I have the same problem. I disconnected the rectifier and it started right up. After I reconnected the rectifier it worked. I have no idea how I fixed it.
That is unreal . A wiring diagram would be nice . I do not understand the gap either or why it would kill spark only in electric start mode. But it could be . Sometimes verifying what is working eliminates a lot of things . Will be interesting to see if gap is it . It runs well rope start and may or may not be worth fixing the electric start part , But for me figuring it out would be more satisfying than having the electric start it`s self .
Same here. I have to fix it just to solve the mystery. I'll put it back together and put it in the back of his truck for our trip next week, he can run hit travel trailer on it. I have my EU3000i Handi in the back seat of my truck to run my truck camper and charge my golf cart. This fall, I'll dive deeper into it and fix it.
We are pretty sure it's the coil and a coil gap issue. I did start taking it apart again after using it this summer for 2 weeks. Need to get back on the project one day. .
The idea is that the coil is too close to the flywheel. I have a guy on the Facebook group that insists this is the issue. I have started the teardown video and have not got back to it yet. A cold winter day in the near future will be a good day to work in my shed on this. Thanks for the kick in the butt! LOL Glenn
I'd say the ignition coil is getting very weak cause it looks like it has a ton of hours on it and if it's the original coil I'd say it's done it's duty and she deserves a new one and get the air gap set correctly, what I always done was used a business card between the coil and the magnet and usually that was the correct air gap they needed between the coil and flywheel but I almost guarantee that's what you're fighting is a weak coil. I'm a big honda guy worked on them all my life and guarantee that's the issue. I'm curious though what the compression is on it though sounds like it's weak to but shouldn't be keeping it from starting on the electric starter.
I think you are exactly right. I did start taking this gen apart but got sidetracked... When I get back to it, I think like you said, might as well replace the coil, set the gap and it should be good to go. Thanks Glenn
This is a magneto coil, it does not need a battery at all to run. We suspect the gap between the mag coil and the flywheel is too close or the coil is going bad. I started taking it apart and hope to finish it soon, the plan is to replace and re gap the coil...
I have started a video and have taken it apart partially... I am working on other projects these days. I hope to finish it this winter... I think the issue is a weak coil and or a tight gap between the coil and flywheel. When I get back to it, the plan is to replace the coil and set the gap and hope that fixes it. We used it in June to run the AC in my dad's RV and it worked great...Just wouldn't start with the starter motor and one time, we ran it out of gas and it had to cool off to restart with the pull start.
I never did get back to it. I started partially disassembled waiting for me to work on it. I am selling John Deere Lawn Tractors as fast as I can repair them this month. It may be next winter before I get back to it.

Did you figured it out? Am having the same issue…
Please share information on this generator project , I’m having the same problem . Thanks

Baffling
Has there been a follow up video to this? I replaced my battery and same thing, starts easily when I pull it but new battery doesn’t help…. Any ideas?

Check your battery first. But looks like the starter is pulling to many amps causing the spark coil not to spark

Did you ever figure out the problem with it not starting with key? Is there a follow up video?

Any update on the generator issues mine also has the same problem ,hoping to get a helping hand thanks
