- Summary:
I thought this was a slow day being that not a lot of trophy fish were pulled up, but in reviewing the videos, it was pretty action packed, just not the action we usually crave. From amberjack to shark to barracuda to kawakawa, there was a whole gambit of action, but the real adventure happened on the way in! CAPSIZED and lost all my gear!!!
New Merch!!! I don’t really aim to make money on the merchandise, it’s more to just have something for anyone who would like a shirt, mug, etc. Check it out on TeePublic at tee.pub/lic/pnZm8TcpqEI
Kayak: 2014 Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14

Main and backup rods: Silver Hook 6'6" Medium Heavy, Shimano Trevala 5'8" Extra Heavy
Bait rod: Shimano Grappler Type J (it was for my old conventional depth counter reel, but I swill use it with a spinner, probably why the line makes noise when I reel it in)
Reels: Shimano SpeedMaster 25ii (a.co/d/8EkZHpP), Penn Squal 50LD (aka “the lucky reel” a.co/d/4e1nOBL), Shimano Stella SW 5000 (Bait Reel a.co/d/1o3UXaC), Penn Spinfisher VI 8500 (Hilo Main Reels a.co/d/9ES1yQQ), Shimano TwinPower 5000 (Hilo Bait Reel a.co/d/4nPNush).
Line and terminal tackle: 65-80 lb PowerPro (a.co/d/bvOGdsx), 40/50/60lb J-Line Fluorocarbon, 40-55lb AFW wire leader.
Owner 4/0 & 5/0 circle hooks, Gamakatsu 4/0 & 5/0 live bait hooks, Diablo or VMC 2/0 inline hooks for stinger when using wire (hifishgear.com BKK Lone Diablo Inline Hook - HiFishGear).
Damashi: Homemade using line between 12-16lb, typically J-Flouro Samurai. I typically tie my own flies. When using lures, I like Tylah lures or CHL Nox Minnows, both I set up with gold hooks and a red bead which I find to be very effective and highly recommend them. (Tylahlures.com and chlures.com and check out my buddy (Geronimo Angeles | Facebook) for those BiteLytes!
Camera: GoPro Hero 8 Black, GoPro Hero 9 Black
Note: I link the amazon links for ease of finding products and ease or purchase/delivery, but I highly recommend shopping at your local fishing stores and support them (like www.hawaiinearshorefishing.com or www.hifishgear.com).

I'm impressed you were able to flip the kayak back over with all that water in it. I also always keep my radio attached to me
Just happy u safea, always good to touch up on safety. Everyone getting home is the most important thing
Good to see you had the skills to riggt the boat. I did the same and lost gear : brand new pole and reel by overloading my kayak. Usually I go solo - this time took my son with me and total weight made the kayak unstable. Flipped it 4 times - no life vest for me - totally gassed and borderline panick. Last time I'm going to act like the man out on the water. Tie all gear and wear a life jacket.
I’m glad you shared this. Good lesson for everyone! Yeah I lost like $2500 in gear this day. That sucked. I’m just glad to hear you and your son both made it back safe that day!
I tether myself to the kayak for two reasons...1) I go when it is rough sometimes and I don't want to be separated from my kayak and 2) i can use that tether as the "leverage strap" that you mentioned. I hulied once and this made it SOOO much easier to flip the outback back over.
Hi and Aloha… spent the weekend watching your videos. And subscribed.
Well Done Sir 🤙🌴🌺
@@danlayman2194 thanks for following bro!!!
That escalated quick man main thing you got back in safe. Gear can be replaced.
Also maybe time for fresh start on a new yak if you can't patch that crack! That or install an auto bilge pump and keep the trips short!
I was visiting Stan and eyeing out the new outback or compass duo (to take my kid out too if he wants to join). But my buddy Elliot and I put in some hours fixing that bugger up the right way this time! I’ll messenger you too to chat more about it haha.
Always put a leash on your gear or put it in a floatable bag. Good luck on your next sesh!!
Thanks for sharing your experience main thing you made it home safe 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Rajah that! Safe fishing my friend 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you for sharing this. I’m glad you’re ok. 2 bilges from now on for sure. That current can get ripping sometimes. Keep up the good fishing. Love watching when I can’t get out. Aloha!
