Wytse, this is amongst the most interesting videos from you!
After more than 25 years in professional mastering and disk-cutting, after jumping into plug-in production together with TDR crew for making a virtual cutting lathe plugin, after a life of set-up and maintenance of cutting rooms and re-fining workflows, and then videos for explaining the product....
and a similar January as you describe yours...I feel what you are talking about.
I have experienced similar shifts several times in my career ("life" if you wish)
I hope you will make more videos - even at a slower pace maybe - because they are super valuable.
Especially for those who are down to earth, passionate, no nonsense and straightforward.
And off course if you want to do something about disk-mastering for vinyl in 2024 I am totally up for it!
    Best wishes from Berlin, Helmut.

    Thanks for being so open.
I kind of like all your videos...because of your honesty and knowledge. I always learn things from you...that could be mixing, analogue gear, plugins etc.
My absolute favourite thing you have done was the 7 hour video of the end to end mix project....just watching how someone else approaches day to day mix challenges is really valuable and I learned so much that will make my mixing better.
So...just keep doing you, and keep sharing knowledge and how you approach things

You’re definitely one of my favourite as you called them audio tubers out there, your content is top notch and it’s a breather that this isn’t a “I’m quitting RUclips” kind of video❤. As for what I’d like to see on your channel is your take on recording and the whole kind of workflow you use when people come to your live room up until you start to mix their music it’s something I’m looking for optimising myself and seeing your philosophy on this subject would sure help me make adjustments to my own workflow. Take care man we are all here for you

I love your videos - the content, the knowledge, and the honesty. What I would love to see is not so much a comparison between hardware and plugins (which is generally seen as no comparison) but something more instructional, such as how to use various plugins based on your knowledge of hardware, what types of decisions you would make. So, things like when would you use a parametric EQ, what types of compressors to use in various situations and what parameters would you apply and why - using a variety of known plugins. Things of that nature. Not to show how hardware is better, but for those of us without access to hardware to at least practice and learn with available plugins. Not to pretend that we can create the ultimate sound but just to get better. I'm seeing a few folks that I follow switching to this type of approach. I've found those videos very interesting and helpful. For instance I saw one not too long ago by someone on how and when to use a Fairchild compressor. It was short and simple and gave me a wealth of ideas to work from, but it wasn't tied to any particular endorsement of a plugin. Basically, it was about: just grab your favourite Fairchild plugin and learn how to use it. The same could be done with Opto, FET, Vari-Mu, etc. Different EQs. Sorry for the long suggestion, but I think you could bring a wealth of knowledge to that space.

Edit: Actually, most of your plugin review vids actually really helped me a lot when choosing or buying plugins/tools! And when I do decide on buying that plugin, I don't regret! They're not collecting dust. They're permanently part of my templates and wokflows! So yah, just letting you know how much your insights are helpful.

Thank you for the openness about what is going on behind the scenes. Hope you'll be able to keep a healthy work/life balance because I'm not bored of your video content yet 😉. As for branching out to other styles of video's I'd love to see more actual recording and mixing video's. Let as be a fly in the room during the creative and engineering proces, see how you make choices and why. Also I feel there are forms where sponsored content is fine. You could strike a deal with a microphone manufacture and do a recording session with those mic's I don't see any downside to that style of sponsorship. But I respect your hesitation on this matter.

FWIW: I very much liked your videos about wiring up your studio, installing your patch bays, exploring the possibilities with repaired console parts, etc. So in general: the real studio stuff. Another very interesting video was your coöperation with your friend the mastering engineer. I have to agree, I am pretty sure that a month of easy videos would be really easy to get along with as a viewer. I have been on a 'gear tube' diet lately, and this channel + Bad Gear are about it. I am a bit tired of how youtube is expecting folks to kill themselves running a channel non-stop. For craps sake, broadcast and streaming folks has 'seasons' with some space between them. Even news folks get vacations and sick days.

People don't realize the commitment it takes to keeps a RUclips channel alive an how time consuming it is... that said, personally, RUclips changed my life for the better, so I think it is worth it! But the challenge is there... A very "humbling" thing that I realized recently (after 10 years of doing this!) is that most of the time, the simplest content, that takes minimal time and effort to produce, is the most appreciated. Keep it real and simple. Thanks a lot for your content, it is always very inspiring!

