This technique doesn't seem to work in Sketchup Make (2017). When you say "sample", I assume you're using the eye dropper tool in the materials pane, but when I use it, it just calculates a kind of average color and doesn't recognize it as a projected texture
When people demoing, use terminology like "way to get around this," you know your software has user issues. I have to search how to do this almost everytime I revisit the topic in my work to re-learn what I'm doing. What a time suck. I love the concept of creating control geometry to get the effect I'm looking for, but seriously.... for an everyday task like wrapping a texture, can they design these tools intuitively so we can make stuff without bowing down to how the application works? My license expires in a few weeks, and I get the fortune of renewing my access to tools that feel like they are from a decade ago.
Thanks for this, Josh. I had trouble projecting a transparent PNG onto a sphere I had coloured up as it made a hole in the sphere rather than overlay. Any suggestions?
I always have a lot of trouble projecting on more complex sufaces like a cushion or blanket. Sometimes i do several "controlled geometries" for different angles, but if the surface is very organic i never get it right. It is one of the main reasons why i consider leaving sketchup (i render with vray). If you could help me with that i would be just so relieved!!! cause i really enjoy using sku
Applying textures to curved/complex surfaces is not always easy to get right with the first attempt, but I think your approach is a good one. I often use different "control geometries" when trying to project a texture onto a really complex surface. I recommended looking into an extension for a little assistance. There are several options, but the first one that comes to mind is *SketchUV* [ extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/sketchuv ].
Thanks for the explanation ,but multiple selection of polygons of the same material should be possible to make "projected" in order to increase the workflow. Multiple selection doesn't work efficient for textures. Just a request for future updates or versions.
Может вместо видеоурока вы сделаете уже аналог UVW Map из 3ds Max!? 4 минуты нужно потратить на текстурирование одной поверхности, вместо того, чтобы сделать это за 3 клика, как в 3ds Max.
You can use the same process when applying a texture to a dome (either the convex or concave part). If there's a higher degree of curvature to your surface, you may just need to adjust the control geometry a few different times to get it right.
Buenas tardes. Gracias
Thanks a lot ! This is what I have been looking for a while . Thank you again.
Saved my life!! thank you! worked with a dome!
Fantastic!
Excellent tip/trick. Thanks Josh!!!
Thank you! Great tutorial!
Excellent, thank you.

What if it's a dome? How do I project a texture on it. Thanks!

Allah Bless You Sir.

Boom!
Is that you Taras Kul?
