Unless you absolutely can't afford it, go for it! I waited to see if the Steam Deck wouldn't end up like the Steam machines. It didn't, so when the OLED got released, I bought my first Deck (Oled version). Just don't spend money you can't miss.
unless they changed something in immortal life, you cannot date the characters. There is a roommate system, but that's about it. (Again, unless something suddenly changed)

I have LCD steam deck and i think it is a great display. Even when comparing with switch oled. Also do not feel a need for upgrade.
