But is paper a "natural" predator? Sure, it's mostly made of wood pulp or other plant-based natural fiber, but as far as I know, paper doesn't exist in nature, so there's an argument to be made that it's a genetically engineered predator akin to all the specialized breeds of hunting dog made for game that wolves would be ill suited to prey on.

It inspired me to do just that-one man named Gary Dahl apparently thought it up and became a millionaire off it. Reportedly, he had the idea in a bar while listening to his friends complain about their pets, and allegedly, he made enough to set up his own bar. According to the Museum of Play (which is a random website I discovered down this rabbit hole, and commented about already, haha), he bought the original Pet Rocks from his local building store, which sourced them from San Rosarita Beach in Mexico. So you could actually still get an "original" Pet Rock (kind of-it's a beach, I imagine the tide moves things around a bit, but it's at least the same ecosystem).

I thought they were all, the kind with wobbly eyes. I guess those must be a subspecies. I'm glad we don't have to worry much about the rocks uprising, that happens so rarely and slowly, that most of us will be safe. But much like the avian dinosaurs, rocks are mostly known from the sounds they make. From the Ringing Rocks of Montana, to the Singing Sand of Bete Grise. But of course, the sound most of us recognize most is when they get together into rock groups, and preform their Rock and Roll concerts. 😉

What you need to do, to keep your pet rock content and purring, is also adopt a Great Canadian House Hippo. The House Hippo instinctually will seek out bits of drier lint and old socks, so the House Hippo and rock can have a nice cozy nest behind the stove, or under the dishwasher (either is an acceptable habitat).

Something to note as well, some rocks seem to need a lot of solitary time while others seem to constantly seek out the company of other rocks. It's helpful to supervise your rocks and if you happen to have more a more social one and a more solitary one it is important to make sure the social one will agree to leave the solitary one alone at times. Easy ways to do this are including the more social one in your daily tasks or spending time with it, like having it sit on your lap as you watch youtube or teaching it tricks like sit, play dead, or roll over. They typically need a little help with the last one. And providing the solitary one with more hiding spots such as a cave formation or a pile of leaves, twigs, and moss.
