- In the second round of the 2020 Travelers Championship, Phil Mickelson caught a break due to being left-handed as he received a ruling that gave him relief from the cart path towards a flatter area in the rough. The ruling allowed Mickelson the chance hit the green in regulation and two-putt to save par at the par-4 17th hole.

Different Rules apply towards Relief from Immovable Obstruction and Ground Under Repair.

Fav golfer ever
Newer golfer here. I saw that he was bent over and dropped from about 18 inches up. Most of the other drops I've seen have been from shoulder height. Is there a reason for the different styles of drops? Is dropping from shoulder height required? Thanks in advance. Cheers.
Until fairly recently it was a rule to drop from shoulder height. However after a rule change a knee height drop is now required. :)
The Primary reason the Drop went from Shoulder height down to Knee height (2019) was to help prevent the Ball from rolling out of its Relief Zone.
If it Rolls Out, the It must be dropped again. If It Rolls Out again, then it is Placed as close as possible to Its Impact Point.
As shown here that can still happen even with the lower Drop Height.

Love the cheeky “grab the short club” to measure the side he didn’t want to go on but “hand me the driver” when on the preferred side lol. 🤣
Not what he did. He needed to find his nearest point of relief with the club he was going to use up on the hill after his stance. So actually using a longer club on the hill would have made his nearest point even further. Being lefty, on the low side of the path his nearest point was just clear of the path so it didn't matter what club he was using. Then he gets one club length (driver) to drop it in. I hope that makes sense with all the words.

A Player has to use the club he intends to play to measure a Point of Relief, then the *Nearest* PoR must be determined from the *Original Lie.* After NPR is found, you can use any club for determining the *Relief Area* the Ball is to be dropped in and then *must stay in after the Drop.*

Aiden... he didn't use the driver to determine the nearest point of relief based upon his stance from where he ended up playing the ball. The rules allow a semi-circle area for free relief based upon any club in the bag once the nearest point of relief is determined (the first white tee near the path where he ended up playing the shot). the semi-circle is different from how he would play the shot... everyone would use a driver to determine the size of that area.

nearest point of relief is determined from taking "complete relief" which includes stance. As you can see when he stood just outside the GUR, this would have place his ball even further up the hill. This would have put the ball further away than where the relief was on the other side of the path... so he was fortunate that the GUR was there. If there was no GUR... he would have had to drop on the hill... and had a very unfavorable side-hill lie. FYI.. if he was right handed his nearest point of relief with the GUR would have place the ball just outside the white line (instead of his feet)... this appears to have been closer than his actual relief on the other side of the path
Can anyone tell me what was wrong with the first drop? Looked like grass to me. Sounded like official said you're probably going to hit the curb.....idk about that.
It is ground under repair which is why he was setting up above the white line

tastyveg....being left handed did work to his advantage... complete relief is determined by where he stands then the location of the ball. Since he was left handed. His stance would have been just outside the white line... then the ball would be further up the hill... as he demonstrated when he took his 9 iron to determine where the ball would have been. If he was right handed his nearest point of relief would have been putting the BALL, not his feet just outside the white line. This would probably have been closer than where he took relief on the other side of the path... so if he would have had to play it from up the hill as a right hander... if so he wouldn't have taken relief and would have played it from the path
I am totally comfortable that others might not believe this. It's been 40 years since I witnessed it and I still don't believe what I saw myself. I was volunteering as a Special Marshall for the LA Open back in the late 70's and was escorting a group that included Tom Watson around the course on Pro-Am Day. I forget the hole but his approach shot ended up on the middle of the cart path to the right of the green, and between he and the green was a tree that must have been 40 feet high and thick. I had the drop zone on that side and protected his ball until he arrived, then asking him if he wished for me to drop the rope between he and the green? I wanted an answer fast as I was alone, there was a considerable gallery following Watson around, and he and I were on the public side of that rope and I was going to have a devil of a time keeping people away so that he could take his shot. to my amazement he replied "No, thanks. I'm good."
Well, um, OK. I returned to duties. I got a good clearance of the gallery around him and then did my thing of squatting down and letting the gallery have a clear view. And I'll be damned but the next thing I saw was Watson taking his ball off the cart path, straight up into the air, over that tree, and landing gently onto the green about 4 feet from the pin.
Straight. Up.
Off asphalt.
Who knew???

He didn't "use" the rules. This was the only possible option under the rules unless he played the ball from its original spot on the cart path.
it's an iterative process, when a genuine problem comes with no rule to make it "fair" they may write a new rule, sometimes even to change the way to play a sport to make it more dynamic/challenging

I thought you can only change your ball if it’s unfit for play. As in cracked or cut. Scuff would not mean it’s unfit for play. So you have to play with the same ball, throughout the hole.
The Rules Changes of 2019 now allow for the cleaning and/or replacement of a Ball anytime you are taking Free or Penalty Relief.

