Iron Maiden are the philosophers of metal music. They are "art metal" if you will. They use legends, history, etc as the foundation ideas for their songs. Most of their songs have fairly deep lyrical meanings.

Thank you for the reaction, as always. Love these. I usually try to suggest a few songs that are maybe a bit more obscure to the "reacting community", but I would actually love to see your reaction to both JinJer - Pisces and Gojira - Flying Whales. I know they are both a bit "played out" among the reaction folk, but they are both FANTASTIC songs that hove a real flavor all their own. I am a metal head of nearly 40 years now, and hearing Gojira for the first time was honestly like hearing Master of Puppets for the first time back in '86. A special band to be sure. As for JinJer, well... the vocals are something to experience. Great energy.
Again, thanks for all you do. Great channel. I feel as though it would be great fun just to hang with you both and talk music and life. If you are ever in the Chicagoland area...

In 86 or 87 I was at an Anthrax gig in London...and next to me was Steve Harris...What a night!! Maiden has been with me in one way or another since the beginning.

If you're doing back to back songs, try doing Rainbow's 'Stargazer' and 'A light in the black' like that, as they are two parts of the same story. Also... Dio's vocals.

We're not showing her the Live After Death version of this song? Nothing beats that version of Phantom of the Opera. The solo feels so much more controlled live. The studio version is all over the place.

I enjoy these reaction videos. This is the first time I’ve ever commented on any reaction video or the DiAnno Vs Dickinson debate.
I’ve been a fan of this genre of music since 1979. I’ve collected thousands of songs in my collection and seen many concerts.
I consider this version of this song to be the greatest song ever recorded.
It’s easy and obvious to say that back when this song came out, there was nothing like it before - it was groundbreaking. I remember describing the song over the phone to my cousin after I first heard it. What I said some 38 years ago was that ‘... they could have chopped up this song and made four or five songs out of it...’ . It was my badge of honor for those who laughed at the art form I loved for lacking skill. It’s still the greatest song, years later.
“Prowler”, “Remember Tomorrow”, “Transylvania” ... to have these other songs on this album as well ... every other song on the album could have consisted of Yoko Ono singing a-capella - this is additionally the greatest studio album ever recorded. That raw, punk edge mixed with tempo changes and intricate riffs ... I only place “Unleashed In The East” above the debut Iron Maiden album.
The only problem for me was that this album set the bar at an impossibly high level.
The second album was very good. Then, Bruce comes in for the 3rd album. In addition to Bruce having a completely different style, the punk-like raw edge began to fade. It was a great album with some great songs - but it was not the same thing as the first album. Clearly, you can’t break ground twice. The ‘next’ groundbreaking album in the genre after the first Maiden LP was “Kill ‘Em All”, and that also changed my expectations of the genre. Ironically, I was at Metallica’s first show in NY in Staten Island and Steve Harris was there to see his friend Adrian Vandenberg as the headliner. Harris spoke to our group who was there at the show. We were there to see Metallica who were all the buzz in the underground. I had not yet been savvy enough to get their demo tape. It was to be Dave Mustaine’s next to last show with Metallica, but meant nothing to me at the time, obviously.
So, here I am, standing next to the founding member of my favorite band as we all watched the stage and saw what would soon become my next favorite band in the world (... for a short time ...) - it was surreal!
Metallica broke ground, but Maiden was developing a sound that further distanced it from the first album.
DiAnno Vs Bruce ... There’s obviously a bias for me because of the epic and groundbreaking nature of the debut album. If a singing coach asked each singer to sing a-cappella, I’d venture to guess that Bruce might be though to have the superior voice ...
    ... however ...
... not only was Maiden’s sound further distancing itself from the first album, whatever sound they had ... the way the songs are put together ... the best way to say it is that a singer should add an overall tone that blends in with the tone that the band is playing and Bruce does not do that most of the time - and that is the reason I prefer DiAnno.
Bruce is a fantastic ambassador for the art form in his off-stage accomplishments. He gives “us” credibility. Songs like “Hallowed Be Thy Name”, “Number of the Beast”, “Run to the Hills”, “Aces High” - great stuff - what’s not to love?
... but comparing it all to this song ... there can only be one “greatest song ever”, and this one is it

It sounds like you also prefer a more punk influence edge to your music, is that fair to say? Since I was born later I experienced it backwards a bit, but I certainly agree they were groundbreaking ✊🤘

Thanks for the reply. What you and HLS do here is bring attention to a fantastic sub-genre of music in a natural way. It allows those of us who remember our own first reaction to some of these legendary songs to recollect. Keep it going!
I guess one might conclude that I’m more into punk than metal based on my feedback above, that’s not the case. It seems that the Maiden sound evolved with their continued success partially because they had more financial resources pumped into their subsequent releases due to increased support from the record company. Also, over the years, their targeted signature guitar tone changed. I think of two songs comparatively: ‘Prowler’ and, years later, ‘Aces High’: When that first guitar riff on the respective album openers are heard, that immediately establishes an expectation of what’s to follow. At this point, it then becomes a point of personal preference.
Many of the bands that I love are ones where I had that first reaction moment to on their debut album. One band that falls under the category of ‘...didn’t fully immerse myself into them until later in life, after their golden years ...’ is the woefully under appreciated U.F.O. whom, ironically, were major influences to Maiden. Some of their classics were prevalent as DJs played them in clubs between bands, but listening with focus as you do here gravitated me to the guitar work of Schenker and the vocal tone of Phil Moog. Moog and DiAnno are in a similar class style-wise. It wasn’t until I increasingly immersed myself into Schenker’s work with UFO that I valued other guitar characteristics over quantitative characteristics like playing fast. His tone (going back to that again) is distinctive (like a Brian May, Carlos Santana or Randy Rhodes), but there’s an emotion that came out which took me several songs to appreciate his style, consistency and longevity.
Thanks for allowing this tiny section of cyberspace for me to go back in time and reflect on my first reactions and subsequent support of bands who were going through their “debut to stardom” phases. Keep the spirit that you show, which is reflective in the music of the genre.

My best suggestions for the next Maiden songs:
22 Acaica Avenue - really intricate rythmic formula, one of their best groovy songs.
Hallowed be thy name - 'cause simply one of their best.
To tame a land - 'cause it's an unknown fantastic song.
The duellist - 'cause it is one of their best undervalued song.
Alexander the great - one of their giant songs.
Seventh son of a seventh son - one of their ohter giant songs, with the best solo at the end.

The problem with that is you need to listen to the whole album for Seventh Son... That would have to be some kind of special event. Which I'd be down for, to be honest.

Ahhhhh... the classic! I remember being absolutely mesmerized by this song when I first started listening to metal. It was unlike any music I have heard before (well, except maybe Pink Floyd my father used to play when I was a kid).
Also, I cannot help myself - one trying to learn early Maiden stuff cannot avoid "Purgatory" for long. It's an absolute masterpiece, both as a song and as a proof of Di'Anno's vocal abilities.

Great review/reaction! I've been a Maiden fan since 1981 when I saw them on their Killers Tour. I was BLOWN AWAY at the age of 14. So glad I got to see Paul and Clive with the early band. I also saw them in 1982, 1983, 1987, 1998, and 2000... and I've got tickets to see them next year. Up the Irons, mates!
