End results that you can get with this lens, coupled with newer Fuji bodies such as X-T5, are pretty spectacular for the price. That combo is $2250 and you would need to spend at least $3375 on equivalent FF combo (like Sony A7R III + Samyang 135mm 1.7). That's a substantial difference and Fuji combo is also slightly smaller and lighter as well. Kudos to Viltrox for making Fuji system more competitive in the end.
I agree. In full frame field of view terms, I tend to find 135mm often too long, but I love my 105mm DC. So, back in Fujifilm terms, I would undoubtedly prefer this 75mm over my 90mm f/2. However, I already find that to be a spectacular lens and it focuses so close AND fast too... I've got very nice close shots of little flowers with it, in addition to headshots of my kids. But the 75mm would cut my ISO in less than half... Perhaps all I can do is buy this one, then use it and do some size by sides with the 90mm and decide which to keep... Me being me, I already want to keep both, though.. 🤦🏼♂️
I'll use the voightlander 58mm, and the Viltrox 75mm for portraits and the Viltrox13mm for anything wide. Looking at something around 10mm, any suggestions. This wallet looks great.
Viltrox has come a long way and makes one wonder why pay such high premiums for oem glass? Especially when Viltrox seems to accomplish 99% of lenses at double if not triple the cost. It would be more prudent to get this lens plus the new 56mm f1.2 over the 50mm f1.0 for example. Another fantastic review. I hope Viltrox will make RF mounts some day.
Thanks Dustin, great review. Being a recent and happy owner of the x-h2, that excellent lens at this price point?!... I've been a DSLR Canon shooter for the past 15 years but found the RF system so expensive! I just walked away and looked around, and found the Fujifilm system with much affordable lenses. And this Viltrox is so appealing!
Agree with prior comment on Canon RF glass being prohibitively expense for many users. I also moved on from Canon after nearly 40 years of using their products. I invested heavily in the Fujifilm lens lineup & have not been disappointed. The Viltrox 75mm f1.2 has recently been added to my kit, between the 56mm f1.2 & the 90mmf2. This lens really hits the “sweet spot” in focal length for me & IMHO is a very good value for its price point.😊
It's sad to me that Canon seems to have so many missteps in the transition to mirrorless and are losing long time Canon users like yourself. I love my R5 body, but I just find so many Canon lenses either underwhelming or prohibitively expensive.
This is very compelling! I do shoot quite a bit with a few 85mm lenses for outdoor portraiture and this is right there. I also take quite a bit with 135mm, more for landscape-with-sun/moon or wildlife and so I hope their next lens is around there. Then again, a nice fast walk-around 35 would hit nice too! Thanks for the great review, really appreciate the depth and many fine example shots you include.
Thank you for this review. I was quite interested in this lens, as I saw Viltrox improve their lenses over time. The 13mm 1.4 is a great lens and this looks really compelling. I think my old 56mm 1.2 from Fuji has strong competition!
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yes, because Viltrox only provided exactly 50 (!) lenses, Dustin. Keep up the great reviews, thank you. I wish beautiful New Year's Eve in advance
I sold my 90mm as soon as I saw reviews of this lens, what a treat, this lens really puts Fuji on a profesional Plainfield now for profesional wedding photographers like myself used to using bigger brands, I ordered one right away, still waiting to get it though, but oh boy I’m excited
They likely will. Although I would be surprised if we saw more than an incremental improvement (we will take it anyway, of course). But I suspect the hardware may be the biggest limiting factor here. I hope I am wrong! 😄
Got one of the 50 preorders too. Curious to compare it to my Viltrox 85mm f/1.8, a lens that I like a lot. About the manual focus stepping, probably it could be solved by firmware, since in AF the move is linear - if it is not a limitation of the focus ring encoder. Viltrox is VERY active in firmware updates - my 85mm improved a lot with updates. Good review as usual. 🙂
@@joe.nail1 If the bigger price is not an issue - totally. Is the sharpest lens that I have by far and the AF is a tad better than the 85mm. But the 85mm is a good lens, sharp as well (the 75mm is better because is off the charts), smaller and cost less.
