    DQ. I love it. I get such neat stuff there, like a 6 dollar transistor radio, and 'BOSS-A-RU' coffee. Last April I found 4 cans of it in my storage unit out in Kapolei that I had forgotten about since 2009. I drank one and did not die. I get bentos and sit on the big picnic benches. Eventually you see everyone you know at DQ.

      LOL about not dying Wayne! 😂 DQ is amazing! Many wonderful foods, snacks and of course oddities like your 6 dollar transistor radio. What more can you ask for?!

    Thanks for taking one for Paco! As several folks have said tripe stew is an acquired taste. I was introduced to tripe stew at Ono Hawaiian Food on Kapahulu Avenue while I was working in the hospitality industry and my Hawaiian tour guide friends would drag me along for lunch. While Ono's has closed I always measure other tripe stews to Ono's version and have yet to find one that compares. I noticed that the unagi bento was priced very reasonably and my wife commented that the unagi probably came from China as opposed to the unagi raised in Japan. I can't taste the difference when eating unagi in a casual take-out bento but I can tell you the unagi I've had in Kyoto and in Tokyo are winnahs! Keep your videos coming. I enjoy our honest opinion on the food that you try and that is a big plus to me.

    • @FoodFiend
      @FoodFiend  2 года назад

      Yes an acquired taste for sure. I do love book tripe though. The thinner kind in pho. Thanks for noting about the difference on unagi. I've been wanting to go to Japan but you know how the world works now. Hopefully soon!

    I also remember the pre-Don Quijote days, when it was Daiei. Hearing that name and reference is a blast from the past, and conjures up fond memories of that time. 🍱 The sushi and unagi donburi looked delicious and at such reasonable prices, compared to my area. 🍣 Kudos to you for trying the tripe stew...so kind and accommodating of you to honor that request. Thanks again for another enjoyable review. ✨🌺✨

    I remember Holiday Mart... Mom would haul all six of us in the back of the old station wagon... And then she'd give us each lists and we all had a cart and then we'd head out and get what she wanted and meet back at the checkout.... And then, if my mom had enough money left, we get some Chinese plates next door... Good times good times.

    The black thing is wood ear mushroom. It doesn't have much taste, but is common in stir fry dishes, hot & sour soup, egg rolls etc. for its crunchy texture. I wish I could eat the tripe stew for you. I like it, but would be better if it was mixed with beef brisket and tendon.

    • @FoodFiend
      @FoodFiend  3 года назад

      Thank you for the information. Now I remember what it is. My grandma used to put it in soups. I like the crunch but the one in this cold dish was so over cooked it was unfortunately mushy.

    Is the food at Don Qui better than Foodland? BTW - I apologize if you mentioned it earlier, but did you ever serve in the military or work as a civilian? If so, thank you for your service. If not, thank you for the eye-opening price comparison.

    Food is definitely much better at the Kaheka location as opposed to PC or Waipahu. The outside food court selection is also better. The sushi is OK for the price. My only complaints are that there's not enough vinegar flavor, and they usually pack the rice too much, almost like a mini musubi. Should be a little looser. But I do like the fact that they sell trays of 1-2 choices like all maguro or half maguro and half salmon. That way you aren't forced to buy the assorted where you only get a couple of favorites and the rest are meh.

    • @FoodFiend
      @FoodFiend  3 года назад

      I understand about the vinegar and rice ratio. I'm not a fan of vinegar so it doesn't bother me. But I understand for those looking for something more authentic.
