Kiribati used to consist of 16 Islands in an Atoll chain. We are located in the four hemispheres of the world that is the Equator runs through Kiriabati and the International date line runs through Kiribati as well. After World war 2, The Americans and the British decided to hand over the remaining Islands over to the east. That was the Tarawa Treaty. The Island that China wanted was one of those Islands that were gifted to Kiribati by USA and Brittan. If Kiribati had chosen to lease it to China, the USA would have stepped in. In the old days, Canton Island was a stop over for Pan American Airlines when they are enroute from Mainland USA to Australia or New Zealand.