Thanks for the comment! It’s always so nice to hear that people out there actually like to watch the fishing 😂
@@wheres_d_ahi I’d love to go out with you sometime. I have an old town pedal drive. I work in aviation and don’t have normal days off so I end up fishing alone on weekdays. I’m new to kayak fishing but still do a lot of fishing from my boat too. My kayak is on Oahu but my boat isn’t. I haven’t been out in 3 weeks. It’s good to see opelu again. I was only getting akule for a bit. Have a good one!
Wow, didn't take much to flip after your hull was full of water. Thank your for sharing this with the rest of us. You were very clear thinking in the aftermath, figuring out how to right your wide kayak, climb in on the wave facing side, and start bilging right away. Even if you are fishing with partners, it's so important to self-rescue since help is often minutes away. So glad you're ok Devan!
At least we can use this as a teaching moment for proper safety gear, and to highlight the importance of being able to right your vessel before venturing out into the deep blue to fish! And to get people to buy some leashes/tethers from hawaiinearshorefishing.com!
@@wheres_d_ahi Haha, thanks for the plug Devan! Always trying to assist others!
What does not kill you makes you stronger and smarter! I sank a kayak with my 5 year old son on board. Unfortunately I did non have a Bilge pump. I had a cell phone in a water proof bag. I was able to call my mother who call in the lifeguards on jet skis from Sunset Beach. We were rescued and now I always go out with life jacket, radio, and epirb all ready to go when needed. Oh and bilge pump!
One you never told me that story!! How scary with your son! Bilge in the hatch!!! Lol. I’m glad you’re still around to share that story with us.
Those donkey kahalas lol!!! 😂still no believe guys like the 🪱 worms, if that’s the case we can keep them and sell them to u lol
So humbug to bring those heavy ass fish in then struggle to find someone to sell it too haha. The only time I would keep um is if Bill was fishing with us that day lol.
Si sad to see that 😢, hope you'll recover quickly🤞
I’ll be back on the water soon! No being fun shy here. But I got more tethers haha.
Glad you ok Bro. Sorry you lost so much stuff. Damn
Thanks man! It was some time ago now, so the sting of losing the gear is long gone haha. Tethers! 🤣
I know the pain. I borrowed a buddies tandem and took my dad out a while ago and we ended up flipping. Lost a bunch of gear. But staying calm and collected helped. Learned some things the hard way.
Thank God you’re all safe and sound.
Thanks brother 🙏🏽
Glad all is well in the end. Gear you can replace good friends and people you can't. Aloha from the Valley Isle
I think you handled it pretty well I had to turn my budddies PA over for him because he couldn’t. He’s lucky I was out that day because he was by himself with no radio. We need to let these guys know they must practice it because when you’re off shore with the wind and the waves and a loaded kayak it can get wild and be much more difficult/dangerous
Thanks man. Yeah, I think it's super important to be able to flip your own yak. In fact, I think you should learn that in flat perfect conditions with no gear before even going out at all. Too many people jump right into fishing without learning the safety side of things! Glad you were there to help your buddy out that day!
Glad you made it back safe. Keep up the tight lines. Epirb is a must. Your life is worth more than $300 🤙
This exact thing happened to me yesterday in long beach ca glad your ok!
Hope you didn’t lose all your expensive gear too! Glad you are commenting, means you got in safe!! 🙏🏽
@@wheres_d_ahi Lost two good ploes and reels but at least im safe thanks.
yup...gotta have the Epirb, Best $400-500 you will ever spend, got one on our boat and 2 on the life-jackets
Bro, like I can’t justify not having one when out on the water! You have it right my friend!!!!
Wow, sure glad you made it back to shore okay. This is a fisherman’s nightmare. I definitely going to practice flipping my boat!
This video might even save someone’s life down the road.
Thanks for sharing.
Aloha and STAY safe!
If it even slightly comes in handy for someone being prepared, that’s worth all the gear in the world. Thanks for the kind words bro!!
That was scary 😨. I've flipped my kayak 2times since I've owned it. But not out deep. It's not fun. I'm glad you are ok. Rods and reels are replaceable, you're not. Stay safe my friend.
Thank you! Yeah, the heart break of losing that gear is real, but in the end, it’s just some money. I hope sharing this experience in some way helps someone else 😊
I’m glad you’re safe! But man…this was so hard to watch! 😢
Haha thanks ❤️. No worries, I’ll get new poles and still bring fish to dart league 😂😂
Glad you recovered safely. Gear is expendable.
Gear expandable, lives are not! Thanks for always being a great fishing partner!
