Thanks for your humor. Sudoku wasn't my "thing". Two months ago I was RECOMMENDED on RUclips to watch a video of yours. I was curious and I knew I would never put this in my head but watched you video up to the end. My daily newspaper had a sudoku EASY LEVEL so i tried it. 4 odd hours to understand bu suddenly i got the hang of it and thanks to all your numerous tutorials i am able to get to medium level. Sometimes Easy level is DIFFICULT to solve. Now I've installed a Sudoku app and I try to solve many as possible in one hour. Visualize and brain work together. Thanks once again for your help. Being CONFINED🤧😷🤭😱🤒 IN FRANCE helps me to improve a memory of a 70 year old with Sudoku. Hugs from France 😘👍👍👍

Hi. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT- ADDICTED to 9 squares. Sometimes I forget to give my 20 month Newfoundland to eat, I get soooo absorbed in "trying" to solve ONE COLUMN, so she begins to draw my attention by jumping on me with her drool on her chest. 🙃 My "left over" 6 cats all adopted, mine is 22 years (the other 14 strays were put to sleep, because of incurable diseases) decide to sit on my lap, against me and on my neck with their Philharmonic orchestra playing in my ears when I am in deep concentration, trying to UNDERSTAND how to solve a column. Mr. Sudoku Guy 💕 got me addicted to Sudoku. I owe him all the credit. Hugs to you 😘💐💐

Hi r.g . Thanks for your kind comment.
Delightful puzzle. For one who plays notation free, two things will set you quickly on to a good solving path. First: the 126 in row 1 must end up in the lower and middle rows of block 2 leaving a 358 triple in the upper portion of the grid is already highly restricted. SECOND you have an easy to find 45 pair in row 7, col 1+2 and hence, a 4 can now be placed in row 9, col 5, and the 13 pointing from row 7 will end up filling the two remaining cells of block 8, leaving a 286 triple in the upper row. The whole lower horizontal portion of the grid is now super restricted. The rest goes fairly well.
Congratulations George. thanks for your comment. Robin

I was hoping this would truly be a hard one, but it's at most medium level in most books I've seen, especially Frank Longo's (or the LA Times). No hidden triples, X-wings, XY-wings, unique rectangles, turbot fish, hidden rectangles, etc., that one would expect to use in a difficult puzzle. In really hard ones, usually you come to a point where all candidates for each remaining cell have to be placed and analyzed, which for me, often requires a few sittings. But thanks for the patient and careful solving! Great course for beginners or intermediate solvers.
Thanks George for your comments. I have found that most players would have had trouble with this puzzle. I would suggest that your comments refer not to difficult but diabolical puzzles. Uou are oviously an excellent player. Well done.

At 18:50 you put a 7. How can we be sure, cant the cell next to it also be a 7?
love your videos , thank you!
Good question Can't be 7 due to a 2/9 matching pair which I explain a few seconds later. Thanks for your comment.
Yes, but you only discovered the matching 2/9 pair after you had placed the seven. This suggests that you had simply remembered where the 7 went from having done this puzzle before.
Concur with Jim. There was no way to determine that the 7 went into col 1, row 4 at the time you placed it there. 'Tis a bit confusing for us novices when trying to solo. Thanks very much tho', for all the time and effort you put in to help us all. Much appreciated!

Good point Chelsea. When in the middle of filming it did not occur to me.!!!!
Hey, I didn't understand at 18:46, why it was NOT possible to put the number 7 at cell D2, and you categorically stated that the only position for the number 7 should be cell D1.