I like the direction Viltrox is heading. Im looking to get the 13MM 1.4 on my Sony A6600! It simply blows away everything available on a wide aperture for a lot less. The Sony 14mm 1.8 is twice the cost! Competition is always a good thing.

Honestly, I'm VERY surprised... As someone who shoots Hasselblad, Sony and Leica, I'm used to superb Hassy, Zeiss, Voigtlander and Leica quality of optics... With that, as far as optics go, I can say that this Viltrox lens is close to, if not on par with some of the Zeiss, Leica and Voigtlander APO ASPH glass! Now, build quality and focusing motor could use a lot of improvement - but then again, I may be asking for far too much, from a lens that costs about 500 bucks, because again, optically, this lens is close to, if not on par with Zeiss, Leica and Voigtlander APO ASPH glass!
Amazing review Dustin, thank you! So happy that you have been testing these lenses with the 40MP sensor. One question I have is what lens for the XF mount would you recommend for weddings? I was considering this lens as a prime alternative, but wondering if the 50-140mm f 2.8 provides a better AF and reach alternatives.
The autofocus on this lens has been improved via firmware. I really like the new 56mm F1.2 WR, I like this lens, but the 50-140mm isn't amazing on 40MP. I think you'll see a replacement within a year.
Going to have to seriously consider this. The IQ is astoundingly good, and the DOF control is fantastic. But I don’t necessarily shoot a lot of portrait, the MFD isn’t exciting, and the smaller size (won’t block an XPro3 ovf) of the Sigma 56 is tempting. But 56/1.4 just doesn’t do what a 75/1.2 can…
Very good review, with charts but not boring ! Interesting, informative with a good rythm. Nice speed of speech in my opinion. Thank you. I wonder how does it compare with the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8.
In the excitement, nearly forgot to say/ask... I would be VERY interested in your thoughts about the 75mm vs the 56mm mk2! Perhaps a review of that is coming, that would be rather excellent 😁 (For me, in this case) forget the price difference and forget that I already have the 90mm 😅 Yes, I'm crazy.
Great video 👌 how does this lens compare to your favourite best Sony g or Voigtlander lenses for image quality?? Would be great to see where on your personal chart where this lens is placed in the top 20 of your best lenses
I have to admit that I don't do weddings at all, I just shot 2 weddings in my life, and therefore I used (at this time on my Sony) the 70200GM (for fuji it would be the 50-140) while the actual wedding, and the fast portrait lenses only for the stills after. I think the Viltrox is a good option (as its the only one today), but still hoping that Samyang comes up with one of their premium AF Lenses for Fuji, also some Sigma Art lenses for Fuji would be nice.
Thansk for your review Hope to see the lens in E Mount next year. Would be nice to see a sharpness comparison on the Sony A 6600 and the 7 R IV or A1 in crop mode. In general, it would be very informative if every full frame review would includ a short part about crop mode sharpness quality. Thanks greetings from Munich
Frankly, it is amazing what Viltrox has accomplished with this and some of their other lenses. Testing it on such a high resolutiin, unforgiving sensor would have shredded most lenses, but this 75mm came through with flying colors! Viltrox has rapidly become a serious contender producing world class lenses. What's a shame is that Canon has blocked Viltrox (and all 3rd party lens manufacturers) from making AF lenses for their RF mount cameras. This lens would be superb on an R7!
Really wanted to pre order this lens but there’s no telling when more will be made and I am impatient when it comes to waiting lol. I would love Samyang to make their 135 f1.8 with a Fuji X Mount. Wouldn’t that be amazing? A 200ish mm f1.8 prime for 1/5 the price of the Fuji 200mm f2.
Things in China are weird right now. They are dealing with COVID, supply chain, and some general economic unrest. Viltrox is a pretty aggressive company, however, so I think they'll get more available soon.
