Ceramic ,ceramic or diamond plate, ceramic? I've been carrying dmt red 600grit fine credit card diamond platem it has some bumps bump for on the go. Leather wallet.
@@brunorojas3992 for me it's CC instead of DC for sure. I would say pick the DC if you find your knifes rather dull and you want it to cut again really nicely. But if you want to touch up the blade, the super fine white ceramic side gives a nice mirror polished edge that is shaving sharp. + apply some compound to the back of the sheath for quick stropping. It privides high sharpness on the go. DC has better progress and lower end sharpness. But thats just my opinion : )
I keep the 2 diamond plates off the field sharpener in the double stuff pouch. I added HDD magnets in between the 2 plates to hold them together sorta like the double stuff is but you do have to.
The guided field one has 220 and 600 diamond plates. I bought one thanks to you and Neeves, now it's absolutely my favorite knife-related thing ever, basically all you need in a cute, cost effective package. This pocket field seems interesting and fun in the way it folds, looking forward to seeing these here in Europe I gifted one of those pocket ones at 17:08 as a gift to a beginner pocket knife carrier. I like that you can hold that one to the table vertically and get a spyderco triangle-esque experience. Pretty good in my books, wish I'd gotten one for myself too, instead of/in addition to that tiny square looking one. They also have an upgraded version of it - longer and with a ceramic plate instead of a rod, but it's an exclusive collab kinda object, "mkc x work sharp knife sharpener" with 17 and 20 degrees guides, looking forward to that review as well (i know you want one😁, probably)
I find most steel discourse doesn’t distinguish between sharpening and reprofiling. With diamond stones, even the highest speed steels aren’t too hard to sharpen assuming you don’t change the edge angle. Now if you want to drop the edge angle say 3-4 degrees on Maxamet/Rex-121 that’s were the pain starts. Just an amateur’s unsolicited prospective on the matter
I have the benchmade edge maintenance pocket tool in my backpack. When traveling for work has come in handy a number of times. Yes, I could have waited a few days to get home and touch up the blade on the shapton ceramics. Though it gets the blade serviceable and gives something productive to do while in a hotel.
Interesting video, and I guess the main attribute is that it's handy. The directions and Worksharp video show it being used by holding the stone you're not using in a pistol grip, which I think would be more challenging than the method you used. I suck at hand sharpening, but have carried a EZE-LAP Diamond Knife Sharpener rod for years. It's a brass tube smaller than a Sharpie, and the rod stores inside the brass handle, and is 600 grit. It's enough to touch up and get things sharp enough. For actual sharpening, I use the Worksharp Elite Adjust Sharpener which I've had great luck with.
I have carried one of these in my pocket since the day they released it. (Well - maybe not the day, but the day I saw it as an online exclusive, I immediately purchased it.) I’ve been totally happy with it. I use mine hand-held, so the pocket clip isn’t an issue to me…
Hey Pete, Be sure to protect those Spyderco ceramic bench stones like they are precious jewels because they have been discontinued. If you get a chance to pick up spares to put away, I would take advantage of that opportunity.
I’m guessing they worth it? Would you suggest something else for the price? I was thinking about trying free hand sharpening. Don’t really wanna spend a ton right now. Currently using the work sharp precision, the first model
@@a97b18b 4x1 adapter for your Work Sharp, and some resin bonded diamond stones from CGSW. The spyderco ceramic bench stones are fine I guess, but "fine" is a really low bar when it comes to sharpening products in 2024.
I pretty much only buy portable hand sharpening stones and made a sharpening, cleaning, disassembly kit for when I'm on the go to extended family. Because the only thing that upsets me more than having a dull spot in my blade is knowing I have no way to fix it until I go back home next week or so.
I think the sharpener did honor to its name: Work Sharp. I mean it did sharpen the knives and for work they are absolutely sharp enough I would say. Anyways, I love my Fällkniven CC4 very much for travelling. It produces nice edges, is light and compact and costs around 25$ where I live.
There's probably a reason for not mentioning CC4 and DC4. I like them. They work exceptionally well in the field. Also have the Diafolds, but prefer the aforementioned stones.
