They didn't decide to knock it over for fun. As you can see in the image, the ground was slowly collapsing and there was a risk of that rock collapsing inadvertently which could be dangerous. So it was decided they would do it in a controlled fashion. The way they went about doing it with that LOONY man poking the bottom there I don't condone, but who am I to question the actions of a crazy man.
