Van Halen - "Eruption" Guitar (SOLO) Lesson #3 taught by Chelsea Constable

- Hello! This is myself demonstrating Eruption live. Amp is a Bray 4550. Cab is a StoneAge 4-12 w/ Celestion Heritage G12Ms. Mics are a Heil PR30 and PR40. The Gibson Explorer has a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge. Pedals between the guitar and amp are a Keeley 6 Stage Phaser and an 80's model Keeley modded Ibanez AD-9 for the very end, where my dad hit the pedal and turned the delay time down slowly. The reverb is added via wet/dry setup (using a Bray LO-1 Line Out Box that taps a signal from the Bray 4550 speaker output) using a Fender Super Reverb and Boss SE-50 effects unit that is sitting next to the Bray and StoneAge, and is also being picked up by the one microphone. I am very impressed. This IS the best version of eruption I have seen. You captured the feel of it. Too many players play this rushed. But you have the accuracy with the relaxed-ness that the original recording has. You even do the ending properly. Both thumbs up.
Had to come back and listen again after a few years. It's still probably the closest play thru I've ever seen. Friggin amazing....and the Bray amp still sounds just as great :)

That was the most accurate demo of Eruption playing and tone wise! I guess it also puts to rest the mystique of the pickup Eddie used on that 1rst album. Sure sounds like it was a DSD for sure!

I was 9 years old when this Van Halen debut album was released. Since then the are one of many of my idols. Me and my older brother listening to VH. Love the solo and you do it sooo good. No matter if you are a girl or a man.... you are a fantastic musician. And they who say another thing is just mean and jealous people. Happy Christmas wishes from Sweden.

You absolutely smoke!! Over the years every guitarist I see attempt "Eruption" hits the right notes, sometimes, but they all miss one thing, and it's unforgivable to me, and that's "SOUL"! Eddie had it in spades man! Every little pick scrape, dive bomb, vibrato, body and neck smack, or in Eddie's case, punch, had meaning. It's related to his ability to write amazing groundbreaking guitar riffs, song structures, and incredible stage presence. Between him and Dave I thought I died and went to rock n roll heaven! I am forty-five years OLD and when I was in high school in the eighties, only the few real badasses could even touch eruption. Nowadays its played by tons of budding guitarists. That said, Chelsea nails this one unlike ANYONE i have seen back in my day or now. If I wasnt watching I would have thought it was the album playing. KUDOS!!!

very, very, close (if not almost exactly) like the original recording. Great job! Obviously you have the dexterity & skills of great playing, but what I noticed was you must have great hearing - very tonally accurate. Thanks for the lesson, too!

Xyan Cuvilie - Eddie Van Halen's early days tone was mostly just distorted amp/guitar (bridge pickup/humbucker) and typically a Phase 90 pedal & Flanger pedal. On Eruption he basically uses the Phase 90 , at a low "rate" ....so it's just barely "percolating" the tone underneath the distortion . Also, - though it sounds mega distorted - EVH's amps were driven just enough (maybe slightly over) the "breakup" level ....on today's amps, with the "overdrive" or "distortion" knobs /options , you would only go about 1/3 of the max ,....maybe a bit over. It's all about CLARITY of the notes ........hope that helps .

wow I have checked out most of the eruption lessons and for some reason yours has helped me more than any to figure out the few bars I knew I had to tighten up...most people play the 4 "memorable" parts (hammer on , staccato, finger taps) and junk in between...I was one of those, but now thanks to you, I really think I got it...that section after the A G D power chords is gonna be the hardest and last I probably will have left to note for note, seems to be some really weird notes slipped into a simple box scale there...anyways, I don't know why you out of all the others have reached me to "get it" but I want to thank you for putting this up..i play a lot of solos and don't usually have problems picking them out by ear, but this giant has always intimidated me and now that I am close to nailing it, it really isn't so difficult per say as it is genius....thank you Chelsea...keep em coming !

This is what a guitar lesson is suppose to be like for us guitar players who get impatient with tabs and guitar theory. Just play through the video and lesson and pick it up quicker and train your ear to listen and play. Very awesome lesson