I thought you might like to know that the suggested video from this (for me, who's never heard of them outside your channel) is on the Best Selling Akubra On The Market by GoldersRomaToowoomba, who I've also never heard of. Made me chuckle :)
Question! As an EDC cut anything from fertilizer bags, to wood, rope, plastic, whatever I need to cut...would you recommend the Stretch 2 K390? or Para Military 2 Magnacut?
I could see putting that worksharp stone in my pocket pouch. I would for sure glue a piece of leather on the back of it. More often than not, i just need to touch up a blade rather than put an edge back on it. It would be a great setup for whittling.
Those plastic angle guides look like they'd just get in the way more than anything else, I'd prefer an unobstructed path on and off the sharpening surface.
So I actually have an easier time sharpening K390 than 20cv. Even though k390 has more Vanadium in it than 20Cv it also has quite a bit of added cobalt to it that really makes sharpening quite easier than you would think. K390 gets wicked sharp with relative ease. I'd take it over 20cv any day.
Ditto. My K390 sharpens in a fraction of the time that it takes to work a 20CV blade. Because it sharpens so easily, it is the only knife steel that I have kept in my pocket for the last year.
Yup noticed that when i went to touch up my k390 endura4 the edge came back with relative ease yet whenever i need to bring the edge back on my s110v manix 2...i dread it cause good lord is s110v a pain in the ass to re-sharpen.
I don't mind the dulling of the blades...on cinder blocks. It's not even the scraping noises that got me. I was literally just triggered by seeing a 90° sharpening angle. Never have I ever... wtajfcf.
Speaking of K390.... Can we get a K390 Unleashed to the Max video? It has remarkable edge stability and toughness.... maybe a bevel in the 13dps flavor, either coarse or mirror polished? 10 dps with a 13 dps microbevel? Let's see if some crazy approach can beat out the dual grit from Magnacut.
I don't know why but i struggle so much with sharpening 8crv13mov, i've sharpened d2 and 9crv18mov just fine it'll shave hair but for some reason even with diamond stones and ceramic rod i struggle to sharpen 8crv13mov.
I sometimes have more difficulty sharpening those "cheaper, not so good" steels - especially if they're poorly heat treated and extra soft. Getting a good burr - and removing it if you do - becomes much more of an exercise than on a higher-quality, better, properly heat treated steel. I second the question - what knife is it that you're struggling with?
In most knives it's usually pretty soft so the burr tends to just flop back and forth. Raise a burr on diamond then look at the burr with a flashlight. Do really light burr removal passes on the diamond to weaken it more then use medium or fine ceramic and strop. Keep looking at the burr with a flashlight until it's really gone and you should be good. Hopefully:)
yes sometimes the suppose ‘super easy’ steels have different atteibutes that typical sharpening techniques need to be modified for. Jesse above gives gread advice
Fallkniven CC4 and DC4 are 10x better. No plastic junk, leather sheathes you can load stropping compound on, a little bigger but still very easily pocketable to make sharpening even large kitchen knives a breeze, etc.
@Superbus753 I've had mine for a few years now and sharpened hundreds of knives on it and it still cuts quickly. Maybe you are using too much pressure and ripping the diamonds off of the stone?
@@Moostery i never had problems with any other diamond stones (dmt, atoma, worksharp or wicked edge). It is many years ago that i used the dc4. Maby i got a bad quality one.

@@Moostery difficult to tell as as i wouldn’t consider any of my other diamond plates worn out yet and use them since many years. None of them are the same age and i don’t track how much use each gets (or with what steels).
Another inch or two in length and I may be interested. As is, I think it would be too fiddly and frustrating to get anything done with it. I have enough of that already!
I'd stick with a course/fine DMT Diafold from home depot for 20 bucks. I don't think the ceramic does much to the high vanadium steels. I just keep a 600 grit EZE-Lap credit card size diamond plate with a piece of goat leather glued to the back loaded with 1 micron Gunny Juice in my wallet. Most of the time I just use the strop for a quick touch up.
This thing would be perfect for someone carrying a traditional, or victorinox, with crap steel that could use a touch up throughout the day. Its hard to justify carrying a pocket sharpener with modern powder steels.
A coated m390 Benchmade at 62hrc? Yeah, i doubt that. Probably 58-60hrc, slightly lower than their regular m390 because of the coating which acts like another temper cycle and lowers hardness.
