I felt the same way about the 1987 (85 -77) Minnesota Twins. Coming in, They beat the HEAVILY favored Detroit Tigers, who finished with an MLB best 98-64. I was just as shocked about this series as I was with the aforementioned ALCS. Like the Twins against the Tigers, the Pistons manhandled the Lakers in 5 games. Looking back 35 years later, players like Kirby Puckett, Bert Blyleven, Frank Viola, Gary Gietti, Kent Hrbek, Jeff Reardon, Dan Gladden, among others were a pretty darn good team!
I live in Warren Michigan(one mile away from Detroit),and man,I remember this just like it was yesterday. People in the neighborhood were going nuts! Shooting off fireworks, getting drunk, partying,it was so awesome. Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said about the 2005 Finals against those damn Spurs!!! R.I.P. Stuart Scott
@@MORTIFERO751 no larry brown didn't utilize his bench firstly to start the game for example start Carlos Delfino and Arroyo which was back healthy run Richard Hamilton with Wallace x2 in the front court in a 3 guard lineup to run with the Spurs then run Chauncey in the defensive side because he scores mostly off of turnovers anyway and Tayshawn for Rip to give him breathers between running with Manu through so many possessions and giving Carlos Delfino a rest with Antonio McDyess which Delfino should be resting with 15 points in the first half. Then in the second half start your original starters with one bench player who has the hot hand which would be Delfino. Detroit would've repeated having them be the new bad boys! Detroit's bench should have started the first half to counter against the Spurs run attack offense which is why they outscored them and won the finals.
the opposite of superteam but equally as great as a superteam...others look for their superstar when game is on the line but they look to each other to win game.. amazing
shame how okur became a stud in utah...wish he stayed in Detroit...mike james as well...smdh...kept bums like milotic ham campbell but not these 2 studs
Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings completely dominated the whole area during 2000's. The Pistons made the Conference Finals from 2003-2008. Eastern Conference Champions in 2004 and 2005. NBA Champions in 2004. Meanwhile the Red Wings made the Conference Finals in 2002, 2007-2009. Western Conference Champions in 2002, 2008 and 2009. Won the Stanley Cup in 2002 and 2008. Damn! See how much exposed Detroit in NBA and NHL during 2000's.
Asmosis Jones and yet they beat the early 2000s lakers in the finals they are the only team to do that. That's not overrated if anything they are underrated
@@razkable The bench became a trainwreck in later years because they made some stupid decisions. However, this team had the NBA's 6th man of the year in Corliss Williamson, along with Mehmet Okur, Mike James and Lindsay Hunter. They lost three of the four, including Okur, who promptly became an All Star for Utah. If they keep him instead of Darko, they probably win at least one more championship.
Fast forward 15 years and everyone says Pistons were lucky, Lakers feuding, Lakers were old anyway, etc... I don't wanna hear it! This was statistically the greatest defensive team ever assembled. I bought season tickets in 04 (without the budget for it at the time) because I knew no one had a chance and I wanted to be there for the afterparty.
+Nathan Lawson I mean this is the only championship the Pistons won in 5 ECF appearances. That's the definition of a fluke team. As a Spurs fan I'm glad we proved this trash team was a fluke in 2005 Finals hahahah
I am a die hard old school Bad Boys Pistons fan. I watched these 2004 Pistons and they were a very different team from the late 80/early 90's Pistons. But they were dominant in their own way and they made Kobe and Shaq look like imposters. These Pistons should gone further than a one and done.
Well, ONE thing that the _2004 Detroit Pistons_ had in common with the _1988-'89 thru 1990-'91 BAD BOYS Detroit Pistons_ was that they both boasted being _THE TOUGHEST DEFENSIVE TEAMS_ of their respective eras ... and _(also)_ BOTH teams were dominant without being a 'superteam', and without having a superstar on those championship teams.
Yeah I would say so. Everyone wants to say the 2016 Cavs but that squad had 3 of the top 5 players in the NBA. The Pistons did not have a Superstar and beat a squad with 3 of the top 50 players of all-time and the 2nd best SG of all-time.
@@frankwilliamson4576 nah the 2011 mavs. They swept the 2 time defending champs, rammed through the OKC thunder with Durant , Westbrook and harden, and embarrassed the big 3 Miami Heat super team. All with 1 all star on their team
Don't feel bad I was 13 back in 1989 when they won their 1st championship. Give it time Stan ( the man ) Van Gundy has a few tricks up his sleve and we will be champions again.
PurpleScoutCookies man I was 11 and I enjoyed the hell out of it!!!! WE partied in my neighborhood all night long!!!! On The West Side of Detroit AMERICAN AND JOY RD man we had a ball!!! I was only 11 I remember so well.
I remember telling my brother in law that Detroit was going to win Half way thrue the season. Every game the pistons won I would call and fucking talk shit He would just hang up in anger, he was a lil bitch still is. DETROIT BASKETBALL. I would be running street ball out there smashing, screaming DETROIT BASKETBALL dudes hating. RIP MAMBA.
If only Larry Brown wouldn't have Larry Brown'd himself and stayed. This team wins at minimum 1 more championship, but probably at least 2 more. They kept going to the ECF, but Flip Saunders (RIP) just wasn't the right fit.
Detroit definitely earned this championship but it's sad how the Lakers went out😢 this was literally their last chance win another title. They came up short and got out played in the end.
then you didnt pay enough attention to the pistons that year...clearly...once they got rasheed they were legit ...la had so many issues and it came out in the finals...the pistons took care of the past 2 east champ nets and best team 60 win indy..they were tested..they didn't sleepwalk like the past 5 east teams did to the finals..they earned it
I wish there was a interview of that scum Gary Payton since he ran his mouth in the off season that year. Must’ve been embarrassing for him to get owned like that.
I used to be sad about the pistons winning this series, but looking back on it now I can truly appreciate how special and deserving this team was.
Same here

if the pistons 1st two NBA titles have won on the road was nice this one is special because this is the 1st time the pistons won the NBA title at home

Thanks for the Upload! I hope NBA 2K announce the 03-04 Detroit Pistons as a Classic Team in NBA 2K16 Next Week! It will be Epic!
Wow they did!

Larry Brown got his 1st title after 21 years, wow. Too bad A.I couldn't go with him.
Holy shit Mariano Rivera had 27 saves by June 15th!?
Man, the Pistons really picked up the garbage in that game and they took out the trash!
i Definitely knew the pistons would win!!!!!! Im from detroit and knew it, since we were battling with the nets
The old intro will never be topped

I remember this. Just got home from basic training and tech school.
Kobe's selfishness sealed that team's fate

I was too young to appreciate the Bad Boys era, but I was so thankful that the 2004 championship happened while I was in college.
This is similar how the spurs beat the heat in 2014
how is this similar? lol
u means Mavs beat the Heat in 2011
No the Spurs were obviously the better team
This 04 series was the biggest upset in NBA history
More like Nowitzki and the Mavs who were predicted to get blown out of the water against LeBron, Bosh, and Wade.
I didn't know Legler played basketball before wow respect him even more

Asmosis Jones he says Billups deserved it he was the glue that held them together
They would of had one in O5 if it wasn't for lucky shot horry

Ben Wallace should of been mvp
Losing memo big nasty and Mike James was huge losses I really wish they have ran back the same team might have been different vs the spurs

The 04 Pistons were way better than the 2011 Mavs. Dallas had Dirk, but Detroit had more depth from top to bottom
