- [Part 1 of 2] Look at who's throwing out Western notions of superiority faster than any of them can say Kuala Lumpur. For years, Europeans have been belittling ASEAN for not being as integrated as the EU. Now the tables have turned. Nobody in Southeast Asia would even dream of still looking at the EU as a role-model. The block has lost all and any attraction, not just because of its increasingly undemocratic approach to micro-managing members, but also because of its absolute subservience to US interests.
ASEAN countries are now discovering that their arrangement, which does not interfere in each-others affairs, is in fact the winning strategy and the backbone of the new multipolarity. What's more, they have so much experience in handling not just former colonisers but also China that they are in a pole-position for benefitting from the new order.

John Pang has served in policy and thought leadership in government, business and academia with a focus on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He was also the founding CEO of the ASEAN research institute and of the council of Southeast Asian business leaders, consulting firms and decision makers in government and business. Dr. Naoko Kumada is a Lecturer in Zhejiang University's School of International Studies. She is a social anthropologist and Myanmar specialist, studying the interaction of politics, religion, and legal order in East Asia. She received her PhD in social anthropology from the University of Cambridge and also holds an LLM in US Law from Santa Clara University.
We Vietnamese nod enthusiastically and chuckle secretly when we listen to western people telling us what we should do with China, as if we hadn't lived next to them for over 2 milliennia and had relations in all imaginable ways with them already, ha!

The ASEAN block are a UNIQUE group of nations with a population 600 million and a combined GDP 2024 of 3.7 Trillion. Economically a robust group located in SE Asia, a unique blend of neutrality, trade with China / worldwide posing no threat to any external powees yet peaceful and forward looking to contribute. The world should let them prosper. Politically stable, economically progressive and consensually focused. A Microcosm of its own unique blend of the future.
Before watching this interview I saw a short video with a guy and a girl.
"He asks:
- Where are you from?
- I'm from Texas. - replies the girl.
- Can you tell me the names of 5 European countries?
After thinking for a few seconds, the girl says.
- Australia.
- Some more?
The girl thinks and responds.
-That's all I got."
Interviewees here made interesting comments about the ineffectiveness of the ridiculous discourse that Europeans and Americans use in southwest China to try to co-opt Asians. But we must remember that this same discourse is very efficient when used in Australia, a paradoxically non-Asian country in Asia.
It's easy to laugh watching the video I mentioned at the beginning. But the truth is that that poor, ignorant girl from Texas is a victim of the American disinformation system. Australians are also victims of a similar disinformation system.
Australia is located in Asia and harbors immense distrust, envy and aggression towards China and its partners in the region. The Australians bought Anglo/American nuclear submarines because according to them the country is afraid of being invaded by the Chinese. And yet for thousands of years China never showed any interest in colonizing Australia, it was the English who did this by transforming that island continent into a prison and enslaving the local native peoples.
Chinese fleets arrived in Africa earlier than the West, but they only brought back giraffes and ivory, while Western fleets sold African black people as slaves.
"Smart shaming" is ridicule and punishment of any deeper or critical thinking and knowledge.
Who coined that expression? The Filipinos. They knew exactly.
The Germans even have a hate-word for that. A guy who attempts to introduce critical remarks and arguments (especially since the pandemic) is called "Schwurbler". Yes there are some right-wingers who are critical about vaccines and there are classic anti-vaxxers. But the whole debate got out of control. It has become pseudo-religious and authoritarian. It became more important to crucify and cremate a witch or sorcerer (=heterodox) than to find common ground and solve a problem.
That’s why the Europeans defined Australia to be in Oceania not in Asia.

One must look at the demographics of the Aussie population. That's where the distrust or should I say fear of China comes from. The west has always held sway over most of the world with it's military for centuries during the colonisation. They treated the colonies as milking cows and the locals as inferior humans. That mentality has stayed.

