- Protesters are calling it the ‘Russian law’ - a bill in Georgia’s parliament that, if passed, would label any organization with over 20 percent foreign funding as a foreign agent. The bill has sparked widespread protests. Supporters say it protects Georgian sovereignty. How will it impact whether this small former Soviet republic leans toward Russia or toward the EU?

Any self respecting country would have similar laws
Georgia is not the only one country in the world to introduce such a law, there are many countries, the objective is to prevent external manipulations of internal politics and national decisions. Bill Gates wanted to push for family planning in Africa but politicians told him it is not his business, he wanted to introduce the 'OGM' and the decision makers said NO. He was thinking that with his money he could do anything he wants in other countries!
There is a significant difference between this law and existing laws. And it is very similar to one in Russia, so yes, you are right, Georgia is not the only country.
Do not forget, that the US has a very similar law!

Georgia wants primarily to be independent and being able to make a choice themselves. Being with Russia is never a choice. You can leave the EU. (not that Georgia will be part of it tomorrow). With the geopolitical situation and small size, Georgia unfortunately always had to make a choice to be on someone's side and could not really be on its own.

That is not “a Russia law” that is about a common sence law, all countries have something alike.
Georgians are not coming up with something. While similar laws exist, the specific law introduced in Georgia is very similar to law passed in Russia in 2012. You can further explore this topic and read the law, you'll find a difference.

@@khatiagelbakhiani Where can I fin the full text of the proposed law? I failed to find it. I have read some critics and don't agree with the criticisms. I think any organization that receives even 1% of foreign funding should be classified as a foreign agent.
Well, the context is that foreign “média outlets and NGO s” represent an important income provider to young people in Georgia, who are the majority of the protesters. The “funny” and weird element is that this law project is more lenient and tolerant than the western laws . So we understand what is the stake at these protests.....

Most probably right now their youth , lacking of experience and knowledge, is pushing the country in a civil war because of a law which is milder than the American FARA. The law is for more transparency and accountability.... the passing off this law is awesome to identify foreign agents. The contrived logic that this podcast hosts presents is an exercise in Orwellelian double speak... where transparency is bad and opaqueness is good when it comes to identifying which organizations are funded by foreign agents.
