  • This animated video shows our vision of a future in which the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - three times the size of France and containing up to 100,000,000 kilograms of plastic waste - is consigned to the history books. Subscribe to our channel to stay updated: bit.ly/371k8sN.
    After successfully achieving Proof of Technology in 2021 with System 002, we are now transitioning to System 03, our first full-scale ocean cleanup system and the blueprint for our future fleet.
    Our projections show that deploying ten systems based on System 03 will allow us to clean up the entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch for good - bringing us closer to completing our mission of ridding the oceans of plastic.

      I wish that were even close to true. This will clean up floating garbage only, a lot of what we throw into the ocean sinks, including most plastics and many pieces of junk that are part plastic and part metal. I saw one video from a Japanese exploration submersible that went to the bottom of the Marianas trench. One of the first things I noticed on the seabed in the path of their spotlight was a plastic bag. One of James Cameron's videos taken in the same trench showed another plastic bag. By 2030 79% of all the plastic ever made will be in the sea, and this effort, valuable though it is, won't reduce that by more than 10% Now 10% is a valuable contribution and I support the effort but far more research and effort is needed to cure the problem, and one thing we need to do is to simply ban the use of plastic in many areas where it is currently used. I mean completely ban it, without exceptions. Plastic packaging for household goods like fridges and washing machines should be banned, cardboard should be used. Plastic bags for food should also be banned; go back to using paper and where ordinary paper won't do use waxed paper. Milk is sold in plastic or plastic lined cardboard cartons, there should be a return to waxed cardboard instead. We need to do these things as well as continue this wonderful effort by The Ocean Cleanup or the results will still be a disaster for mankind.
      Picking up the garbage on the surface is a great start but it will do only a fraction of what is required.

    In 1990 I sailed from Hawaii to Vancouver. We hit the Center of the pacific high and the water was beautiful and calm. Then styrofoam became evident then plastic and all kinds of garbage. Mostly dumped by cruise ships and transport vessels. From a person who never put any garbage in a body of water I was deeply mortified! I wrote a letter to the Vancouver Sun, which of course was never printed. We powered through this garbage patch for almost a day and a half, doing about six knots of speed, this patch was over two hundred miles across.
    I am so grateful to see ‘The Ocean Cleanup’ doing this important task!
    Thank you from the bottom of my ❤️
    On the up side I saw a small pod of bulga whales during the calm and they came to investigate us, one swan right to the stern of the boat, we turned off our motor, due to no wind, and that beautiful being gently bumped the stem to say hi and swam off. It was something I will never forget.
    Thank you
    Love to all ❤️

    FYI...Plastic bottles were introduced to the world in 1973 so we’ve been chucking them into the trash and oceans for approximately 50 years. This cleanup will become a permanent part of our lives. But it will get better and this group is the reason why. They are working with other companies and worldwide organizations to attack cleaning up the earth and have many options available to them to do it. This means you and I and everyone who wants to contribute to this effort will have an opportunity to help them clean up this problem. I admire this man and I applaud others who seek to duplicate his work. Have a great day!

      _"the government that just thinks throwing more money at a problem will fix it."_
      Please pay better attention to politics. That's just a capitalist talking point to get you to believe that funding an ocean cleanup is untenable.
      And yet these wonderful people are proving those capitalists 100% wrong, and showing that the capitalist propaganda has never been anything more than blatant lies.
      The *last* thing capitalists want to do, and certainly never did, was throw money at it. That whole idea is ludicrous at best. All a capitalist cares about is the bottom line, and that is an indisputable truth.