I'm glad ASEAN never allowed itself to be pressured to change and become the EU. We are a different concept and time will show the different values it enables vs an EU-style organisation. Yes, it isn't able to do some things as well, but Eurocentrics only see that part rather than also the part where it can on the other hand, accomplish or be immune to entirely different things. Perhaps each type is suited to each region, as we organise according to the risks we perceive as the priority.
Edit: I agree with John that decolonisation isn't done until our countries can restore the ways that we once related to one another before colonisation (except maybe Singapore, which arguably does not need this part), because those were sovereign decisions which were rooted in the logic and worldview of our own cultures. I'll give an example: in pre-colonial times, even though the region had wars just like any other in medieval periods, diplomatic relations between trading nations were fairly equal. Equal as in, even a country as large as China might marry their princesses to a Southeast Asian royal to seal a diplomatic relationship. However, when the Europeans came in to "trade", not a single one of them would have considered it as anything but beneath them to marry their royals to ours. And many of us have internalised that inferiority complex through the centuries of colonisation. Now, of course we're no longer in an era where we have to cement diplomatic relations with monarchic marriages anymore, and nobody is interested in reviving that, but recovering the worldview where we hold ourselves and our cultures as inherently equal to other nation-cultures, is part of finishing the decolonisation process.
Edit 2: I think you can understand ASEAN's actions better if your culture is also comprised of the 'extended family'.

50+ yrs ago , I started to question why colonialism have happen when the Spanish , Portuguese , Dutch, French English American s and Japanese.
As a high school student , didn't know much then , luckily our school library has good collections of world history books , a fantastic high school tea her , a great librarian who like to engage on the books that I borrowed , and my cousin a great mentor .
1 good tip I learned from them ,
Don't just read the history as written from the mind and study of the author , the author could be lazy , or rushing to write the book , etc .
They said READ BETWEEN the lines,
Read BEHIND the lines ,
Turn the story upside down ,
Filter & Shake all the book lines , and come to your conclusion .
Regarding colonialism from a high school student ,
Colonialism is conquest /conquer / & confiscate.
Later years ,
It's the extraction of everything from the colonies ,
Resources like human and material resources .
Taking them , and brainwashing them make them loyal and wanting to be a colonial slaves.

ASEAN represents Southeast Asia countries wisdom, intelligence, pragmatism. How they interact with each other to resolve problems, or mitigate issues from further escalations. There will always be issues. There is no need for colonialists & imperialists to be the police, and dictating the rules and how ASEAN should behave. Only through diplomacy, conversation, discussion to help resolve and/or mitigate problems.

4. African countries - Still to be categorized

6. South America - Past victims of the bully.
7. Oceania - Can't decide if it wants to side with the West or East.
Historically you're right about Europe but the main current driver of division in Europe is the US who pretends to still be occupying Europe to maintain peace and stability while driving a wedge between the main natural eurasian trading partners through coups, color revolutions, extremism and war for nothing but the US maintaining global hegemony.
Africa - Cradle of humanity. Like the babe in the cradle filled to the bursting with youthful potentialities. Wild and uncouth like a rebellious youth suffering from the traumas of brutal abuses therefore deeply damaged but also with the resilience and vibrancy of youth. Wish just 1/10th of this quality and diversity of folks were featured in our press and think tanks here in the US. But I guess we have been fed with such freak shows by western media over the past 3 decades - it would be unthinkable to comprehend another perspective by our editors, directors and most viewers.
This is so fascinating to hear, being here in NZ where it is still fully colonized as is Australia. So hope we can all stand up against the "western" powers. I am caucasian however i stand for the rights of indigenous of each country and the unfair practises that they have suffered

Thailand used to be called the Coup Capital of the world because of the near-constant coups it was experiencing, mostly due to the imperialistic influence of certain western countries. The Philippines is a prime example that colonialism still clings on to power in Southeast Asia. The US will not abandon its Borgian objectives in Southeast Asia quietly. In fact, the Philippines is where the US perfected its colonialist policy under the guise of "benevolence". People still remember that it was President McKinley who formulated the US "Benevolent Assimilation" policy of assimilating everyone into the American culture, political structure and even language.

Your cellphone is brought by Western culture of democracy and freedom. So those aren't directly influenced by US similar to PH doesn't mean you aren't influenced by the US. Almost all countries in ASEAN thrive because of capitalism! Development is also indirectly brought by capitalism.