Sigifredo Salinas I have the same question
Erin Gigi ...me too?
Yea, I also have the same question. I'm thinking he previously solved the puzzle and just remembered it didn't go there! lol
If I understand you correctly as soon as the 7 was put in block 6 then with TMB it will go in block 2 cell1.
Me too, same question.
I've been struggling whether or not to change my own notations.
(Mine are more minimalistic so less notating but it's hindering me I think)
Here's a notation-free solving order that may interest some viewers (95 = row 9 column 5):
95, 99 (owing to the triple in the block),
98, 27, 89 (owing to a pair and triple in block 8),
87, 79, 28, 38, 58,
48, 66, 73, 11, 13,
32, 19, 29, 39, 37,
33, 34, 74 (leaving two pairs in the block),
23, 47, 67, 14, 94,
86, 44, 25, 26, 75,
76, 93, 71, 72, 21,
22, 56, 41 (owing to a pair in the block),
82, 83, 81, 53, 61,
51, 69, 49, 59, 42,
52, 62, 65, 55, 16,
15, 46, 45.
(Towards the end, the solving order really doesn't matter.)
Julian Well done. Thank you for your comment.

Hi Robin,
A Big thanks for your tutorials. They are the best on RUclips. Here are my remarks:
1e. Could you please start the video with a full picture of the board ( or as an attachment in your comments ?).
I can then import the sudoku start grid in the iPad app ( of Jason Linhart ) and try to solve it myself.
2e. Please do more of these type of video’s. I found it especially useful to see in your comment the technique you used and linked to the video # in which you introduced those.
3e.Credits to the video editor ( your daughter I presume ).
Thanks Johan for your support, and encouragement.
1e All puzzles solved from the beginning to end have the whole board grid view. When using Jason's app I suggest you try solving first without using the hint button. My path taken could be different than his. It depends on what I see and when.
2e You are the first who has told me that you use my website links to go to specific techniques.
3e I do all my own editing and the music is my own composition. I am a musician.
Have a great day and stay safe Robin

Very good explanation!!! Super.

Hello Robin love the way you teach and I've learned so much from you but i have a Q... At 18:47 Why'd you put 7 in the 4th row 1st column/box 4 top left cell.. coz i can't see any 7 crossing and there could be a 7 in the 4th row 2nd cell (at that stage of course)...
That is just what I was wanting to know.
Here is your answer. You will see that there is a 2/9/ matching pair in cell 2 and 5 When you have a matching pair you cannot put any other small numbers in those cells because only 2 or 9 can go there. Se lesson 8
Sorry I should have told you about the matching pair earlier. Well done for pointing this out.

When you are finding matching pairs, how do you know they are the only two numbers that can go in those two slots unless you complete more of the puzzle? Expert puzzles have so few numbers it's hard to tell.
@@maryolmstead3183 When you have two numbers than can only go in the same two cells of a box, they are a "locked pair", so no other candidates should be considered for those two cells. These are typically found when doing what Robin calls the "cross-meet" technique, he starts into that at 3:10 into this video. Basically, this comes down to two cells that only have the same two candidates that can only go in those two cells in the box. As you get into more advanced solving, there are triples, quads, etc. A triple is where you have three cells, that share the same three candidates ( sometimes, one of the cells only has two of the three ) so you can eliminate those three from any other cell in the box. If they are restricted to a row or a column, you can then use them to eliminate those candidates from other boxes in that row or column. Quads are much the same, but quite a bit harder to spot, and they won't be all in one row or column inside of a box. They COULD however be in a row or column across the whole puzzle.
Thank you for your videos. I'm trying to figure out why at 16:28 the 7 can't go in Box 6, column 8, row 4? There are no other 7's in the row?
Because the cell with 1,3 can only have a 1,3
I like the red pen. Could you also use the black pen for the big numbers that you find, and only use the red pen for the little numbers? Great videos!
Good idea Mracus. Better still use a different colour again for new big numbers. What do you think of this?
@@SudokuGuy That would be good too, and a bit of fun. Maybe use blue because it is close to black and then the smaller red numbers will contrast well.
Edit: Even better, we can borrow an idea from the Cracking the Cryptic guys and notate the little numbers for blocks differently from the little numbers for rows and columns. Maybe use red for the little numbers for blocks and green for the little numbers for rows and columns. Leave all the big numbers black. Circle the matching pairs.
If you have a rubber band, a small sponge*, and a paper towel you can make an instant eraser for your marker which will be like an eraser on the end of a pencil. Fold the paper towel a couple of times, then put the small sponge on the end of your pen and wrap the paper towel over it and the end of the pen. Fasten the paper towel to the end of the pen with the rubber band. Now you can use the top side if the pen to erase!
* Old small headphone sponges would be perfect.
Thanks for your comments Marcus.
At 18:48, why did you decide that a 7 could not go in row 4, column 2? (That was the second time, inserting a t that you made a quick internal heuristic but I got it the first time)
Sorry Sharma, see my comment below as someone else also asked this. I jumped ahead knowing there was going to be a 2 in cell 2.