  • @SantoMachismo

Thanks a lot for your great great content! I really appreciate your hands on approach and your originality.
One suggestion (I don't know if it makes sense for a RUclipsr): When you won't be able to upload fresh material, maybe start reuploading "classic" content, so videos that are already out there, but which you choose to show your audience again for xyz reason. Maybe with a little intro to let everybody know why you pulled that up again.
So it's not just rechewing old stuff but like a curated selection of still relevant info ✌️

  • @bobdeadbeef

Influenza has always been underestimated. Good luck on your continued recovery! Your plugin videos are the most relevant to me, but if you want to pivot, walking us through the process of recording/mixing would be a good direction. That may seem overcrowded, but I think there's lots of unexplored territory. Copyright is an issue; you'd need an artist/label on board with it. Break it up into a series, from project inception to final product, timed to build toward release. Artist gets help with hype, you get content, audience wins! The best part, but also a problem-it is its own buffer, but you need content in the meantime.

Perhaps taking a page out of Beato's "What Makes This Song Great"? But instead you can do: "What Makes This Mix Great?" I'd LOVE to hear your analysis on great recordings from all the ages based on whatever technology was used for its time. I.E. "Pet Sounds" is still considered mandatory for many engineers considering what was accomplished at the time. There's tons of great recordings that could use such a spotlight. Even going back to the earliest recording of 78's! Whatever you do, I'll be watching. ✌

@@LanewoodStudiosBeato was successful because he used the education disclaimer. And they were not monetized. He used that traffic to sell a lot of his publications and other stuff.
Same can be done here. And don’t forget, there’s also the interview angle which is really taking off lately for him. He’s doing some really important work right now with legends who probably won’t be around much longer. There’s plenty of recording engineers who are also in that same zone. They’d probably love to be interviewed by a fellow engineer with deeper questions than most ordinary journalist are capable of.

@@houdinididiit yes it would be absolutely great and I really like Rick Beato’s content. He even has some audio engineering content. I was just saying that if Wytse goes that way he needs to realize he’s going to lose the Adsense revenue from the videos. Plugin reviews will remain VERY important for newbies, I myself have enjoyed your uploads a lot, it prevented a lot of rubbish plugins being bought by me. However, you can probably publish video's in separate subject content. I would really enjoy your input on (semi)pro (re)mastering. Because many bedroom artists insist on mixing themselves. My advantage is my excellent hearing (yes, my ears, i am blessed), therefore many clients reach out to me because they want to get their stereo mixes from good to great. As you have an excellent mastering studio cube in your videos, i think many subscribers like me do want your expert know how. And please, keep your approach as down to earth - we LOVE that. Keep on indeed😊❤

Would love to see live mixing/mastering of a organic house track in the future. I‘m still struggling to find a way to mix them since the bass plays such an important role. My stuff always seems to have too much bass, but when turning it down it loses soul.

      @charlesbonkley 4 месяца назад +1

If you think the bass is the most important element, then make it the most important element! Nothing wrong with that!
Just cut reduce the sub-bass boominess (headroom-eater) and retain more of the harmonics/character.

Use the -1db trick.and see if it works for U.... When you reach the exact point that you feel the bass sounds perfect in your mix, turn it down -1 db and forget about it... The next day you will hear it is in a good place....

    • @rited

impossible to tell without hearing, but its possibly a midrange issue. mids are often the hardest thing to get right, but incredibly important in a great mixdown. Often people mask poorly balanced mids by overemphasising the bass, which is an easy way to give physicality to a track. But the energy of the track shouldnt completely disappear when muting the bass. When the mids are rich, the bass doesnt need to be super loud to have the desired effect. Take Kerri Chandler's mixdowns for example.

Whatever you're inspired by and truly excited about sharing is what's best to serve up. Enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm, and more than anything that's how I like to be affected - no matter what it is I'm learning about. Now that is REAL enthusiasm and not PRETENTIOUS. Knowledge is easy to digest if it's cared about how it is delivered. I recently shared this analogy with a friend ... a person took the choicest cut of beef, boiled it, burnt it, then served it up dry, lukewarm in monotone ... bland, boring and such a waste! The next person knew how to properly cook the same cut, lovingly prepared it, perfectly cooked and seasoned it, served it hot and fresh with some interesting sides - the difference is they knew what they were doing, loved what they were doing, and wanted to share that passion with their guests. If I asked my guests what they wanted but I didn't know how to cook it, then I might end up underwhelming them. Fair to say there is always a balance, but whatever it is you do, do it because you love it. You'll have far more satisfaction in that, than any $ you make.