Observation…ASEAN’s patience with its members seems to recognize the “everlasting” of culture, while acknowledging the more transient struggles we all have with the current situations. All changes bring stresses. The major stresses for individuals are usually due to, loss of income, loss of a loved one, or changing one’s location etc. However, as time passes, we return to our normal way of dealing with our relationships. This is a very mature approach to life in general.

Simply, there is a lot of people in Southeast Asia who are multilingual, particularly in Malaysia and Singapore, where, if they are inquisitive and would like to seek information and perspectives, they are equipped to read not only the Anglo-Saxon media, but also the the Chinese language, Bahasa and also Hindi/Tamil, which helps them weave through what's impartial and what's agenda-driven, if they actually try.

This is very interesting to me. Im a westerner whos been living in South East Asia for many years and marveling how Asia (especially China) has been moving boldly into the future, while the west clings on to the old ways and old beliefs. I think maybe the desparate attempts to paint China as backwards and dangerous is just the wests way to avoid moving forward themselves. I love Asia!
Alhamdulillah, John mentioned why we Malaysian accepting or leaning towards more to China. It is sad to see if our ASEAN is divided into 2, you know which countries that disagreed with the rest.
Don't forget Malaysia has huge ethnic Chinese population
@@HenryKajana actually both Indonesia and Thailand have larger populations of ethnic Chinese than Malaysia. In fact in both countries the numbers double that of Malaysia.

After WWII, US realise its beneficial to help other countries post war redevelopment and able to influence the politic in this countries. Soon US have foot print in almost every chaos in the world but there are never any military confrontation with a developed countries with a relatively advance military power.
Even thou US involved in most war but never win any. As for South China Sea chaos, from historical US carrier fleet on the term of freedom of navigation will be sail through Strait of Taiwan to showcase their naval power to pressure China but now with China development of naval power strong enough to go against US. China drawn the sea border to keep the US out and in check with their long range aircraft carrier killer missile.
Any Western involvement will not benefit ASEAN. Its mainly for their self interest or agenda. Hungry and Slovakia are never really treated as part of EU, while Serbia and Turkey application into EU are always lips service only.

I recall Karmala Harris' recent trip to convince the Vietnamese that they should take a more aggressive stance to China, you could literally see all of the Vietnamese officials biting their lips to keep themselves from laughing in her face. Why the hell would Vietnam want to pick a fight with their nearest neighbour of 1.3 billion people, and their most important trade partner. I think to try seal the deal the US offered them a few tens of millions of dollars in aid, which just seemed like an insult.
As I was listening to your program I was sitting in Battambang, Cambodia, writing a research report on sustainable agriculture in ASEAN countries. The main point where I would disagree with your analysis is that whilst SE Asian countries are really starting to put the political beast of colonialism in its grave, economic colonialism is still quite strong, particularly in the plantations and mining sectors, but you know, the national governments also lean into these sectors for the foreign exchange, whilst throwing their own people and environment under the bus of bad terms of trade and externalization of production costs.
The best stand against western hegemony was done by late Singapore founder and he said Singapore can never become a Christian country with their values because there is something special and beautiful about values from ancient Chinese and Indian culture. That sums up where Asia and Asean should stand for.
Christian mentality of "waiting for a miracle" completely contradicts Chinese hardworking ethics & discipline.

I think and would say that it was the Indochina Wars and the Indonesian Wars. Those didn't end until late 90s/early 2Ks. So there's still reconciliation coming around. With the Phillipines still being a quasi-colony of the US. The region is still in the decolonizing process. That said, ASEAN is much farther ahead than Africa is.
Asia, Southeast Asia in particular, is always a territory of peace until western colonizer moved in starting 16th century when China took the world center stance, and a strong and peace-loving China will continue to play a vital role to make peace as desirable as possible after China rise up again. I also believe ASEAN can be seem as a role model to the rest of world where “multipolarity” is a doable and salutary path forward thru peaceful co-existence first and become co-prosperous afterwards. The bottom line is we must learn from history that “conflict and bloodshed only happened as a result of failed diplomacy”, and rule #1 of diplomacy is “talk” to your adversary and #2 seeking acceptable compromise after understanding what your adversary’s concern.
That's because pre 16th century Southeast Asia had fuck all going for it. You can't start a war with another SeS nation if you can't even build a boat big enough to travel that far.

