  • Police have dispersed demonstrators outside the Georgian Parliament in Tbilisi after it approved a 'foreign interference' law.
The new legislation was passed after weeks of mass protests.
Demonstrators fear it could be used to curb dissent and stand in the way of Georgia joining the European Union one day.
The new law will require organisations that get more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad to register with authorities.
The draft now goes to President Salome Zourabichvili, who has said she will veto it, but her decision can be overridden by another vote in parliament, controlled by the governing party and its allies.
Al Jazeera’s Dmitry Medvedenko reporting from Tbilisi, and to discuss this more we are joined by Alex Scrivener, he is the executive director of the think tank the Democratic Security Institute.

To anyone comparing this with FARA law! According to this law anyone can write down anonymous letter about suspicion that someone may be foreign agent and just submit it without any access procedure and government has rights to access any type of personal information about the suspected person or organisation :) please think what does that mean
In the end the fact is WE DON'T WANT RUSSIA!!!
Edit: I will clarify, anyone means not only organisations but regular people who consume any type of western media, will it be books, movies, videos or news :) stating any opposing opinion could also be considered being foreign agent because of influence. At any point it doesn't matter whether you are actually an organisation or just a citizen, whether you get support from any western country (and mind you Georgia heavily relies on western support, b/c government doesn't want to spend extra money for even cultural restorations :) so yea ), under just suspicion any citizen can be identified as single funded nonprofit organisation that didn't register itself :) there goes opposition what are we taking about then?
** In addition we ALREADY HAVE A LAW THAT REGULATES NON-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANOTHER VAGUE LAW THAT INVOLVES LABELING CITIZENS AS POTENTIAL AGENTS
to add to that, if you are under suspicion legally you can't go on with your regular life for at least 6 months. It's silencing out voices and nothing else, the law isn't even legalized yet and people are being brutally beaten and silenced already. and by brutally I mean do mean brutally, yet our government lies in our faces that police do what they have to and beating people up in pulp doesn't go against anything, if you are interested about the scale school aged kids are being arrested just for standing and protesting

Are you Russian? I thought about your name.
I guess a lot of them will try to go to EU if the people loose. Just like so many Russians did when Putin started his unprovoked war against Ukraine. Most of the population does not want to live in a Russian colony.
Acordong to polls about 80% of the population want Georgia to become members of EU. If they impose this new law the possibility to enter EU is 0%.
Why not have a referendum controlled by OSSE or UN about the new law? Not that ridiculous referendums Russia held in Ukraine where people were forced to vote in front of soldiers with AK47:s. I mean a FREE and DEMOCRATIC referendum

@@EG-gq1fn I don’t know where did you hear this fake new. EU is against this bill. And they never mentioned this. It is aboard. Of if this is a US law it is normal to have loopholes. But the west are experts on this, I doubt they would not bring it up.
The law requires media and non-governmental organisations to register as "pursuing the interests of a foreign power" if they receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad. However, opponents of the bill, who have dubbed it the "Russian law" because of similar legislation enacted by the Kremlin, say it undermines democracy and could derail the country’s chances of joining the EU.
