I'm from Belgium - Europe and we have three OFFICIAL recognised native languages in our little Kingdom : Dutch, French and German. Our government workers and officials understand all three languages throughout the country. If you live and work on Hawaii it would be ABSOLUTELY a requirement for government officials to understand and spoke the English but also the Hawaiian language, and in my personal opinion this would be also valid for this judge.
The Hawaiian constitution art15-sec4 states that both languages, English and Hawaiian are both the official languages of Hawaii. But the Hawaiian language can only be used for public acts as it is required by law??? Is this a joke, must be.

The culture of a people is contained in the language. To deprive them of their language is to deprive them of the wisdom of their culture. The judge who would not have a Hawaiian court reporter was blackmailing the Hawaiian speakers and using her pulpit to bully them into using English.
If she does not understand the ambient language, she should provide herself with a translater and not require persons involved in adversarial actions to explain them to her, since she will then be at the mercy of the persons who translate.

The argument used by Mr. Kanuha, i.e., English and Hawaiian both being "official" languages of the State of Hawaii, can be used AGAINST him, just as he tried to use it against others. If a judge cannot force English on him, then he cannot force Hawaiian on a judge. You see, that argument cuts both ways. Note also that Mr. Kanuha, and Mr. Kaeo, had to use English to explain themselves to RUclips viewers. If they had used Hawaiian, then less than 0.0001% of viewers would even watch, let alone listen or understand. Neither Kanuha, nor Kaeo, nor anyone else, can effectively advocate for the Hawaiian language, using Hawaiian language only. In order to "save", or promote, the Hawaiian language, they need to use the English language to do so. Both Kanuha and Kaeo distorted and misrepresented the truth about the history of Hawaii and the Hawaiian language. The language declined mainly due to the voluntary decisions of most of its native speakers to NOT pass it on to their own children, because, they wanted their children to have the best chance for success in the increasingly more English-driven world. Even so, Hawaiian survived on Niihau anyway, and still does, with no help from the likes of Kanuha or Kaeo. I know Mr. Kaeo. Hawaiian is not his native language. He learned his Hawaiian by taking classes at the university.

Mr Carter, you have misconstrued my position as i am a Montanan of German extraction. I tend to speak other languages that i have encountered in a long life in many places on the globe such as Indonesian and German and Spanish and Latin. Some of the languages that we have in Montana are endangered together with the culture and wisdom that are contained within them such as Salish and Kootenai. Sometimes you fail to treasure things until they are mostly gone. However in Hawaiian you have a whole body of written culture and chants and poetry in the early news papers of the missionary era and later. The chants alone are a reason to try and study the language. It prescribes methods of address and the way people relate to each other. Refusal to use an ambient language is a mark of intellectual laziness similar to refusing to program in anything but Java. My grandmother said that you should always strive to know the ambient languages and attempt to use them in order to understand the gift of each person in your life. She, as a young girl, was once invited to tea at Washington place and meet the queen, Liliuokalani. They got along as they were both interested in music and education and she said that the great queen was one of the most beautiful women she had ever met. It changed her life for the better and we still remember all her stories that were passed down to us. I was interested in the Hawaiian language to see how they express themselves and to learn to understand their literature, as it is an eastern Polynesian language. But as a sovereign language it is as important to understand and use as Japanese is.
Your "position" consisted of the single word "Bullshit". I did not misconstrue it. Hawaii state law allows, but does not require, the use of English and/or Hawaiian in "official" matters. The relevant statute says something like *provided that Hawaiian will not be required unless so specified for a particular purpose*. (That's a paraphrase, so I used asterisks rather than quotation marks.) For example, a law might specifically require that new street names be drawn from Hawaiian language. Relevant RUclips videos show that Kanuha and Kaeo both speak English and Hawaiian, while the court judge speaks only English. Obviously, Kanuha and Kaeo do not need to use Hawaiian, especially with a court judge who doesn't understand it. They are just grandstanding and trying to get attention drawn to themselves as being some kind of activist heroes, SJWs. Probably more than 20 languages are spoken in Honolulu every day. When you have said Hawaiian state law, you have misconstrued my comment of bullshit. The State of Hawaii is a legal fiction perpetrated by the United States House and Senate, and is de facto a hostile occupying corporation in international law. It is not established by treaty, and in fact the Kue petition makes it moot. So when you say Hawaii state law you are just piling one illegality upon another. You cannot get to justice by that road. The law that should be administered in an occupied state is by international treaty the law of the land, until the state of war is resolved. The language of the Kingdom of Hawaii was Hawaiian which is why all the records that they hoped would be forgotten are in that language. It was a war crime that they punished the children of Hawaii for not using English in 1906. At least the chants have survived and are remembered, and hopefully the subjects of the kingdom will realize that they have a rich heritage and will not throw it away just because they are being strong armed by a hostile corporation with little legal standing other than its ability to project force.

