That is SO cool! I can't think of a more perfect way to display your cel, especially with the story behind it. Funny enough, my husband and I were watching the OG TMNJ movie earlier tonight. Your build brings back so many memories -- like fighting with the rabbit ears to make sure they're just right to get a good picture, that sound when you turn the little power dial on/off, always accompanied by a feeling of static electricity (which always zapped you if your were dumb enough to touch the screen), and even the gray screen when it was turned off. Never thought I'd be nostalgic for these things! 🍕📺
It's weird the things we remember as we get older. Things that seemed so mundane at the time now send us down memory lane. I'm sure this build won't hit mass appeal, but I really needed it. It just made me feel good as I was building it. And I smile every time I look at it
Epic! Cowabunga! Love all the little touches. The aluminum foil on the antenna really took me back. And the pizza slice was priceless. Thank you for sharing with us!
I remember having the original VHS movie you got from Burger King... Had all the TMNT cereal bowls as well... Us old timers had it good when we were kids lol
We had some pretty epic TMNT action figures, and I can definitely remember rocking some Hammer pants with them on it. I'm sure some of those original things are worth a pretty penny now.
Gargoyles was a pretty awesome one. We had a bunch of off the wall crazy ones, too. Snorks, Street Sharks, Captain Planet, Muppet Babies, Surfside, and Ren and Stimpy were all in the rotation. It was a good time to grow up
I’ve contemplated making a vintage tv for ages, so it’s nice to see you actually make one. You’ve done a great job with this. The only way you could improve this would be adding a light behind the cel 🤔
I thought about that, but that is solid on the back side, so it wouldn't shine through. And I was nervous about putting a light source next to the celluloid, I didn't want it to warp the film or make it brittle over time
@@MuchProps I completely understand. I love the addition of the pizza. I’ve made foam food props before and it always amazes me how realistic they can look after a good paint job 😁
An awesome addition would be a sound bite collection hooked to a push-button on the volume knob. Have it play the theme song and/or various lines from the series. For good concentric round parts, run a #8 machine screw through the center and lock it into a drill. This lets you turn it at an even pace while sanding for a good finished shape. Also, try a hole saw kit for making initial parts, They run from 3/4" out to 5", and larger are available. This is useful for making numerous circles.
I left that side hollow so a speaker or something could be added later if I wanted to do some upgrades to it. I would have to do a little research to pull it off. My electronics skills are not the best.
@@MuchProps I would love to do either the Simpsons tv or thus one you just did, replace the animation cell with a cheap tablet, load it old episode of the Simpsons/TMNT and let it play as a display piece. Have the power cable run out the back so it's all hidden
I wonder if you could add LED strips behind the cell to brighten it up like the TV is on. You could also use transparency sheets for your printer and make your own layered images for the TV if you don’t have a cell
The transparency is just the Donatello. The background is printed, and it's backed with cardboard, so shining a light behind it would not light it up. Yes you could make your own, that would be fun. You may also be surprised at how cheap you can pick up some of these old cartoon cels.
*old man voice* When I was growing up we had to run as fast as we could the three miles from the bus stop to make it home just in time to turn on the tv and see our favorite cartoon. If we missed an episode we couldn't just call it back up and watch it. We had to wait weeks or months for it to be run again. Oh how I miss this days when a storm would make your TV all fuzzy and you had to run outside to turn the aerial antenna just right as your brother yelled MORE or STOP when the reception was perfect. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN
LOL. Those were the days. Having all those limitations just made you appreciate it even more. Try explaining the excitement of waking up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons to a kid today. Or even just the sound the TV made when you turned it on and off.
Cool boobtube Thomas... But those TV's had crts in which the screen bulged out to give better viewing for everyone(I think). I remember when a 25 inch console TV was a big screen... And many times the big console sets not only had TV's but also a radio and record player in it as well. Those were usually about 4 1/2 ft long and resembled actual furniture... My shows after school were Batman and Robin, Gilligan's island, and when I could get the uhf to tune in properly to channel 52, I would watch Ultraman...
We had a small TV in our room growing up that had the knobs like what I built. I don't remember who it was, but I vaguely remember someone I knew had an old TV with the remote that was connected by a wire. Don't get me wrong, I love my smart flat screen TVs, but they just don't have the style like they used to.
It is merch from a RUclipsr I watch named Ten Hundred. He has a shirt of the month club that I am subscribed to, but you can also buy one-offs on his website

Yeah great memories. I remember my dad saying he had kids to change the channels.
LOL. I think that was a old addage said by every dad. Mine also said that about cleaning, cooking, and mowing the lawn.

Love this build. Cartoon for me had to be Biker Mice from Mars. Loved that show. To show my age, i remember when UK terrestrial tv got a 5th channel!
OH Bikers from Mars. We had so many epic cartoons back in the day.
Amazing display piece. They do make acrylic that will protect from UV and will keep your art from fading in light.
Thanks for the pointer. That would be an easy thing to swap out later.

I'm glad you liked it. I may get some retro stickers to add to it, too. It was down to the wire finishing this one

really great little tv.
Thanks 😁👊
I have a few favorites cartoons from my childhood but 2 of my absolute favs are ExoSquad and Gargoyles

Looks great! I would switch the scotch tape for an acid free tape, though.
thanks for the advice

Good stuff bro.
Appreciate it
Great work on this, would love to see a Simpsons TV too!
Thanks. The cool thing about a Simpsons version would be making it look like their TV. I may need to be on the lookout for old cartoon cels