    • @BikingWIthPanda
      @BikingWIthPanda Год назад +1

      in some cases, throwing money at the problem is exactly what is needed. when communities are impoverished to the point that basic life needs are a daily struggle, they often can't allocate energy to solving harder problems like trash management, climate change contributing quite a bit with extra flooding that moves garbage by the ton downstream to the seas. but when they gain a bit of financial independence we see developing areas start to tackle this problem, as we are all honestly happier with a well cared for environment

    Just the start. I lived and worked in Africa, Brazil, S.E. Asia and China. When you see open storm drains and major rivers choked with garbage all heading for the sea you know that re-cycling you coffee cup in the UK is a losing battle. Many of these countries also have huge barges that carry garbage out to sea, weigh it down and hope it sinks to the bottom. Until all that is stopped - it will never end.

    • @ChrisDraussen
      @ChrisDraussen Год назад +2

      So true, that's what I am thinking. The problem ist, someone found a way to make money out of it. As garbage is like gold If Ii can handle it. Also to stop garbage in the oceans you need to stop corruption in how many countries? Not just collecting it. 25 tons a turn with a lot of fuel... how does it make a difference for all of us? We all already eat fish with microplastic inside. The First Thing would be the companies who are selling their things in plastic, all over the world, especially in Asia. Look how they dispose their garbage... Throwing in creeks and rivers all around, bcs burning is forbidden and highly toxic. And the local authorities are full of corrupted people. So how can a small company make a difference. Please someone tell me. Please.

    • @alanduncan9204
      @alanduncan9204 Год назад +1

      @@ChrisDraussen I also worked in Algeria. The pristine sand dunes of the Sahara are covered in plastic crap. It blows all over the place. Gets stuck on plants and fences and flaps for decades. The locals don't care - they firmly believe there is a place in heaven waiting for them and this world does not matter. Hence the issue in places like Indonesia. Jakarta's canals are a massive, toxic, clogged up mess so their answer is to tear down millions of acres of pristine rain forest to build a new capital - great move.

    • @ahsokaincognito

      That trash you saw in SEA is contributed by the UK, most wealthy countries ship their plastic to China (until they stopped accepting it a few years back), Indonesia and other East Asian countries. Your recycled cup goes a long way, especially if you replace it with a reusable one.

    I really hope this animation helps you guys see your goal through to the end - for it's merely just the beginning. Even if and when the Pacific Garbage Patch is finally cleaned up, there are other, lesser known garbage patches in the other oceans of the world. Then of course, there's the likely possibility of the garbage patches reforming if the source of the problem - plastic production and pollution - isn't remedied. And then, with all that considered, there's still the issue of microplastics in just about every conceivable layer of the ecosystem.
    I say this not with pessimism or rudeness. I merely say this determination and the hope that, once the Pacific Garbage Patch has been cleaned up, that people won't think that everything's suddenly fixed. This is but the first step in a long and lengthy, but absolutely necessary process if we don't want future generations to be swimming in garbage when they visit the beach or condemned to consider sea turtles and other marine life as only living in the past. We made this mess and we have a duty to only our planet, but to ourselves to fix it and see it through to the end.

    • @andrewjensen8189
      @andrewjensen8189 Год назад

      I couldn't have said it better myself, and I wouldn't call that being pessimistic, more realistic. Half of plastics in the world were manufactured within the last 15 years, think about that. Along with needing more organizations like this removing ocean plastics directly, we also need recycling to indirectly remove future ocean plastic.

    Thank you Boyan for never giving up on your dream. I've watched you since your first video and first talked about the problem with the trash in our oceans. Your making history and will forever be remembered as the man who stepped up to save our rivers and oceans, the life blood of our planet. Thank you for helping to make the feature brighter for all of us.

    I have heard alot of naysayers saying it is not possible to clean up all the ocean plastic with such "slow" methods, but these innovations are the beginning of the solution. Eventually systems will evolve and become efficient by orders of magnitude, and once that potential is unlocked the only thing needed is more funding.
    Good on you guys.

    So thankful for this amazing group! Won’t it be wonderful to one day know that the oceans are clean. Now, if people would just stop fishing (and eating fish), the world’s oceans might have some life left in it, when it’s clean.
