Ok. Can we just pause the video here for a second, and take some time to reflect? Can you imagine how awesome Lemonade’s existence must be? She lives in this massive, several storage home. Every now and then, someone upgrades the design of the home, fix it up with new paint, furniture and fancy decorations. And if that’s not flying fancy enough for you, here is the cherry on top: FOOD RANDOMLY APPEARS FROM THE SKIES! And not any random food! Your favourite treats, and nutritious food! As if Doordash could read your mind and remember what your previous order preferences are. AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY A DIME! Can you imagine? Lem lives the most amazing life! She can just look adorable, make the rare occational appearance on Ollies HamCam, and that’s it! I sure would love to be Ollies pet in my next life ❤️
"i meant to do that, move along now nothing to see here!" these are such awesome forage toys... great work, as always. brilliant idea. Happy New Year Blessings to you and your household :)
Ayy back after 4 year getting another hamster in a month when I move into my own place, so excited to catch myself up on all the new hamster videos and binge watch the old videos once again!
I got really excited when i clicked on this video because ive literally been hoarding pinecones for my hammy and ive been trying to think of cool diy stuff to do with them as boredom breakers but then i remembered half way through the video that i no longer have a hamster and haven't had for the past month. Ive literally got nothing to do anymore i used to spend most my time making stuff for my ham😭
Hmm, that's unusual. Maybe try soaking them in a vinegar & baking soda (or lemon juice and baking soda) mixture instead. Coat the pinecones generously in the baking soda first before pouring the vinegar/lemon over the top, there will be a lot of fizzing and bubbling. Let them soak for 30 minutes, scrub with a small brush, rinse well with clean water and let them dry. Hopefully it works!
My hamster doesn't chew anything I have given him, apart from Whimzees, he takes them to bed 😅 On the other hand, my gerbils go crazy with their daily pine cones!
My female syrian hamster hardly chews anything I give her, things you would think she would chew on 🤔 some folks say putting a bit of hamster safe peanut butter on hammy chews can help them to chew more 🌾🐹🌻
Using a tiny amount of honey won't pose any health risks, I used about 1/2tsp when making the paste but only applied about 1/10th of the actual paste on the one pinecone. Half a teaspoon of honey is about 3.5g, so about 0.3g would be present in the finished pinecone. Most hybrid dwarfs weigh between 25-50g so the amount of honey is negligible to their health, it just adds some flavour to the paste. Keep in mind that is completely safe for a dwarf to occasionally have small amounts honey in their diet, just as they can have small amounts of fruit, they just shouldn't have it in large amounts or too frequently. Too much too often may cause consistently high blood-sugar levels which can lead to more serious long term complications. Commercial treats containing honey often use large quantities which is why it's advised to avoid those but in homemade treats you get to be in control of the quantity used so you can make sure your hamster isn't overindulging. All that being said, if skipping the honey would give you greater peace of mind you can swap it for a safe raw nut butter like peanut, hazelnut or almond (just make sure there's no additives). If you're comfortable feeding fruit you can use plain apple puree, mashed banana, pumpkin/carrot puree, etc. Or you can skip that step altogether, it will still be a usable paste just with a more neutral flavour :)
Can we skip the baking step? I thought you had to bake pine before giving to hammies but if I could just let it air dry after the white vinegar that would be easier
why would you want to sanitize a natural produce? i mean, the hamsters in the wild surely don't have their surroundings sterile...i never wash or sterilize even the pinecones i use for christmas decoration in my home....
There are a few good reasons. Firstly, domestic hamsters and wild hamsters do not have the same immune systems because of the very different environments they and their predecessors come from. Wild hamsters also live significantly shorter lifespans than domestic hamsters because they are exposed to more health risks - including a wider range of bacteria. Your pet hamster is more likely to become unwell if they are exposed to unfamiliar bacteria, sterilising is an easy way to prevent this and avoid unnecessary suffering for your hamster (and avoid a large vet bill for you). Your pet hamster is also likely to consume the pinecone, if it has been contaminated with parasites then those will enter your hamsters digestive system which may again lead to suffering and sickness for them, and a large vet bill for you. Thirdly, items from outdoors may carry other pests like wood mites which can infest your hamsters enclosure, and if left untreated may eventually infest your own furniture and home. So you can see sterilising has many benefits not just for your hamster but for you as well, and this particular method comes with no downsides or negative side effects. It makes more sense to do it than to not do it and take the gamble :)
@@SomethingAnimal thank you for your expalnation. makes sense. i honestly never sterilized anything natural coming to my house. i go to forest and pick branches, pinecones, forest moss for decor, my christmas tree is also a natural element...never had issues other than some tiny spiders but then again there are spiders in my house as well naturally:-) didn't know hamsters lived a shorter life in nature! thank you!!

Enjoyed watching the pine cones expand in the oven - didn’t know this fact. Reminded me of as a kid watching Shrinky Dinks change shape when heated. 😅

Do you have an animal shelter nearby that you could make those toys for, with their permission, of course?
Love your videos ❤ saludos desde México and happy new year 🎉
You always have something interesting to show us. You are so smart. I love your videos!😊🐹❤👍🏻
I made these but after putting them in the oven multiple times they still have a kind of shiny wax coat on them, any tips?

Love it 👌 very nice.😊
5:33 oh no 💀
Is the version of the paste that is suitable for dwarf hamsters? Something I could use instead of honey?

literally was just wondering about pine cones for hammies

i didn't know you could FORCE a pinecone to open!
I could've sworn you had a Twitter account; but I can't find it? : ( Is it under "something animal" or is it different?
We left Twitter in 2020, you can find us on Instagram though! Links are in the video description :)
