I'm shocked! And how gratifying to look at the faces of young musicians (including the conductor), passionately carried away by brilliant music and performing it beautifully.
And what an ambivalent finale! Here Shostakovich returns to his youth, to such mischievous (and even "hooligan") things as the finale of the First Piano Concerto, the finale of the Sixth Symphony. But at the climax, the black shadow of the Dragon (a quote from the Scherzo) suddenly grows, under whose watchful eye all holidays and weekdays pass in this country. And the shadow is imperiously removed by the Author (monogram D-Es-C-H).

Not for the untrained ear, but still very well done. Shostakovich is for many an acquired taste. But the more of his music that you absorb, the more your tastes broaden. Much as with Stravinsky, his The Rite of Spring is not for the average person easy listening. Of course all of this music is in a strong sense driven by the stress and changes that Russia saw between 1900 and the 1980s, very hard times with dangerous leaders. Now that stress is back and I hope for the Russian people that the stress is ended soon. They were doing so well.

Well? Really? I have all the sympathy in the world for the Russian people, but most of them are not doing well under Putin. This is an amazing symphony, and the anger in the second movement is all about the abuse of Russia by its authoritarian leaders.

Was spielen die Hörner 3 nach "73" im zweiten Satz (25:26 folgende) ? Auf der eins sollte es um einen Halbton nach oben gehen, oder ist es eine Frage der Intonation?
