- Back to the late 60's now and London Weekend's comedy; Please Sir! We take little look back and ask.....Where are they now?
The theme tune can be heard here.....

I am 61 now and still remember watching on Sunday nights. Brilliant!
I grew up watching this on TV and loved it. Knowing that most of them are dead makes me cry.
Sad to see some died relatively young also.
Yes I completely agree with you. I wanted everyone to be still with us. Obviously that's completely unrealistic. Sad to read of untimely deaths due to cancer. Glad of course to see a few still here. I feared the worst for Peter and Carol because you just don't see them on the TV. Stupid really when you think about it. There is work outside TV for actors. Must be great for that actress to retire in the late 1970s......
Melt, toughen up little soldier.
I think I should not watch anymore of these shows. So many of my memories have died. It makes me melancholy. Life is for the living.
It's sad to think that familiar faces from my youth have gone forever.
😂😅 Wonderful, made back in the day when the whole family 👪 could sit down and watch a comedy show together !...
Not quite accurate.
It dealt with controversial subjects to the WW2 generation.
Was overtly sexual, with the characters.
Particularly Sharon Mark 1 model
@@steffanhoffmann And what about 'controversial subjects to the present day generation' ? Or arn't they allowed to have any ? Such as.....what SEX are they allowed to be.....?
@@steffanhoffmann Not quite accurate. Very few of its viewers were WW2 generation. It was wonderful must-watch viewing for the whole family (and any of the minor sexual innuendo would have gone over the heads of most of the kids anyway) . Can't compare with what the woke committees dream up today: rubbish and repeats after repeats...
If I remember right it was on Sunday night at 7.25 pm. Happy times we all just to talk about it in the playground at school.
@Terria111 This is not a discussion about awareness: "People" might know "who they are meant to be" : Children in Kindergarten, however, certainly do not.
Please find another forum for your "wokeness drivel".
I’m 60 now and this brought memories flooding back. So many faces I haven’t seen in decades. Thank you for the video.
I could never get enough of watching this, sad to see some of them die so young.
It's heart-breaking to see how many of them died at such an early age. Was pleased to find out that Carol Hawkins is still with us, she is absolutely gorgeous
So many happy memories attached to this show.
I was only a little kid but I had such a crush on Maureen... So sad knowing she died so young.
One of my favourite programmes of al times. Thank you for this tribute, which is just beautifully done.
Good to see that the staff lived to pretty ripe old ages. Sad that some of the pupils didn't. 🙁
I loved 'Please Sir' when I was a kid. Simple, relatable family comedy
Not to the WW2 generation.
Who were the adults at that time.
It dealt with controversial subjects.
Was overtly sexual with the characters.
Particularly Sharon Mark 1 model
@@steffanhoffmann lighten up, it was a typical silly sitcom of the era.
If you thought that was overtly sexual, I wouldn't advise you to even switch on your television now. 😆
@@RosieHarp Lighten up suggests you are American, so wouldn't be aware of what I've just said.
I didn't say it was my viewpoint. I said WW2 generation.
So let's translate....World War 2 generation.
Now do you understand?
@@steffanhoffmann Hah I am absolutely, 100% *NOT* American.
My parents were of the generation you refer to. They just watched it and laughed without any deep analysis of sexual content.
Happy Days 😆
@@RosieHarp Fair enough
I loved "Please Sir".
My favourite character was Dennis.
Such a likeable chap without a bad bone in his body 🧡
and the innocent way he used to say b-l-o-o-d-y- !
He was
I remember the scene where, after being shown by Norman (the Caretaker, Deryck Guyler) how to sort the "Combustibles" from the "Non-Combustibles"...and ended up causing a disaster of sorts..... Cracks me up thinking about it.
We always watched this show, a classic British comedy, so sad to see how many of the cast died young, Dennis was so funny!
Lovely to see the cast again and to know what became of them all.
Thanks ...Days when tv was clean and free of swearing...
Very touching, lovely to see those that lived long lives and are still living. Very sad the ones taken far too young. A bit depressing , I am now one of the oldies. Its snuck up upon me.
What a fabulous tribute to real comedy which I remember with great fondness, every member of the cast a comedic character in their own right, this all brought together by the superb music.
Thank you.
Thank you for the information. Brings back happy memories of that era.