I don't think that's right. When has a ball on a cart path ever not been allowed relief? Honestly? If so, I'm unaware of it. So, surely there was relief. Regardless of the adjacent g.u.r. From what I understood, I believe he did in fact take relief from the path. Nearest point, etc. It's just that the nearest point to the left side was outside of the g.u.r., as g.u.r. is essentially considered part of the path, in this instance. One of us is right. Idk.

This was totally legitimate. Relief is determined at the nearest point of complete relief... if the GUR was not there he would have had to stand just off the path on the side of the ball... but since the GUR was part of the cart path his nearest point on that side was standing just outside the white line. Putting the ball up the hill even further. The nearest point on the other side was where he first put the tee in the ground. So the relief point that he ended up actually taking, was closer to where the ball was on the path. Which is the correct way to follow the rule.

I thought that you have to drop on the side of the cart path your ball is on. If it is on the left side of path, you have to drop on left side of path.
That’s normally the case, but in this case the cart path was considered part of the ground under repair according to the rules official. Because he’s left handed, his nearest point of relief was on the other side of the path in comparison to being on the hill.
You can't always look at it that way. It is nearest point of relief which is ball AND stance. For example, if right handed and you are looking for nearest point to the left of the path it is directly off the path. If you are looking to the right you need to take your stance and then take the club you are going to use and mark it there. So many times if the ball is towards the right side, your nearest point of relief would be to the left. And vice versa if you are left handed.
@@MrJwest57 actually the ground under repair becomes part off the path. That is why he couldn't drop it on the path first, and then take relief from the path...it actually just saved him a step.

What Phil fails to do here is to actually pace off the nearest point of relief and the rules official ends up doing it for him. That's not what is supposed to happen, but the result was the same as if Phil had actually done it.

The rules only allow 5 minutes to find a lost ball but 20 fricken minutes to drop a ball and then decide how to hit it. Jesus Christ.

All in a day's work for a pro golfer -- but if you are a super pro the job gets trickier with so many cameras. But it's still not a problem for Phil, who might have been named Tricky Phil if he was not a Lefty.
Rule here is explicit and addresses the conundrum precisely:Rule 57c,states a player must throw his or her longest club or umbrella into the nearby lake,then ask to see the Lady Captain or the handicap secretary,and berate her for her lack of knowledge of Golf,and,and ,what does she know about golf anyway? Then head to clubhouse for fifteen schooners/pints of bitter and a marinated pickle sandwich,and inform all the Bogans at the bar that the women's club should be restricted to one day a week,,yup that's it!!!!

A Right Handed Golfer would have had to stand in the grass to the Right of the Path and Sole his Iron to determine the Point of Relief for that side.
His Left Side PoR would have been about 6 inches Above the White Line on the Hillside - which would have been his *NEAREST PoR* to the location of the Ball on the Path.
For a Rightie, It's almost always 6 inches on the Left side of the Path or 2.5 feet or more on the Right side of the Path.
Far too many take improper Relief from Cart Paths because they believe its based on which edge of the Path the Ball is closer to.

Phil actually broke a rule here. He said “grab a new one actually, we don’t have to use this one.” When in fact he did have to play it. USGA rule 4.2C says that you can only substitute a ball if it is cracked or broken. NOT if it is scuffed, scraped, or it’s paint is damaged. 1 stroke penalty.

Its within the rules and to avoid getting a penalty. if a golfer calls in a rules official and his move gets blessed, there is no penalty if it is incorrect. If a golfer makes his own determination and is deemed incorrect... there is a penalty...
@@cbrigati1869 and a Good Thing the Rules Official was called in. The Grass to the Left of the Cart Path was NOT "Ground Under Repair" as Phil initially thought, but part of the "Cart Path", so two completely Different Relief scenarios.
Taking Free Relief from GUR here would have eventually cost Phil Penalty Strokes.

There is a "Reasonable" assessment in any considered shot when one is seeking Free Relief.
And while Phil is actually Right Handed, he always plays Left Handed, and that can and will affect the Points of Relief he can get versus a Right Handed Player.
@@apaulmcdonough2170 The powers to be have ruled on this and said it is perfectly within the rules to say you need relief because you are hitting this shot left handed and after relief hit it right handed (and vice versa). Rule is not in the spirit of the game but they have ruled it is allowable.

You can establish relief with your Normal Side, and then play it Off Side, if you are Silly enough to try.
You CAN'T establish Relief for your Off Side, then play it from your Normal Stance.
Has a semi circle of grass to drop it on, but Hey - let's drop it right on the edge, so that it runs out twice and then the ball can be placed. So many times I have seen this - it makes a mockery of the rules of golf, but then Michelson is the master when it comes to bending the rules to suit his purpose, isn't he?
He and every other Golf is allowed to drop anywhere in their Relief Zone.

Because if he dropped it in the wrong place, it would be a penalty. If he then signed his card with an incorrect score it would be a DQ. Potentially costing him hundreds of thousands of dollars. He was being quick as possible in given scenario. Nothing he was doing was being done to slow anything down. Although maybe people watching could use the extra time to think about the situation a little bit.

Take the Wrong "Free Relief" and you're going to be Penalized.