Great to know you are still having fun with Sudoku.
In the bottom right box, how did you know where to place the 9. Could it also have gone in the cell two cells up
In the bottom right hand corner there was a 66,9 matching pair. The 9 could not go where the 6 is otherwise there would be 2 9's in column 8 In the bottom row there was no other place it could gol the bottom had 1360 as the only numbers which could go ,because 1 and 3 cannot go in block 9 as they are already there in block 9. Hope this helps.
@@SudokuGuy Thanks but I still can't see the logic
In the bottom right box, the only known numbers are 1 3 4 5 (not 1360 as you state above)
The "possible" red numbers in the far right column in the box are 89, 8. and 9
So, from your diagram the 9 could go in either cell.
The position is shown clearly at 10.44 in your video.
The puzzle solves because putting 9 in the extreme right bottom cell happens to be correct but I don't see that it was a logical choice,
Could you look at that again. I really benefit from your tutorials and want to understand where my logic on this is wrong
Got it now. By putting in 1 3 6 9 as possibles for the last row, (your reply explanation had 1 3 6 0 which initially confused me) I can put first the 6 then the 9 in that block. Sorry for not seeing that earlier
At 18:51 why doesn’t the small 7 go there?
I put the 7 there because in the empty cell next to it was a matching pair. Sorry I jumped ahead. Once you have a matching pair a 7 cannot go there. I hope you understand. Robin

at 10:57 why should 9 go r9c9 ? couldnt be it go to r9c3?
i love your channel btw. did you play on competition ?
Because at the last row, the row number 9, there are 2,4,5,6,7 and 8 already, meaning the only 3 cells left are 1,3 and 9. Look at r9c9, it cant be 1 or 3 because they already appeared in the same block.
See above.
@@SudokuGuy alright i got it
Placing of 7 in row 4 column 1 not clear. Kindly give me justification.
Good question. in bl 4 a 2 9 has to go there because there is a 2,9 in bl1 col 1 and a 2,9 in bl 7 col3. and a 2,9 in row 6 I knew this and sorry I jumped ahead. My fault for doing this and thanks for asking.
Kindly go with some expert sudoku and solve it by briefly explaining the skycrapper rule...

@@emedici2002 there's a matching pair 2/9/ and once you have a matching pair no other numbers can go there.

In 10:55, why did u put a 9
Because it is part of a matching pair 6/9/ the 6/9/ mactching pair is due to block 9 having a 1,3. Row 9 had 4 empty cells 1,3,6,9 were the possible numbers. Watch the video again in this area. Have fun and happy learning.

You say that 7 cant go there, there, there about 16 mins I dont understand why 7 cant be on D8, very bad explanation in that case
Please tell me the mins and sec you are referring to. I have looked at the puzzle and everything is OK.
@@SudokuGuy Exactly at 16:28 he point at H4 and says it can´t be there (7)( if you Marked columns A to I and Rows 1 to 9) He did´t explain why it can´t be there, there are not any 7 in that row, and not any 7 in that column, still I think it is a bad explain. English is not my "home language"
