This song used to be played exclusively for servicemen but eventually some vets convinced Toby to release it and it became a big hit.
I was at one of the first concerts for civilians he played it for. Portland, Maine….we went nuts! ❤

The song was written in late 2001, and was inspired by Toby's father's death in March 2001, as well as the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States later that year. It was released in May 2002 as the lead single from the album, Unleashed. The song topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming his biggest solo hit on that chart. At first he wasn't going to release it as a single he was only going to perform it for the troops but the reaction was so strong that the Commandant of the Marine Corps James L. Jones told Toby it was his duty as an American citizen to record the song. "It's your job as an entertainer to lift the morale of the troops," Jones said to Toby. "If you want to serve, that is what you can do.

Hi there, I'm a military wife. My husband put in 33 years and went on 22 deployments during that period. Sometimes I felt like a single mother. But I'm so proud of him, I wouldn't want it any other way. Thank you for the things you said about being thankful for your freedoms. A lot of people get behind the military when the fighting starts. But they get bored after awhile, and go back to gaming, shopping, watching TV. Please remember when the war is still going after 5, 10, 15, years, they still need your support. Thank you

This is a beautiful post! Thank you for your Service! My dad was a Vietnam Veteran. He was a Marine Helicopter Mechanic who flew men back and forth to Vietnam. There’s even greater pride in our country when raised by parents and grandparents who served proudly. ❤

The problem is that the public EDU system stopped teaching actual history about 40 years ago
More recently (last 10 years), it's far worse. At least when I was in school, I learned enough to appreciate the USA and want to look more into it. Nowadays, they pretty much teach students that US history is evil, built upon slavery, and you should judge others by the color of their skin. Not even joking. Canada is even more far gone.
Just sayin. Lol. People don't realize how close we are to loosing it all.
Sometimes I feel like it's already gone.
I've been watching it slowly go away for 52 years and I've been raising the alarm to people that refuse to listen.
Sadly, we are much closer than most people realize. The current administration seems unaware that China is already at war with us. War comes in various forms now days. Cyber attacks, influence operations, and the attack on the dollar are all forms of a new type of a warfare called unrestricted warfare, and even if the administration doesn’t realize this we need to because we are all participants in this new fight to preserve freedom.

Sad thing is our military is now heavily engaged in DEI and ESG. Our military is so much weaker. Very very sad.!

In the history of the world freedom is far more the exception than the rule. The idea that common people should have any say in government is relatively recent, historically.
The problem with the fickle flame of freedom, is you can't see it right away, when it goes out. We will laugh someday in America, how we thought we were free for so long after we obviously were no longer.
As long as the Constitution is within memory, we have the ability. It simply needs to be taken seriously, as it should considering it is the "supreme law of the land"... for too long it has been neglected. That is one of our greatest downfalls as a nation.
@@SicilianChick we can only count on the Constitution as long as it is respected and we demand our rights. That said, it is extremely good that those rights are written down, because you always have that to refer to. In Great Britain they have an unwritten "constitution" based on common law. The government there has found it very easy to erode rights people thought they had because they were not written down. It is more difficult to take away rights that are spelled out. Not impossible, but more difficult.

I could listen to this all day. He never planned to release this song. It was just for the military, but they convinced him that everyone should hear this. It was released a significant amount of time after 9/11. I don't have any complaints about it. You must have really had to dig for a complaint. Didn't you see how the military reacted to this. Toby Keith wasn't originally gonna release this song. He wrote it out of anger from 9/11. He played it for the troops. 4 star General, James L. Jones told Toby it was his duty as an American to record the song and release it.

People do not understand and value the Freedoms and Liberties that we enjoy every day were, which were fought for, and many, many men & women sacrificed their lives so we could have it and keep it. I too wonder about society today, and whether there are men/women brave enough and willing to make necessary sacrifices to maintain our way of life. I just came across your site today, and subscribed - you are an inspiration. I am wondering if you would or have reacted to the following: Taking Chance, Saving Private Ryan, We were soldiers (my husband is Vietnam Veteran), The Star Spangled Banner as never before told, and this song: Welcome Home - a soldiers song.? There is another version to this song - same title but with the subtitle: USAF Tribute. it will give a whole new meaning to the lyrics of this song.

My Dad DID loose a eye on Guadalcanal, he did fly a flag till he died, my husband was in Vietnam, my son lost his rt leg after 9/11 as a Marine. Americans are treating the US as a disposable country. I fear for its future.

Welcome! I respond mostly to music, however I would like to start getting into some other things. Yes, I take requests; on my community page, I post polls for those requests.
It's basically an anger-fueled anthem. It worked when it came out, because of 9/11. There's lots of great country songs with plenty of content though. It's another world of music in the country genre, well heck it's over 100 years of music. An artist who's great at packing in the lyrics is Rodney Crowell. But yeah, I know a LOT of country music, haha it's like a useless talent..if you ever need any recommendations.