I'm from Belgium - Europe and we have three OFFICIAL recognised native languages in our little Kingdom : Dutch, French and German. Our government workers and officials understand all three languages throughout the country.
If you live and work on Hawaii it would be ABSOLUTELY a requirement for government officials to understand and spoke the English but also the Hawaiian language, and in my personal opinion this would be also valid for this judge.

The argument used by Mr. Kanuha, i.e., English and Hawaiian both being "official" languages of the State of Hawaii, can be used AGAINST him, just as he tried to use it against others. If a judge cannot force English on him, then he cannot force Hawaiian on a judge. You see, that argument cuts both ways. Note also that Mr. Kanuha, and Mr. Kaeo, had to use English to explain themselves to RUclips viewers. If they had used Hawaiian, then less than 0.0001% of viewers would even watch, let alone listen or understand. Neither Kanuha, nor Kaeo, nor anyone else, can effectively advocate for the Hawaiian language, using Hawaiian language only. In order to "save", or promote, the Hawaiian language, they need to use the English language to do so. I tend to speak other languages that i have encountered in a long life in many places on the globe such as Indonesian and German and Spanish and Latin. The chants alone are a reason to try and study the language. It prescribes methods of address and the way people relate to each other. Refusal to use an ambient language is a mark of intellectual laziness similar to refusing to program in anything but Java. My grandmother said that you should always strive to know the ambient languages and attempt to use them in order to understand the gift of each person in your life. She, as a young girl, was once invited to tea at Washington place and meet the queen, Liliuokalani. They got along as they were both interested in music and education and she said that the great queen was one of the most beautiful women she had ever met. It changed her life for the better and we still remember all her stories that were passed down to us. I was interested in the Hawaiian language to see how they express themselves and to learn to understand their literature, as it is an eastern Polynesian language. But as a sovereign language it is as important to understand and use as Japanese is.
Your "position" consisted of the single word "Bullshit". I did not misconstrue it. Hawaii state law allows, but does not require, the use of English and/or Hawaiian in "official" matters. The relevant statute says something like *provided that Hawaiian will not be required unless so specified for a particular purpose*. (That's a paraphrase, so I used asterisks rather than quotation marks.) For example, a law might specifically require that new street names be drawn from Hawaiian language. Relevant RUclips videos show that Kanuha and Kaeo both speak English and Hawaiian, while the court judge speaks only English. Obviously, Kanuha and Kaeo do not need to use Hawaiian, especially with a court judge who doesn't understand it. They are just grandstanding and trying to get attention drawn to themselves as being some kind of activist heroes, SJWs. Probably more than 20 languages are spoken in Honolulu every day. Accuse me of "intellectual laziness" if you like, but I have no obligation to learn 20 or more languages.
When you have said Hawaiian state law, you have misconstrued my comment of bullshit. The State of Hawaii is a legal fiction perpetrated by the United States House and Senate, and is de facto a hostile occupying corporation in international law. It is not established by treaty, and in fact the Kue petition makes it moot. So when you say Hawaii state law you are just piling one illegality upon another. You cannot get to justice by that road. The law that should be administered in an occupied state is by international treaty the law of the land, until the state of war is resolved. The language of the Kingdom of Hawaii was Hawaiian which is why all the records that they hoped would be forgotten are in that language. It was a war crime that they punished the children of Hawaii for not using English in 1906. At least the chants have survived and are remembered, and hopefully the subjects of the kingdom will realize that they have a rich heritage and will not throw it away just because they are being strong armed by a hostile corporation with little legal standing other than its ability to project force.
