Probably single action, direct drive reels 1:1 ratio. Handle on side of spool, no casting. Nickname knuckle busters, when fish runs and you lose your grip.

Doh! That's what they're really called, isn't it? I read center pin and thought some Great Lakes steelhead angler was confused. I guess I was confused. I have a couple old metal reels from the 1940's or 50's that are so heavy, I only use them for homemade downriggers.