I never stop wanting to watch these episodes,so funny, and yet with an ever present underlying awareness of the gaps in our education system,in which family wealth and social position play such a major part in children's futures. This was a true masterpiece of social commentary and glorious entertainment at a time just before the rot began to set in everywhere.
Thank you. The effort and research that went into this was incredible. 👍
Oh my merry hell. I watched all of these people, and to learn that several were born in the early 20th century makes me feel old, now (I'm a 60s child). They all brought such laughter in my younger days.
'Upstairs Downstairs' one of the best British series of the time
One of the best comedies of it's day. My mates and I found it was so much like our sec mod school of the same period.
This certainly brought back a lot of memories for me from when I was still of primary school age. As I was watching the photo's of them at the start, I couldn't believe that I could still name most of the characters. Absolutely brilliant, thank you.
I loved to watch Please Sir when possible. I watched at home with my gran's. When the days of television viewing was worth watching, and had better actors and actresses. LWT provided good comedy programs back in the 1960s to the late 1970s.
We really did grow up in the best times
TV / Music / Cinema / Upton Park / Party 7's - we had the lot / just didn't realise it
Many happy memories ,please sir was a hit ,and a classic.!
I get a good belly laugh out of one episode where Potter (Deryck Guyler) is repainting the white lines in the school grounds. He mixes up the paint and says "Just the right contingency" rather than the correct word "Consistency". He played this part so well, a testament to his ability as an actor. In later life he moved to Australia and is buried there.
I recently found out that his funeral service was held at the church where my best mate's father was. St. Marks in Inala.
@@coover65 Sure was.
@@danielbrown4133😢
he was a Desert Rat , you know .... 😉
@@a.c.4732 Yes I remember that too 😂😂
Great situation comedy needs well defined characters.
This certainly had those.
Love the film version too.
Fantastic times!
God Bless 'em all. 👍
So sad those who died too young
Classic TV . They should bring them all back . instead of the shit they put on TV now . they seriously need to get rid of those so called reality TV shows. If you want reality TV just watch the news .. war, poverty, murder, drugs, ...
I agree, trouble is there will Be dialogue that won't suit today's wokes and snowflakes
@@Willsey it's all that bullshit political correctness . Country has gone soft .
Loved this serial & all their antics
Fond memories of this show. Thanks 👍
Thank you it is always nice to know 'where they are now' sad some of them are not with us anymore. Loved Please Sir and recently watched the film for the 10th time. Good viewing.
This brings back such memories for me. I was in the last couple of years at school myself when this was first aired and remember thinking, comedy aside, how different the church school was on the Isle of Wight where I lived to what I presume would be a comprehensive in London. We had some similar characters in my class though 😃.
Thanks for all your research. The effort was well worth it. Like many others it's kind of bitter sweet to watch these videos because you know some will be no longer with us. I just want everyone to have reached at least eighty so I feel genuinely saddened when I see some premature deaths. Very interesting none the less.
Thank you.
Yes indeed but I think Liz (Maureen ) shou have got a mention for the excellent role she played in The Naked Civil Servant film - which still gets shown today occasionally .
I remember we had a short honeymoon at an hotel on the south coast and Joan Sanderson was one of the guests while we we there. What a delightful gentle how Please Sir! was.
Even as a child i thought the 'kids' looked middle aged... Fond memories, especially the theme tune...
.........and now you think the Policemen and women look like kids! It comes to us all, Paul!
A very well done and informative tribute.. Easy on the eye and ear..👏🏻
I prefer to remember them all as they were back then in those more carefree days.... thanks for posting. Life is short folks, live it well 😉 my god Carol Hawkins was so fit 🫣
so sad that many of them are no longer with us I always enjoyed Please Sir
Brilliant video so sad many of them are no longer with us fantastic show I remember it from my childhood and the film too ♥️
Frankie Abbott's ("Mummy's little soldier") mum, Barbara Mitchell was great in this. Also Dennis's rotten dad played by Peter Bayliss.
Loved how the gang stood up for poor Dennis
@@ellenthorne8222 Croak croak! 😅
lol yeah in the film Barbara Mitchell was so sweet. bet she was just the same in real life. she's great in 'For the love of Ada' Deryck Guiler was a class actor, in a classic with syd James called The Big Job. so sad some of em died so young. bastard cancer, took my mum last month. ;-[
@@clintdavies491She was terrific - love watching her (and Jack Smethurst) in For The Love Of Ada.
