Taren - this is a great video. This is the 'old school Taren' video. NO commercial aspect and just down to earth Tri advice and inspiration to get new athletes (like me) in to the sport. Perfect timing for me as I am aimless right now on a training plan, can't swim and goal is a half IM.
Great video... nice to see and thank you.
Pro tip : you can watch movies on Flixzone. Been using it for watching a lot of movies lately.
@Matthias Nickolas Yea, I have been using Flixzone for months myself :D
@Matthias Nickolas yea, been watching on Flixzone for since december myself :D
Heading to ironman Puerto Rico again! 2020!! Wish me luck!
Thank you so much Taren! I am doing Galveston 70.3 April 5th. I am confident in every aspect except swimming and have been kinda worrying. You're my hero, keep it up!
im curious if you were ever did this event given it happened right at the beginning of covid
@@ck1psc44 I unfortunately did not... it was quite disappointing putting the amount of hours and effort to prepare only to get shut down literally 2 weeks prior to it happening
@@jacobcoleman638 oh man that stinks. hopefully you were able to do a different one after all that training
Wow TT... I decided to do a 70.3 yesterday in May.. talk about dropping on your lap!! Thanks for making this!!!
Trained 7 months starting from a Strava fitness score of zero doing about 37min exercise daily (according to Strava stats for 2021). And I finished half Ironman just over 8 hour. It came down to 2 swim, 2 jogs and 1 bike per week on average. My first ever event in general.
what is your Strava fitness score right now?
Quality of your advice is steadily improving, well done!
You should do a video on small upgrades after getting basic kit. Stuff like a magnetic race belt, compression sleeves and socks, speed laces, cheap aero helmet, speed and cadence sensor, basic bike computer, etc.
Interesting to see dedicated swims for technique and recovery instead of just 3 "regular" swims, will definitely implement that into my training!
'endurance is easy to build' he says after just finishing a 4 hr indoor bike. Easy for him to say. But honestly it's true. Much easier than trying to go fast. Personally, I'm waiting for the 'just signed up for triathlon this weekend and haven't swam in several months' video.
I'm not a triathlete but I do sometimes swim with one. He told me that in his first triathlon he was overtaken by a lady riding a bike with a wicker basket on the front and child carry seat on the back. So you really can compete on any bike!!!
Thanks for giving so much to the sport and being so inclusive regardless background or experience. Your earned your spot Taren!
Another fantastic video Taren! Thank you.
Like the advice. I would recommend a road bike (any road bike that fits) for the 56 miles of a 70.3 bike. A MTB or Fat Bike would be a bit rough. A hybrid might work in a pinch.
Great advice for the new folks. I’m in year 6 and would have said the same. Beat to you in 20!
Nice one. No commercials this time -> a big thumbs up :)
This video is for me. I could easily done the bike+swim in good time for my age... That swim... Intimidates me to stay at a sprint distance or nothing.
One thing that non-swimmers need to focus on to improve body position is ankle flexibility. (Dorsiflexion and plantar flexion) This allows the ankle to snap at the end of the kicking motion. You can kick as hard as you want but if you don’t have that snap at the end of the kick, you are wasting energy and just pulling your legs through the water. Most runners and non-swimmers have rigid ankles. Rigid ankles contribute to ineffective/non-propulsive kick.

Aahhh yesss. 🙏 thank you!
amazing video my man. very very very helpful. IRONMAN70.3 in Greece, already registered
Go get it!
I agree with TT, on the bike, I have done 3 half-IM(4:55h-5:15h ish) on (self assembled) bike costing 700GBP which is about 750 EURs. 9 workouts a week woow that is a overkill. Do not be terrified, I have trained so little I do not know how I have managed cycled less then 1000km run around 400 and swam perhaps 30 km total each year more or less in .5year prep. I did ZONE 4 training only thou. Did that perhaps on under-training, but I was able to hit some personal bests 10k 5k and half-marathon. Also during the race no clip on shoes or clip-less what just running shoes on the bike. Trained in IKEA slippers on my home trainer, SUCH FUN. Keep it up.
Hey beginners, don't worry too much about swimming! It's less than 20% of the overall effort in a 70.3 . Swimming 3 times a week is IMHO NOT necessary, training-time is better invested in running or biking.
I agree on the numbers, but you also dont want to attempt a 70.3 without being able to swim at least 1200 yards without stopping..
How do you know if you are a weak swimmer? Is there a time cutoff ?
Quick question... Training for my first tri and I'm swimming on average 2:00/100m (when I do 400m, 800m, 1000m, etc) and my heart rate is in zone 2 on average (130-140bpm). Should I be swimming in a higher heart rate zone? Or should I just be working on my technique to become faster and more efficient when swimming? Thx T!
How can your main run not be on Sunday, there is no way to get in a long run of 25km plus on Wednesday. Also, my swimming has to be Tuesday and Thursday evenings, my long bike has to be Saturday. Is there room in your plan to swap workouts around? It would be great to see a program that is built around one’s work hours, i.e. 9-5; 7-3, etc...
Dude, that's a super cool shirt, I love it. What brand is it?
With biking...it is really hard to get a proper estimate on distance since the Watts we put into the pedals isn't incredibly accurate vs the speed many of the tools tell us. Is there a better way to estimate indoor bike time to get the 120km?
Where are these spreadsheets? i just signed up and having a difficult time navigating these resources you say are available to team trainiac athletes?
Will this be part of a series for beginner 70.3 triathletes who are weak on biking and then running? I feel like my weakness changes depending on what today's workout is.
the corollary to this is why suck at one sport when i can suck at three... it's me. i need this series!
Taren, what's the green shirt you're wearing?
What about for weak runners like myself?
i'd argue that those per workouts would be hours per week in the leadup to the race and the old indian proverb is "its not the distance, but effort that kills you" :D
that's me!
