- The California is the most popular camper van ever and this is the VW California XXL prototype! With its systematically thought-out interior and an absolutely unmistakable design, the Bulli - with its pop-up roof - became an icon for motoring globetrotters and camping enthusiasts. Now Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has the taken the legendary concept of the California and applied it to the next size up in camper vans, refined it further and come up with the California XXL Concept. It is based on the new Crafter, which is among the most modern all-round transporters in the world, with its comfortable and safe handling, efficient engines and a wealth of driver assistance systems. This film has no commentary but none is necessary. It will show you some of the internal details of this very interesting concept which unfortunately was cancelled at the prototype level! However, in its place came the VW Grand California and you can see that in other videos on this channel!

Richard, I posted films on the night lights and seems it can be closed but using a switch. I filmed a plastic from a company called Polyplastic last September which may be worth looking at as this dims the inside of the van like curtains almost!
They should use solar energy and battery to run all electrical equipments cooking, freeze , heating lighting etc.(no LPG at all)
How big do you think a battery is going to have to be to heat a van?
For some reason cannot understand which part of the toilet is sliding out and couldn't really understand the design of the washroom/bathroom. Was too zoomed in or ambiguous vaguely shown. Literally watched it atleast 5-7 times trying to understand the design of the loo room.
I would like to do a better job for you but as this vehicle will never get built, I won't be able to. There was only one prototype model and this was it!

That’s nice! I hope they put it out in the US. It would sell. Solar windows in the roof, there should be an automotive product on the market in the near future, maybe that’s part of their plan. The technology seems almost there.
VW could quickly establish a strong position in the van camper category against Thor/Airstream with products like this.
This is the first one I’ve seen where I said, yeah. . . I could live and travel in that on a several month, go pretty much anywhere voyage.

The technical gadgets are good. But too white and the glass roof is madness.
So did you like it up close? I mean lots of potential wow moments like the coffee machine, the projector and the two fridges(!) (although that would be a big no no for a certain Mr A Heath n''est pas? ) it looks VERY grey, I know grey is in vogue at the mo, but as sure as eggs is eggs what's in fashion now, will be very passé in the future. I'm guessing price wise , should it reach production as is, north of 90k?
I think it is great. Not for me as I suspect it may not be practical for my use but for many it would be just the job. I would not like to speculate on price but would suggest that your idea might be the price of a used one - in bad condition!

Very nice, but for the price, space, durability and residual value I would rather go for an Airstream RV, towed by an VW Atlas.

Europe has the BEST RV/motorhome designs. American RVs are outdated and stale. I'd convert a short school bus before I bought an American made RV - especially for the money.

This van was a prototype and VW decided not to go ahead with it. However it did produce the Grand California instead.

Martin you can do this in the search engine. There is a place for geography - although some of the stuff I film is available in the US. This van is not available anywhere yet.

Nice inside, ugly outside and will no longer fit in many car parks or parking bays, unlike the 'old' California.
All VW fantasy because they don’t plan to build it. None of the car companies want to commit to a “camper” vehicles because Millennials are to fascinated by fast cars. Keep hoping. Nissan is building a Westfalia style camper van from a smaller SUV but I’d doesn’t compare to the bay window campers, 68-79.
I have it from a very reliable source within the company that it is likely to be built - although maybe not in this same form!