Fifty years later, I still regularly use the expression "Mummy's little soldier", usually in relation to myself. ;-)
Quite the blast from the past. As many here will attest, we grew up watching shows like this; that so many are deceased - & relatively young too, is rather sad. To quote Chaucer, "Time & tide wait for no man...." The intimations of mortality..
I don't remember "sir" being inept. He was a good teacher doing a thankless task, but able to get the "better angels" out of a rag-tag bunch of dysfunctional students.
He demonstrated the hopeless position teachers had in an education system utterly inadequate to the needs of poorer families. He did a damned good job of doing that!
Derek Guyler was brilliant in the men from the ministry, a superb radio show with well over 170 episodes, hilarious show.
Joan Sanderson too.... Brilliant actress with such a character she perfected.... Her scenes in Fawlty Towers..... Simply classic!
@@patagualianmostly7437 loved her in All gas and gaters.
As a ten year old, penny spencer was the girl for me. Best part of the show.
Cats agree when I was a kid had a crush on sexy penny Spencer even got a photo sent to me by the D Mirror.
She was my favourite as well, and I was also ten years old when she was in it.
the first one / the second one didn't quite have that ....certain something ....😉
@@a.c.4732 Carol was far better than Penny any day , lovey looking also.
what a cast, RIP to the ones no longer with us god bless
Really appreciated this one. Thank you.
As a teenage boy, I could never pick between Penny Spencer or Carol Hawkins as to my favourite. And I remember the episode where Sharon and Maureen turned up to school wearing mini dresses. 'Potter' nearly had a heart attack! No way they could do an episode like that now.
Every1665 It's pathetic that girls in mini skirts wouldn't be allowed to be seen now,yet they can show horrific violence, and loads of swearing which is so acceptable. Why are the latter two not completely banned.??
@@johndean4765 I'd say modern media is heavily infested with feminists - and they have very odd moral values!
@@johndean4765 Mini skirts "wouldn't be allowed"? What nonsense. And Please Sir might not have any effing and blinding, but (like quite a few other comedies of the period), a surprising amount of "bloodies" (and Price's favourite, "bloody hell") that you'd be less likely to hear in a comedy shown early evening.
My secondary modern school was exactly like Please Sir, even the look of the school was a typical school of the day back in 70, in East London
there's a banging film set back then called "To Sir with Love" - Sidney Poitier
Lulu sang the theme tune which matched the films vibe perfectly . Watch it , if you haven't already
@a.c.4732 To Sir With Love, that was the British version of Blackboard jungle, a lot less harsh and gentle, another of the day Spare the Rod with Max Bygraves
@roberthayes9842 yes. and we all know how Max Bygraves loved to " tell you a story ! " 😉
Absolute f****** brilliant video, I used to watch it on a regular basis. I'm 77 years old now. And watched every episode, nostalgia to the heighes degree, I'm so sad some of the cast died so young.
Sad so many died at quite a young age. RIP. Ric from Oz 🙍♂️ 🇭🇲 🦘 👍 😎
Gosh. I feel so old after watching this.
Carol Hawkins..mmmmmm😋♥️
Carol Hawkins is no longer acting, she has been retired and living in Spain for ,at least, the last ten years.
i loved watching this with my mum, while dad was in the pub,sad a few died so young.
what memories
When the, older members of pass on, s'only to be expected though when younger folk RIP it's bloody sad
Hoot ! Hoot! I’m an owl still tickles me to this day😂
Thanks for this.
Also, Peter Bayliss who played "Dens Dad" i.e. Mr.Dunstable was born in 1922 and die, aged 80 in 2002.
Apparently, he was the holder of the longest list of West End credits,
Was he in the series or just the film?
@@bikemad The series,my friend.
I am not suggesting anything about this actor, who kept his sexuality secret but he did "appear" to be hanging around the Men's toilet in Central London when I went to either a Puv or Club there about 40 years ago and he seemed inebriated. lol
@@Isleofskye He was in the film too and stole the show as Denis" dad.
@@edwardpink2759 Thanks,Edward.