Cool. Keep it up…I can imagine it’s exhausting but your content is great and genuine. Things I wanna see. One topic is using outboard gear as hardware inserts in pro tools to make it very easy to integrate for mixing…and also have them patched/normalled for recording going in as well. For plugins maybe consider demoing or reviewing a few plugins in one video…from one company so that people can get a flavor of their products and also maybe companies that go overlooked like…OVERLOUD, PSP, McDSP. Also I always find that the most cutting edge and creative stuff is in the Synth plugin world with companies like UVI…but that’s more composing/production/sound design, than mixing. Otherwise like I said I’m always interested in making a seemless workflow with analog gear and plugins in Pro Tools…for me…or in any DAW. Just conceptually. Some ideas. Keep it up!

i think tom announced he was stopping a long time ago, before the quitting trend started to occur.
ads in your video are not annoying. i love when you advertise because i know you're getting paid. which feels good to me and probably for you too.
i don't get bored with plug-in reviews and snake oil stuff. i love that stuff. the only thing i don't like is the lack diving in very deeply into these plugins. it would be cool if you took a look at the manual or help files to discover unique features and actually show us a bit more about the plug-in. but i know that's not quite your style and i respect that- you can literally do whatever you want and you have my support. 🎉

I don't really know about how youtube works, but whatever you are doing your videos keep popping up on my feed even though I wasn't subscribed. I am now, hope it helps a bit. I always kinda thought it was just a hobby for most youtubers, doing this on the side for fun and of course advertising their studio in the process too. One of my favorite channels is Dan Worrall and he just uploads whenever. He has plenty of subscribers too (you win though), but he probably isn't dependent on it for income. On the other hand I also stumbled upon a nice little channel called Audio Mountain where the guy brings out all kinds of nice tutorials on a regular basis, but he barely has any subscribers. The algorithm just works in a really weird way I guess.

You are awesome, and I love your videos. You have helped me make more practical decisions on what is necessary to make music, for me. It would be cool to see you record a band or do something outside of the studio, or work with other youTubers/sound people. The world is an oyster, or a giant turtle, best wishes.

Thank you for your openness. Really appreciate your content. See the point with plugin reviews. Maybe shoot a video how to about how to review and judge for yourself? Like how to identify snake oil…:)
I would be interested in some „RL“ content. Like „i‘m currently working on THIS and this is my process, these are the problems im facing, these are my solutions - or maybe i dont really have one yet?!“
I think in the end you‘re not that limited to subjects. Although you manage to make very informative videos i f.e. enjoyed this one a lot because it makes it possible to kind of … connect to your way of approaching or thinking about things..? So maybe if you‘d focus a bit more on yourself and your process with the things you do your content will be as valuableas before but a bit less stressful for you to make?
And hey… you gave your share! Even if you‘d decide to quit yt tomorrow you will be remembered for what you did and if you‘d be happier that way … go for it. Can only imagine how stressful that is.
    Rave on 🤘

Snake oil videos are nice and all, at least we get honest opinions on certain "prodigious" new plugins, but for me what made the difference was your talk with a mastering engineer. I'm not really a fan of those 40' interviews with guests but that one was really well packed. Alongside with that, everything explaining some actual mixing criteria based on skills rather than tools is what I enjoy the most, but I understand that due to its value it's more of a paid content.

Sounds like you have some good ideas for branching out. We'll look forward to that. Regarding toxic clients: At my studio I'm running a backup like every 5 minutes so I can hand over a thumb drive and say "Here's your data. It includes everything we've done so far. Good luck with your project. I'll Venmo what's left of your deposit right now. Please be mindful of my dogs on your way out."

Just be you man, and yes do talk about different things rather than plugin reviews, as you said a lot of companies just re-creating what is already there (as plugins) that for me is boring. Unless a plugin that is really worthwhile reviewing that is outside the box, then that would be cool. In regards to reviews, what about just focusing on hardware? that is always interesting. Other than that, workflow, ergonomics, philosophies is definitely more interesting and beneficial. If you do what makes you excited and happy that will definitely reflect and show on your channel, personally that would be more engaging for me. There are too many channels on selling shit, and to ve fair Im completely over that. Keep on doing what you love to do man. Peace & luv

Just real quick if you read these bud, ..the plugin videos should only be done if there is a good plugin because it's like some one is spamming eq curves , sat and multiband compression on the internet . You do not have to talk about every pop up that comes to the browser if you catch my drift. I am very interested in hardware and studio setups, leaning the mixing basics and so on. I will be building a sound room soon, so if you did videos like that , it would be really cool. Not only build, but explain why every element is important in the room. Talk more about hardware and speakers some mixing tutorials would be cool and if a good plugin comes out then its worth a look. Do what feels right and try not to work yourself into a frenzy . Take care of yourself man and thanks for sharing your wisdom. This channel is one of the only channels I can take seriously and it has done a lot to help me get started so thanks for everything - cheers from Canada