Im glad you ended up coming home safe. That is definitely the the most important thing. I flipped my tandem with my father as well and we didn't tether anything back then either. We went 90% bankrupt. all but one pole managed to stay in the holder during the flip. Thank you for your video and the humbling experience you shared.
one more thing. just like you mentioned at the end of your video, pumping water with the hatch open is risky. one wave would swamp a kayak. we installed a 500gph rule bilge pump and split the battery power that was used for the fish finder. we could pump water without having to open the hatch and risk getting hit by a wave. It saved us on more than one occasion when the winds kicked up and water was collecting in the hull. Just some food for thought. You can never have too many safety measures in place when out on the water. Hope to see more videos with you and your new gear soon!
Wonderful comments and recommendations! I was truly hoping that good things and information come and can be shared for all by sharing this experience. Thank you for sharing your experience with me and your remedies! ❤️
Thanks for sharing the experience. I'm still waiting for my ama before I head too far off shore. I also filled part of my hull with 2 pound / sq ft. expanding foam just to prevent full on sinking. No matter how comfortable you are in the water, it never feels good floating around off shore. Good to see you keep a cool head and deal with it.
Safe fishing/kayaking my friend. Don’t forget, the amas are not foolproof. Those arms can still snap with too much pressure so still try to stay within your hull. I use amas on my outback in the big island. Never thought I needed it on the PA, until I needed it 😂
Dang, sorry about loosing your gear that’s scary
Thanks bro. Stuff is replaceable, main thing is safety!
Dang my dude I had know Idea this happened. Im just glad you're ok bro.
Thats not good mate, Im glad you are safe though. In NZ we strap all our gear down, and have rod leashes and paddle leashes. Kia kaha bro
Many of us do that here too. In the worst, i actually have tethers and don’t use them because I find it cumbersome when I switch my poles around as often as I do. Wishing I had them in this day 😂
Losing your gear sucks but it's a good thing you are ok.
Glad you’re ok Braddah do you think if you had outrigger’s on it would of kept you from flipping
Sucks man. I know the feeling. Happen to me as well. Tie everything down, you get used to it after while. Its better to have the pump on the outside just secure it. If the pump is on the inside it could get lost in haul especially if it’s filled with water. 🤙🏽
Great tips! Thanks for the insight!!! I get so frustrated moving things around when the poles are all tethered, but in hindsight, all that hassle beats losing all that gear 🤷🏻♂️
For me, I’d keep one in my tub which is in the hatch, not necessarily just rolling around in the entire hull. One difference between a PA and say an outback or compass etc.
@@wheres_d_ahi Equipment tethers and leashes can be very dangerous because you'll get tangled when you huli. Better to lose the gear than your life. One leash connecting your ankle to the kayak will keep you from getting separated from the kayak. Assume that you might have to cut yourself free from entangling leashes and tethers. Once, a friend and I were caught in a very sudden and extreme increase in the wind. My friend raised his paddle to signal me (even shouting couldn't be heard over the wind), causing a huli. He wasn't tethered to the kayak and it blew away, rolling across the water like a log. When I reached him, I saw that fishing line from a rod still attached to his kayak was sliding quickly across his neck and I cut it before a large hook impaled him. A boat chased his kayak down and he clung to my kayak until another boat came to rescue him. He wasn't wearing his PFD, which was rolled up and attached to the kayak with a bungee cord. Later, he confessed that his takeaway lesson from that experience was that he should learn to swim!
@@shermwarner3485 holy crap that is an action filled and terrifying story! I’m glad to hear the two of you came out alive after such a catastrophic ordeal. Great insight about the fears of tethers equipment tethers and the importance of one from yourself to your yak. Thanks for the comment!
Praise the lord, you are safe
Thank you!
Do you have outriggers yet?
I use them on my kayak in the big island, but I still don’t use the side amas on my kayaks here. Really this was a freak occurrence that happened mostly because I was taking on water and the kayak was lopsided from the water weight on one side within the hull.
Curious if you tether your gear now?
I did tether everything for a while after this happened. Currently I only tether when it is a bit rough. Having the poles tethered can be a reel pain and distraction when switching pole sides or when fighting a fish, and it can actually be quite dangerous when you actually flip as you could get wrapped in them too. I tend to keep and poles not currently in use tethered when they are in the back upright rod holders.
@@wheres_d_ahi yeah I agree
