    More Bruce Lee training! This post explores what I think was key to Bruce Lee's amazing athleticism: his core stability. The one finger push up (or two finger) and the dragon flag are nothing if not demonstrations of this impressive rigidity. This allowed Bruce to deliver incredible power and speed in his strikes, and may even have contributed to his mobility and high kicks!
    Whoever you are, you can stand to benefit from adding more core stability work to your own program.

    when bruce was doing those martial arts moves, he is at a relaxed state. Just because his body looks tensed doenst mean he's actually tensed. To do those martial arts moves you cannot be tensed, you have to be initially relaxed. That's why in his Jeet Kun do book he tells us that during the punch movement, the hand and arm throughout the entire punch are relaxed and ONLY tensed and hardened at the last second before contact.

    • @TheBioneer
      @TheBioneer  4 года назад +68

      Very true! But core stability doesn't mean being constantly rigid - it means having the option of rigidity. As you rightly point out, this comes into play especially at the point of contact.

    • @jamesbernards8409
      @jamesbernards8409 2 года назад +2

      *please imagine me speaking this with a nerdy lisp*
      Actually, to be technical, muscle tension is always constant, especially in resting position. Muscle tone, in terms of truth and not in terms of common understanding, is the rate of constant contractions while the muscle is in a rested position. Rigidity as Mr. Bioneer asserts, can be explained under this paradigm as a constant rate of high-to-maximal contraction rate, across all availably active muscle fibers.
      I'm not saying one is false and the other is correct, but there's a conceptual distinction to be made that if done so, brings much benefit to the student of either Bruce Lee or of the modern functional athlete.

    • @mrzack888
      @mrzack888 2 года назад +2

      @@jamesbernards8409 it's not about the muscles. It's about the fascia and tendons. True atleticism is knowing when and how to relax the body right before the action. You see this with quarter backs and basketball players. They make throwing/shooting the ball so easy and effortlessly. Has nothing to do with muscles.

    It seems the more I learn about strength and power, the more I appreciate The Farmer's Carry. Grip strength relates to how much weight one can hold/move. Core stability relates to how much strength, speed, and power one can generate in exercises, sports, hobbies, martial arts, etc. The Farmer's Carry seems to do it all. The best thing about it, is the fact it can be done with any random weight, regardless if one is at a gym or, like now, at home. I think The Turkish Getup would also be one of the best exercises for best overall exercises too. Thoughts anyone? Other exercises that would belong on this exclusive list?

    even arnold Schwarzenegger said that bruce lee's core was the basis of everything he did and it makes sense because without your core, you can't do anything. anything you do , your core is involved. walking, running, punching, picking a book up off the floor, carrying groceries, everything. i personally trained my core for years. thousands beyond thousands of reps for decades. even in bootcamp i highly trained my core and i remember one of the drill instructors say "you trying to get abs of steel?". this was in the 90's. now look at the fitness world? they all about the core. bruce lee was on target and he is the reason why i trained my core for all these years. because of a strong core , i was able to zercher lift an amount of weight that if i told you , i know for a fact that you will think i was full of it, but i did . i have used bruce lee's concepts a good portion of my life and i use them now on my journey in calisthenics. thank you sifu lee for your knowledge and unlocking one of the mysterious keys in search of "Real world power". Bruce Lee's shorter stature and shorter stomach makes it easier for him to do the one handed pushup. Taller people's (models, basketball players) will find it harder due to their elongated structure. People with longer legs will have a slightly different form when doing various exercises. For example a squat, taller people have to have a wider knee angle when going down. Why is it the Best gymnasts are majority not over 6 feet tall?? It's much easier doing those moves. Different body types are suited better for different sports.

    He had many keys. The core stability was the ring. Very nice explanation video. The "flag" is not easy yet he was still able to do it with a disc injury. Perhaps you can enlighten us on why he emphasized lat and forearm training and how those muscles relate to the core.

    Hi Adam, I’ve recently started gaining interest in physical training. I’m 13 years old and was wondering what workouts i should do and because you are my favorite RUclipsr, I was hoping you would give me some tips on exercise/ diet. Thanks.

      If you’re starting out then high volume callisthenics is a good place to begin. Then you can start throwing in more complex moves like tuck planche and one handed push ups. Combine with some kettlebells and heavy weights at that point and you’ll be on your way to pretty decent all round performance!

      @wowfrosted13 4 года назад

      You should be focusing on functional strength and calisthenics at your age. When you hit 17 or so, hit the gym for weights.

      @ Joseph Walsh : train bboying powermoves (airflares, flares, chairflares, flares to nineties, elbowairflares, one armed airflares) and tricks and combo (over 80 hand hops, pistons aka one armed handstand push ups, planche push ups most variations, hollow back push ups, chairfreeze to one armed handstand, one armed airbabyfreeze to one armed handstand balance, etc) and you at high level no calisthenic or fitness athlete will come ever close.
      You are 13 now, train now with the best powermovers you can find and you will be a killerpowemover at 23.

      Calisthenics is cool but we bboys with the gymnasts used to call it easy to normal mode warm ups before the real training.

    I am not too sure if you are aware of wing Chun concept of Xiu Nim Tao. It speaks about generating consistent power through relaxation and stabilization of the spin. I think what you shared and wing Chun xiu nim tao has a lot of similarity. It might be worth to look into. The master, who unfortunately passed away, was best at Xiu Nim Tao concept was Chu Shong-Tin. Especially how he been super skinny and old able to over power. I always thought calisthenics and Xiu Nim Tao has some connection.

    Great video, keep in mind Bruce Lee was only 5" 7" 137 pounds and had short legs like most women, that gave him aerobic advantages. By the way thin people and short people tend to live longer due to having better circulation, Bruce Lee strangly died at just 32.