Barbara Mitchell who played Frankie Abbot's mum was also very good.
This is a very lovely video. Very respectful of the cast and much more than just, where are they now, also what they did too. Love it.
A really good presentation and a nice choice of music. Thank you
Thank you.
Great video, loved looking back on time.
We used to live near Carol Hawkins in Murcia, southern Spain, she ran an animal sanctuary there and I believe still does. Still a looker!
In many ways the characters on this show reminded me of those in "Please Sir" If not
in appearance, but in the characters they played. I "Loved this Show" just to know how
disfunctional our "Class of 69 - 74" were back then. Here in the North East of England.
A great tribute it brought back lots of memories, , well presented.
Great show reflective of the times. Thought it particularly hilarious that Duffy looked older than Hedges
Very interesting, thanks for posting. It's amazing, considering they played classmates, that their ages ranged by ten years.
Thanks for this, I remember them well.
if I remember correctly it first showed in the early seventies on ITV . the first episode was on after news at ten (odd time), about 10.30. The whole family watched it. Brilliant show and the films from it too
They were the oldest fifth formers ever!
They must have been the oldest school pupils ever.
I think all the 'kids' in American high school movies were even older.
I was thinking the same myself, they were all in their twenties.
@clivenewman4810 Very true😂. Mind you, I was 16 years old when Please Sir first aired and I found the 'children' totally believable. I loved that show. It had such a wonderful cast.
Eric must have been in his 30s lol
I thought the same
Imagine if they could have filmed the show in a movie town like Chillingbourne.
There was a good reason why Sir looked no older than his class!!
When school kids looked 25.
Thanks so very much for this, well done, and fabulous background music.
Absolutely loved Please Sir, watched avidly and the characters were brilliant.
Heart-breaking that several have passed away, so well done on tracing their history and current or recent pics. excellent video!
Thank you Derek. Much appreciated. Thanks for watching.
@@gstv-uk More than welcome, keep up the great work.
Great Memories .... :-))
Maureen was my secret crush when I was a lad. But then, I always preferred Velma to Daphne as well. ❤

I bet you Shaggy's got a few stories about Velma / Daphne and that van !!!
Great video. Thanks.
Excellent video. 🎉
Fond memories 👌
I once knew a bloke who was just like Duffy. LOL
awesome
Also Brinsley Forde who played Winston in Please Sir! later joined the 1980s reggae group Aswad.
Wesley.
Thank You ! I was trying to think where I knew him from ....
And don't forget! Nobody messes with Frankie Abbot!
I had an enormous crush on Penny Spencer when I was 11 years of age.❤
Its great to find out what happened to those people who entertained you so brilliantly while you were growing up i used to watch this and the sequal the fenn street gang
HOOT! HOOT!
Interesting. I was still at senior school when Please Sir first started, everyone at school was talking about it after the first episode aired. Surprisingly, few of the actors who played the pupils had major success and quite a few died at a relatively young age. I loved the programme in its early years however the decision to keep making more episodes after John Alderton left the show wasn’t a good idea and the quality dipped. A feature film was also made, films of successful tv comedies are rarely very good but Pleasure wasn’t at all bad
I always remember Malcolm McFee playing a jack the lad petty criminal in a more light hearted episode of The Sweeney where he ( and Reagan,) is petrified of his future mother-in- law played by Diana Dors! I believe Peter Cleall also went on to be an agent as well as continuing work as an actor.
The Sweeney episode was called Messenger of the Gods and Malcolm McFee played Lukey Sparrow...... watched it many times, the farce in the last 5 minutes with Diana Dors fainting and falling on the wedding cake is hilarious.... sorry bit off topic..... 😄
I saw this back in the day and learning that some of them are dead makes me realize that that is what happens to people who live. One small gripe: bit misleading to see their later careers ignored, as if time stood still. Not even nostalgia can do that :)
No mention of Deryck Guyler,s ability to play the washboard as he did on various chat shows
Why are we saying 'students' and not 'pupils'?
thats the american invasion of England and our language.
Loved this. Frankie Abbott was my crush 😊 I must've been about 6 or 7!
Enjoyed it back in the day, had a crush on Penny Spencer, but always felt they were all to old to play schoolchildren, looking at their dates of Birth I can see why
