Clip gaining Vs. volume automation | KO

  • With clip gaining you change the audio file itself. Directly. I prefer to do this as it means I have much greater control, and faster too, over what happens down the line in terms of effects. It works equally well even if you send audio outside for outboard processing.
I break up the audio where needed and I level-match these clips before sending the audio down the line. Any small fade-ins and fade-outs to each clip I also do here. Perfect for manual de-essing as well.
This way the compressors work more gentle and with less side-effects.
I duplicate tracks with send effects like reverb and delays at different settings as well. Again, much better than automation which requires constant tweaking.
Automation is to me a dead end and very counter-intuitive in comparison to clip gaining. Clip gaining wins on KO in this house.

I've always liked this song, particularly for your novel vocal approach. All your vocals sound great, but this is equally nice in an alternative tone. Hoping to hear more of it!

I did make several songs for my first album where I sing with that voice. Never released them. ;-) Cheers

I agree. The performance aspect of riding the faders for the mix is lost (if one cares about such things), but the control and precision is much better in my opinion, and it's actually less tedious overall. Cheers!

I like to do this in Reason, too. Mostly I do it this way: After recording I cut the audio in logical pieces and remove the silences. Then I normalize all clips to 0 dB. Next is the thing you do here: Adjust every clip gain levels to my taste. For synth plugins on the other side I adjust the output levels as the first possibilty. Now it's time to switch to the virtual SSL console. Every mixer channel has an input gain knob. This is the best possibilty to even out every channel to say -10 dB without touching any fader. It's only the last stage for fine adjustment that I use the faders for attenuation and some automation.

Maybe I missed it somehow, but what is clip gaining? What are you actually doing in the DAW to achieve it?

Did you actually watch the video? ;-)

@@EspenKraft 😂 Yes. I didn’t know what I was looking for and I didn’t see a tutorial section. I saw you were clicking around a few things but I didn’t know what I was looking for exactly. I’m not familiar with that term clip gaining.

You can read the video description as I explain more of the process there. This isn't a tutorial as such, I just elaborate on why I prefer clip gaining to fader volume automation.

It can be a confusing concept, each 'event' has it's own gain setting that can be adjusted, seperate from the fader/volume automation and even seperate from the pre gain as far as I understand. So if you chop up a vocal track you can adjust the gain of each event and even everything out, even visually to a degree.
