No it doesn't mate they have two bases which are the UK's but we let them use them. If they started getting to big headed they would be booted out. Mate we have alot of camps still active

    I understand why the US air force is based in the UK with the threat from the east. They do appreciate being in the UK I know that. We have a couple of units out in the states but not as big as there presents.

      That was a combat uniform, not a parade ground uniform. Our USAF dress uniforms are sharp.

      Basically flying at an unsustainable sortie rate. Your not keeping up with maintenance but putting more jets in the air for a key time.

    Some of the comments on here are laughable. The RAF just doesn’t have the same capability as the USAF. We act like a big player but the reality is we couldn’t act without American support. Our Armed Forces have been in perpetual decline for decades. We haven’t been a major military force for ages.

      No one has the same capability as the USAF but they aren't the competition. We can can act alone in a lot of situations and compared to the vast majority of countries we at still a big player.

      David Houseman we can only act in a limited role. Our Armed Forces openly admit that we need American support. The RN is a pathetic size and RM capability will be scaled down due to the cost of those new carriers. The Army will lose more people and we can’t recruit enough as it is. People are deluded if they think we could handle any serious threat in an actual war fighting role.

      @@ghostwriter2031 every country except the US can can only act in a limited manner. We can handle basically any threat to the UK, because no one (except the US) can project an large force across distance at sea.
