  • In the episode of TYRANIS Customs we walk through the process of designing and building a dual a arm independent front suspension system step by step, from start to finish. We show you the whole process as well as discuss the theory behind the key design decisions in hopes this video helps you to build your own custom go-kart front end! If you've got any questions leave em below!

    Don't know if you have access to a lathe but I used 1 inch tube with aluminum bushings pressed into each end and reamed the bushings to fit the 5/8 inch cold rolled bar pivots. The 5/8 inch bars are attached to brackets at each end of the A arms similar to your build. I built a much simpler spindle design. It is basically a 1-1/4 inch bar drilled 5/8 inch end to end clamped between the two Heim joints with a single 5/8 inch shaft threaded on each end. The bar pivots between the Heim joints. the spindle is attached by simply welding it to to the bar. The parts count is reduced and complex fabrication is all but eliminated. I reduced the diameter of the 1-1/4 bar where it meets the Heim joints so it does not interfere with suspension deflection. Like you, I built my suspension as a complete module with rack and pinion steering. The modular approach facilitates future modifications or repairs. Videos like yours are a valuable source of inspiration for other's projects. I went a little crazy on this build and included jacking bolts to adjust suspension height. The lower attachment points for the coil overs can be adjusted in one inch increments to change the spring stiffness. The combination of adjustable coil over s plus adjustable heights allows you to "tune" the suspension without having to cut and weld. Your "V" bend for the upper coil over mount was the inspiration for my adjustable height feature. Visualize your "V" with pivots in the middle and jacking bolts to adjust the end of the "V" where it connects to the coil over.

      Thanks Biliken! I'm always ready for things to go off script these days haha. As for doing builds for people, thats always quietly been a goal here. Once we button up the karts were working on the plan is to price out what it would take to start crankin them out. After the red kart 95% if the R&D will be done and I'll just have to sort out the numbers. Your 3203 becoming a TYRANIS Custom is a very real possibility though 😎🦖

    The shocks mounted further out on the control arms is recommended to get rid of unsprung weight. Your concept of them having more force further in is correct, but the spring compression is more accurate when mounted as close to the wheel as possible.

    • @TyranisCustoms
      @TyranisCustoms  3 года назад +1

      That's a great point! I wasn't really taking unsprung weight into consideration here to be honest. Ill keep that in mind for the cross kart tho!

  • @lordreginaldfilibuster
    @lordreginaldfilibuster 3 месяца назад

    so your front suspension relies on the welds holding a couple pipes that are prying away from oneanother. drop that V bar at the top of the springs to the underside of the 2 top bars for better support and maybe flip it over so each side points downward.

  • @bobsbarnworkshop
    @bobsbarnworkshop 3 года назад +2

    For a better fit on the A arm rotation points why not use solid 5/8” bar stock, weld a cap on one end and thread the other end to just the right length, then it’s not pivoting on screw threads? Great design, I need to convert my old silver fox the same way!

    • @TyranisCustoms
      @TyranisCustoms  3 года назад +1

      That's not a bad idea! Ultimately I'd like to get more appropriate hardware without threads all the way down, but thats just what I had readily available at the time!

  • @skyfreakwi
    @skyfreakwi Месяц назад

    24:55 Actually the more they lean in the more progressive it will be. As the arms move up they act on the shocks in a more linear fashion. The best thing to do would go cantilever for maximum progression. Your lean looks good now, avoid straight 90s because you'll go over center and it'll get softer as it progresses.

    There's something interesting about off road go karts. Simple yet effective off road. Maybe farther down the line you guys could do a Tillotson 225 (or similar built small block) single seat rally kart to rival these big block yerf dogs.
