The year I started my apprenticeship at BREL Doncaster Plant Works, following my Dad into what I thought was going to be a job for life. What a sad sight to see when we were shown the scrap road. From what I heard people were over all them taking what they could such as pistons to cut off the crowns to make ash trays etc. I remember hoping someone could buy what they could to keep them from the scrap man and the determined collector.

It would be good fun to help out the scrapping though. Just go in the cab and smash up everything with a sledgehammer!
