Thank you for the cultural education!! I definitely didn't know that's where the Sims position came from and I'll never forget that. I always want to be respectful and culturally competent with my patients!
Hello Level Up RN, thank you so much for this video. As a suggestion, it would be nice to insert pictures of the described positions. This will help concretize the concept. Thank you again.
This is the most concise and straight-forward video I've found after watching seveal videos, and I am grateful for Meris for her clear, eloquent presentation. I now have a much better grasp of important patient positions I must know as I begin my career as an RN.
Love the comment you make about the outdated use of "SIMS" - I didn't realize that's where the name came from even though I have heard stories of the gynecologist before. Thank you!!
The culturally relevant piece about Dr. Jay M. Sims and his experimenting on enslaved women w/o their consent is very important as we develop greater awareness of injustices in American history and present-day biases in western biomedicine.
Thank you, I agree completely! We must recognize the ways in which western medicine is rooted in a myriad of unethical and unjust practices, and be sure to call that history out loudly, rather than sweeping it under the rug! --Meris :)
Wooow I’ve been in nursing school for 4 years and have yet to see any educator acknowledge this about “Sims” before now. I like you even more now ! Thank you you’re one of the special ones !
Wow, thank you so much! What a kind thing to say. Very important to share information about the harmful roots of our profession and to do better going forward! --Meris
Take some soup, pour it out... have your hand palm up like you are holding a bowl of soup (Supine), then turn your hand over so that the palm is facing down, as if you just poured (prone) the soup out. Take some soup, pour it out.
In general, the best position for someone who is in pain is whatever position is the most comfortable for them. Semi-fowler's position or lateral recumbent positions would probably be the best for someone who had abdominal surgery. --Meris
I'm so sorry I missed this comment until now! Recovery position is usually just lying on your left side, while "Sims'" involves having the legs and arm staggered in such a way that it turns the person's body so the perineal area is more readily accessible for things like suppository administration. I hope that makes sense! --Meris :)
Absolutely! It is something we need to be discussing more openly and frequently, and no longer allowing his name to be attributed to any part of our daily practice. Thanks so much for your comment! --Meris
Thank you for mentioning the history behind the name sims position. I will definitely spread the word. This is definitely not a good thing. This sims man should not be "glorified". he does not sound like a dr.; he sounds like a psychopath

With the weight on the hip and shoulder ;lateral
Whats the best position for someone with stomach surgery or painful abdomen?
In general, the best position for someone who is in pain is whatever position is the most comfortable for them. Semi-fowler's position or lateral recumbent positions would probably be the best for someone who had abdominal surgery. --Meris
Its literally on every Nursing fundamentals test even if the prof wont tell you
Meris, can you also call SIMS position the “recovery” position? I’ve always known it by that name if I’m picturing it correctly.
I'm so sorry I missed this comment until now! Thank you for bringing up the violent racist history behind JM Sims.
Absolutely! It is something we need to be discussing more openly and frequently, and no longer allowing his name to be attributed to any part of our daily practice. Thanks so much for your comment! --Meris
Dang what a dark history for the term Sims position. First I ever heard of it.
Not very well known history at all--hate being the bearer of dark history, but thanks for watching and learning with me! --Meris :)
Thank you for mentioning the history behind the name sims position. I will definitely spread the word. This is definitely not a good thing. This sims man should not be "glorified". he does not sound like a dr.; he sounds like a psychopath
