Looking at the old pictures it’s amazing to me what a busy and important city it once was. Now it feels like a place that’s been forgotten.
Right!? Some of the old photos are unbelievable!
Another great perspective on the "Wall Street of the Southwest!" We always enjoy our forays to the island and seeing all the history there! This just gives us more to enjoy!
Haha yes!! There are old vaults everywhere!
I visited this area in 1978. Nice area.
I wish I could have seen what it was like in 78!
Great video, J.R.! I wonder how you were able to arrange the tour with Lisa Shaw at the Arts Center 😆? It is interesting to note the change in influence and industry you saw between Galveston and Houston as you went from the 19th to 20th century. In Galveston, they demolished their 1870s Cotton Exchange Building to build a smaller one in 1940, whereas in Houston, they moved from a 4-story 1884 building (still standing) to a 16-story high rise in 1924 (also still standing).
Woah!! Yes! Lisa is the best 😂😂
❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!!
I challenge you to find a single document dated before the 1970s that refers to The Strand as "The Wall Street of the Southwest"
Let me know when you’re available for coffee. I’ve got a few documents.
