As a pilot, you should be nervous every time you fly. I survived a plane crash at Richmond International Airport in Richmond, VA on April 11, 2011 due to catastrophic left engine failure of my aircraft immediately after takeoff. I suffered 65% burns, 68 total surgeries (so far), 2 amputated fingers on my right hand, a completely rebuilt nose, and hundreds upon hundreds of hours of physical, occupational, and psychological therapy. There are risks to everything we do in life, and some things are simply out of our control. I truly mean this when I say live each day to the fullest, tell your loved ones how much you love them, and be grateful for everything you have. I received a 2nd chance at life, and I’m thankful for that every single day.
I was on a plane that had fire after take off at Richmond. Scariest day of my life. Allegiant never refunded or offered hotel. I got PTSD from that episode.
Then you must know absolutely everything about the state of the helicopter, its systems and crew. Things the military and NTSB don’t yet, or possibly never will, know. So why not enlighten us?
Why are military helicopters flying training missions at night that intersect runway approaches on a very busy airport. Didn't anyone ever see this as being high risk activity
That’s the point. Military conducts extremely high risk training to sharpen skills, the pilot or the trainer were incompetent and clearly flying way too high for this flight profile. It sucks but accidents happen. Mourn, pay the families, move on, keep training.
@@JMac-oy1ff YOU TAKE YOUR HIGH RISK FLYING FAR AWAY SO STUPID MISTAKES DON'T NEEDLESSLY KILL INNOCENT CIVILIANS!! WHY ARE PEOPLE SO INCREDIBLY STUPID TO DO THIS CRAP??!!!!
Exactly that too!! Why in the world are they training at night and around the public. The helicopter fly straight into it, no zig zagging as they clam the video shows they flew directly into that plane!😞
That's gonna be hard considering many military aircraft share runways or are based out of same airport as commercial aircraft. You can't prevent this type of thing with your suggestion since that's just not feasible. My last base, Sheppard AFB, shared runways (or their runways were very close together). When you get on a flight out of the airport, during taxi you could see the USAF aircraft also while they were taking off.
Or perhaps that military aircraft must adhere to the same separation rules and ATC control as civilian aircraft unless they are acting in an emergency military situation. AKA: it's pretty stupid to have aircraft flying anywhere near the landing pattern of an active runway other than the landing aircraft.

That helicopter was literally in the path if that commercial jet coming into land on the runway at the airport. That military helicopter should not have been there
What's with all these people pretending that the phrase "x collided into y" is assigning blame to x???? That is not how English works so stop it with your fake outrage over something that wasn't said. If you run a red light and because your car was in the intersection my car collided into yours that doesn't mean I'm at fault. Having listened to ATC, their last comm's to the helicopter was to move behind the aircraft. Maybe that's what they were attempting to do, but if the helicopter was flying above the mandated 200ft, estimates are saying that it was closer to 300ft, with the aircraft descending from 400ft then it's possible that the helicopter pilot left the manoeuvre too late. Lowering altitude in front of a plane landing is also bad news 200ft or 400ft, that was a pass behind or cross in front if time permitted. A helicopter should never be underneath a landing jet. ATC made the right call it seems

Many pilots have commented on this and said that it can actually be surprisingly difficult to see traffic in an urban environment at night with all the lights. I get what you're saying but I don't think it is that simple.
Yes, like other folks are commenting here...I can't imagine why a helicopter training mission was running there in such busy airspace. When FAA asked the Chopper pilot if he saw the plane, he answered yes. That's probably why he elevated higher and deviated away from the path. However, FAA did not mention there were 2 planes and which plane he should avoid.
The pilot of the helicopter had to WATCH the sky in ALL directions, at ALL times, and for ALL visible planes. There was no low visibility at that time. You had to be blind to not see the plane. A rookie mistake.
I read somewhere that the helicopter pilots may have been wearing night vision goggles. They apparently impede light emitted from objects while enhancing overall ambient light at night. The helicopter was flying at an altitude above their designated altitude, and night vision goggles restrict light below the field of vision.
The Black Hawk was in the wrong place at the wrong altitude and the flight crew was wearing night vision goggles which gave them tunnel vision with very little peripheral vision. A tragedy waiting to happen. Rest in peace to all.

When you get on a flight out of the airport, during taxi you could see the USAF aircraft also while they were taking off.
The military trained their pilots like that so they can learn how to maneuver in the skies.

How couldn’t the helicopter pilot see the airplane? Given their paths, it must have been very hard not to see it!
Quite the opposite.
There are so many reasons they could’ve not seen each other… it’s truly not rocket science
Many pilots have commented on this and said that it can actually be surprisingly difficult to see traffic in an urban environment at night with all the lights. I get what you're saying but I don't think it is that simple.
@@zapador Its only hard when you aren't flying at the proper altitude and superimposing the aircraft on the ground instead of above the horizon.

Yes, like other folks are commenting here...I can't imagine why a helicopter training mission was running there in such busy airspace. If it's necessary, why not do it in the middle of the night when there are fewer planes taking off or landing. This was sadly...very avoidable. My father worked there at Reagan National for 20 years, and although small, its very congested...both on land and in the air.

I don't believe this crash was an accident. The elevation of the helicopter was actually ABOVE the airplane. The helicopter descended as it approached the airplane and hit it.

On the first video shown here it seems like he did try but was too late 🤔

I saw a vid that suggested the helicopter pilot was warned by air traffic control of a plane nearby, but thought the warning was about another aircraft passing his flight path. Apparently, his radar was turned off and was using only visuals to guide the helicopter. There is another plane close by that’s visible in another video.

No, they didn't. The flight path was approved ahead of take of. The pilot deviated.

I don't know why the media is making it a mystery...Pat-25 is not supposed to fly above 200feet. The collision with 5342 was around 350-400 Feet... doesn't matter how dark it is, there's a reason why aircraft beacons can be seen from as far as 10,000 feet. For the Black Hawk not being able to see 200,000 candelas from such a short distance is too suspicious. You guys shouldn't have found this vantage point, you can see the chopper accelerated as the plane came closer. The Night vision goggles the media is suggesting is urine on our heads while being told it's raining. If you analyze the video closely there is evidence of ballistics did one of the pilots eject? Why haven't they been found? Apparently night vision goggles restrict a chopper pilots peripheral vision.

Because they were never directly pointed at the helicopter.

When FAA asked the Chopper pilot if he saw the plane, he answered yes. That's probably why he elevated higher and deviated away from the path. However, FAA did not mention there were 2 planes and which plane he should avoid.
It could be terrorism. It could have been an intentional suicide mission by the military, targeting someone onboard that jet.
That's what it looks like to me too. I wonder who was aboard, what they may have known, what they were planning to do on arrival...