ASEAN essentially is a economic entity. Yes, over the decades, it evolves with some political integration in terms of political views. Yet, it never and should not aspire to be EU where it overrides national or local governments, breaching democratic principles. These EU Parliament who were not elected by the people of the countries of EU, yet their decisions are binding on member countries, robbing them of their national sovereignty. ASEAN does not interfere with the domestic politics and development of member countries.
The American Committee on United Europe was a OSS/CIA project now called the EU.
The EU Parliament is elected by people across the EU, but it is not where the decision making power resides. The Commission is absolutely not a democratic organisation, the appointments are decided behind closed doors and rubber stamped by Parliament.

Hmm.... I question the non-alignment of Philippines, especially since it is one of the original signatories to the ASEAN pact. Also before the military took over, Myanmar was drifting towards the West with many instigators working within its borders. I witness their handiwork with the democratic government and the officials.
There are still US mercenary providing training and instigating war with the Myanmar gov happening. With these interferences Myanmar would be hard to reconcile. Time is what they have if they want a Myanmar gov or otherwise though their love for ASSK is a phenomenon 😅❤

Most victories by the resistance in recent months are mainly by China-aligned groups and the military is now openly angry with China for this. China seems to play both sides actively though, while the West just talks without action.

US economic aid has dwindled ever since the 90s when the first Aquino administration shut down Clark AFB. Also, the territorial scuffles in the South China Sea are utilized to drive more opposition to China among the electorate compared to other SEA countries.

But there are still many countries in Asia that still do not understand the good intentions of this aims until now like Malaysia.

Counter strategy to "divide and rule": Start pulling the rug from underneath the feet of these eternal meddlers...
*Boycott:* Much simpler than trying to remember the long loooong lists of what _not_ to buy, and for whatever specific reasons, is to try and limit what one actually _does_ buy: *buy no-name brands from small companies (addresses usually on the labels), buy local foods (farmers markets), buy locally produced or handmade items, otherwise go slightly "over-regional," or buy fair trade wherever possible.*
It is not a perfect strategy, but don't get sidelined by the whiners/finger pointers who will invariably ALWAYS show up like clockwork, trying to ridicule or nag with their dumb _"...duh but your using a smartphone, but your using oil toooo"-gotcha style_ distractions. It is not MEANT to be "perfect"...

ASEAN focuses on cooperation between its member countries under an agreement not to interfere with others' internal affairs. It doesnot join forces to get engaged in unanimous votes to dictate any member or establishing a group stance towards situations around the world. EU and NATO members believe it is more powerful while taking orders from USA shamelessly. But western culture might not be known fora sense of shame.

The 'expert' discussion came off extremely biased. Yes most ASEAN regions suffered from the West for decades and is pivoting towards China, but they should see Myanmar as a warning sign. The West never really got to fully exploit Myanmar like China had been since the 90s.
First off, China ,not just the West, has been practising neocolonialism in SEA with their extractionist policies especially obvious in Myanmar. Historically, China also invaded Myanmar 3 times in the 1700s without success. Chinese foreign policy towards Myanmar is blatantly extractionist to the point that most people from both left and right political spectrums see China as the big bully instead of the West.
And to ASEAN, most seem disappointed. While the military supporters anger at ASEAN for not recognising the legitimacy of the junta, most people are disappointed at ASEAN for not intervening enough. It's obvious the military leadership won't give into ASEAN peace demands and endless meetings won't solve the crises. But the 'non-interventionist' policy of ASEAN effectively blocks any meaningful action to take place at all.
ASEAN is treating Myanmar like how the West is treating Isreal. Both talks about peace and togetherness while ignoring warcrimes and unwilling to enforce meaningful action. ASEAN is not free of hypocrisy.