I have been enjoying your video reviews and it seems I am picking up a bad habit according to my wife. After watching the review and pondering over the findings I buy it (them). This happened again with the Viltrox 75 mm after the Viltrox 13 mm that I have been enjoying a lot to the detriment of my beloved 10-24 mm lens. One thing I discovered that the code Dustin14 only works one time...kind of interesting but understandable although defeats the original purpose. Thanks for the great reviews!
First of all, I haven’t tested that combo, but I see no reason why it wouldn’t work. All extension tubes do is put the optical path further from the sensor, allowing for closer focus at the expense of infinity focus.
For someone who already has Fuji 90 f2, do you think this adds anything over that lens? Is this better in any way? The Fuji has dual linear AF motors so should be better at AF but I do not think it will match the MTF performance of the new Viltrox ?
The Viltrox is a bit sharper, yes, but the Fuji is a very nice lens optically. If you already have it, you're probably good, though I will say I slightly prefer the focal length of the Viltrox for the versatility (there are more situations where you can use it).
Past: I got the Viltrox 13mm and I promised myself something. Stop buying gear!!!!!!! Today: Ok, the 75mm will be my last lens for the Fuji system. No really I mean it this time!!! Near future: hmm, Nikon released the Z8. Interesting!
Dustin, would you definitely conclude that the Viltrox 75 1.2 lens can resolve all the 40 MP? Just as Fuji has its lineup of native lenses that can resolve all that and some don't. Thanks
How is the bokeh geometry at f1.8, f2.8, and f/4.0? Do specular highlights become more circular or stay clipped at the edges of the frame? I know the samyang 75mm f/1.8 has circular bokeh right at f/1.8 but the viltrox is quite swirly wide open.
Hey Dustin great review. Thanks. Sorely tempted to spring for this one. I am held back by the fear that you and all the other positive reviewers on you tube have some kind of affiliation with Viltrox. Please say it isn't so!!
Is it really logical that every reviewer has been bought off? I can assure you that this isn't the case. I don't have any kind of unique affiliation with Viltrox.
Did anyone notice this lens has aperture issues - somewhere between 9-16 it often incorrectly opens the aperture and for instance f14 is brighter (bigger whole) then f13 and there is no difference between f9 and f10 (aperture doesn’t change at all. I know 99% of users value this lens for its superb quality at f1.2 but it is definitely the issue confirmed by the Viltox distributor and none of the firmware updates so far didn’t solve it.
Wow, much appreciated review. Especially that my main subject is pretty lively kid, I can safely cross out this lens from my wishlist. I have the viltrox 56/1.4 already, and if the continous auto focus is even worse then there's no point buyin it (for me!)
Very wise, buddy. So that's the 'little angel' speaking in the right ear. The 'little devil' 😈 speaking in the left ear would say: well, kids grow up quickly and quickly become responsive to posing requests and such 😄
Now, if *only* the hood would be like Sigma offerings, means full metal lens hood, instead of plastic. The lens is into it's price class without competition, a excellent #1 PRO lens from Viltrox.
@@RiposteThis I shoot since 1984. I've never, ever bumped a lens hood against anything. I care much about my gear and lenses, being always cautious. A metal lens hood is much more premium from build quality, and stylish.
@@marcp.1752 So from what you're saying, there is really no point it's just you being picky over something that doesn't matter at all. @@DustinAbbottTWI wow, it's in my purchase list!
Hi Dustin I am waiting review of Astrhori Lens 85mm f1.8 AF for Sony! pls share with us! Chees from Brazil
Unfortunately I have no current plans to review that lens.
Got a preorder, now time to explain to the wife. 😂
LOL - cross that bridge when you get there!
MF mode cannot be obtained by focusing ring on my XT5 + Viltrox 75mm f1.2 combo. Has anyone here found the same thing?
How is the bokeh geometry at f1.8, f2.8, and f/4.0? Do specular highlights become more circular or stay clipped at the edges of the frame? I know the samyang 75mm f/1.8 has circular bokeh right at f/1.8 but the viltrox is quite swirly wide open.
By F2 you’ll see more circular specular highlights.
Good to know.
The 'little devil' 😈 speaking in the left ear would say: well, kids grow up quickly and quickly become responsive to posing requests and such 😄
@@kzr83 good one 😂.
Love the dialogue here.
Are they going to make this w a Nikon Z Mount?
I don't know the answer to that, but I wouldn't be surprised.
I really hope this will go to E mount too
I'm very confident that it will within Q1 2023
@@DustinAbbottTWI yeah it would make sense since they have such a great lens made here
is it okay for Fuji XA3?
I'm not familiar with the camera, but as long as it has an X-mount, then yes.
Very Impressive!
It really is, and I've been even more impressed after reviewing other lenses that have struggled with this kind of resolution.
Best budget Portrait lens of all time?
It's definitely up there.
Maybe a dumb question, could this lens take a teleconverter?
I don't think so. There isn't enough room at the back.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks! They sold out instantly, I didn't make the cut... Good video!
Please tell them to bring this to Sony!!
They will.
Makes me want to sell off my XF90mm and XF56mm
That's fair. It really is that good.
Now, if *only* the hood would be like Sigma offerings, means full metal lens hood, instead of plastic. The lens is into it's price class without competition, a excellent #1 PRO lens from Viltrox.
Agreed.
Why? It's a lens hood.... and a good plastic will absorb impact better than a cheap metal any day of the week.
Especially at a $600 f1.2 lens that is optically almost perfect...
You remind me of those guys who can see an absolutely stunning woman, and then say you don't like them because their elbows are too pointy.
@@RiposteThis 1st your post doesnt make sense - i have not been picky about the lens IQ, but lens hood - different thing. 2nd this lens is great, i've seen all reviews the past 3 days , but what you don*t get or accept is - not everyone does share your, very own personal opinion! I like Metal lens hoods, not plastic, not rubber - just get this ! thanks.
I really think that manufacturers like Viltrox and Samyang will finally get SoCaNikon with their feet on the ground regarding their outrageous and not justified prices of their pro lenses.
In the end everybody will be forced to cut their prices to normal if they want to survive.
They are definitely exerting some pressure.
I hope Viltrox could update the 23mm f/1.4 to the same standard of the 75mm and 13mm.
That's doable, I'm sure.
viltrox will release 27mmf.12 soon
@@yunzhongxu8737 thanks! I've just found the rumors too. A set of 13mm, 27mm, and 75mm would be very compelling.
This lens paired with a used XT20 for $450 is the ultimate $1000 portrait setup. Bargain.
Absolutely.
Why do these images look noisy?
I don't think that they do, actually (definitely not in the originals), so I'm not sure what you're seeing.
nice chinese lens, for entry level photographers
Hmmm, not sure I agree on the entry level part. This image quality is on par with some of the best expensive lenses that I test.
Wow, that is horrifically judgmental and condescending! Well done if that was your goal.
WARNING Do not watch if youre on a youtube premium subscription.. you will see ads in here and I HATE ads and Im no longer following this channel due fact it runs ads in premium content
What are you on about there’s no ads
@@CoveringFish well I did see ads in mine don't know how you're not getting them.. most vids I don't see ads although on my computer this video is showing ads in my premium subscription
@Tim Pierce - if you are having that issue, that's something to take up with RUclips. It has nothing to do with this channel; I have no control over that.
I have premium there are no adds.
I am certainly not interested in this lens. There is no professional support.
The AF speed and accuracy does not convince me. My old Nikon 85/1.8 AFD seems to do better to be honest.
Are you saying there is no support out of experience? Also, curious about what you say about focus accuracy. I got great focus accuracy in my tests - much better that I saw with DSLR lenses in general.
It is sad to see that some have preconceived judgement without any solid facts. Just based on ignorance...But remember, ignorance is a dangerous thing!
