  • I've shot loads of digital cameras for this channel, some I've loved and some of them I haven't. Here are the ones I love, and one I didn't get on with at all, with reasons why!
Did I for example pick the Fujifilm X-T1 over the X-E1? Full frame over aps-c?
All the digital cameras I love are here! If you're looking for a good one, check out the video!

As I've said before on here I'm a massive fan of the Fujifilm X-E series of cameras, so much so that I have the X-E1, the X-E2s, and the X-E3,
My favourte of those three is the X-E2s, that sensor is the best of the bunch IMO. The X-E3 is let down by the touch screen, which I switch off, and the joystick instead of the 'D' pad.

Very interesting. Fair and balanced as usual. When I used cameras for my job, I settled on Fujifilm. I found them easy to use and the files required minimal editing. No that I just take pictures for fun, I use Olympus. (I can't afford Fujifilm lenses) I hate, hate, hate Sony for personal reasons and I would never use a Sony anything.

I’m mostly landscape/cityscape/architecture guy who mostly shoots 35mm and polaroids/instax wide. I do have digital stuff but mostly old one - 5d classic, olympus e300, ccd digicams, fuji s3 pro and x pro 1. SOOC colors from Jpegs on these old cameras do look like slide film (and black and white modes are amazing). Although i still shoot them very rarely, it’s mostly analog cause it’s more chill and relaxed to me. And there’s alao minidv camcoder in addition to my 8mm cams. Although digital wise - i want myself something like harinezumi camera or papershoot.

I sold my X-Pro1 and could have had an X-E4, but after a lot of deliberating, I went for the older X-E3, I still have all my vintage lenses, but now I tend to use them more on my film camera a gorgeous Minlota XD-11, Seiko all metal focal plane shutter, Aperture and Shutter Priority Auto modes the first camera to feature both!

I bought a Fuji XT1 based on your suggestion and personally I shoot it more than ALL my full frame cameras put together. It's not fast and the rubber grip is starting to come loose but the photos that it produces are so nice that I keep shooting it all these years later. I also agree that it produces some magic with a vintage 135 on it, something about the colors and blur make such a great photo!! Almost film like to me, and the fact that it has a choice of color modes along with film simulation modes makes it a keeper in my opinion!!! Great to see you doing so well...I am glad I subbed to you so long ago, I keep coming back and catching up on your adventures and find!!! You still remind me of the father from Shaun of the dead!! Thanks!

Thank you for another wonderful video. I got an Olympus EM1 and Zuiko 50 mm f1.4 for 400 CAD. Still using the combo for daily shootings. It only has 1080p, but I like the vintage look with the film simulation in da Vinci. It is like unlimited 16 mm film for video and solid beautiful film vibe for still photo. I didn't expect my habit to be so easily satisfied.

I picked up an X-E1 for next to nothing a few years back, and when I take it out I can never really tell if I'll find it amazing or infuriating. It's horribly clunky, the screen and finder are awful, peaking is barely usable, and features wise it was way behind its MFT competitors even back when it came out. On the other hand, it's so tactile and filmlike in the the hand, and in right conditions the images look amazing in a way that's almost hard to explain.

One of the reasons I always shoot RAW with my Sony A7ii is because I agree with this video that the colours are not the best. They're far from terrible, but I find Fuji and Canon to handle colour so much better. By shooting in RAW, it means I have to Lightroom the images, and can fix the colour much more to my liking.
The focus peaking as Nigel says is brilliant. The battery life on the A7ii is a tad better than the i, but it's still not brilliant. I never go out without a spare. I'd highly recommend it, and for me the stabilisation is perfect addition- in fact it's the only reason I bought it over the i version.
I had an old Canon 1000D for a while. Pretty much bottom of the market, but you know what? I found it was an awesome little APS-C camera. No focus peaking though.
Alas, those two and a borrowed Xtsomething or other from Fuji is my entire digital mirrorless experience.

Fascinating video, real world chat. I've always shot canon digital cameras, currently using a Canon SL2. However, I have several older digital cameras, my current favourites are (in order):
    Sony R1 and F828, Canon Pro1, Konica A2 and Olympus Camedia C8080.
You don't have to spend a fortune to get great results. Colour is a subjective thing, my Canon SL2, Sony R1 and Sony F828 produce fabulous colours, in my humble opinion. Till next time, many thanks.

I like how you think about cameras for stills. You focus exclusively on the features that are useful to you and on the quality of the out of camera images. As a result, you have cameras you love using and you can even buy them dirt cheap. For myself, although I have the X-T10, X-T2, and X-E2, I keep going back to the X-Pro3, because of the flip down screen and the Classic Negative simulation.

I pretty much agree with your assessment. I have two 24 MP Nikon DSLRs, a full frame and an APSC, but it's my Fujifilm XE-1 (which I only use with vintage lenses) that I use 90% of the time. It's fun to use and the images it renders are great.

Good review. I'd also recommend the Canon 5D - I used mine for commercial work for several years (with good L series lenses such as the classic 24-70 mk1). It gives a certain look to photos, which no other camera I've tried can compare to. I got a Sony A7 after watching your older review. Fabulous camera - I use it with my collection of vintage lenses and it's still holding its own against the newer Sony big beasts (except for built in stabilisation but that's not usually a problem for what I shoot). I got a Sony A6000 to carry around in the car and it's great too. For lightness, the A7 wins against the 5D and only needs a couple of generic batteries as it is a bit heavy on the battery use. One good tip is to carry a powerbank to charge the camera when you are out and about.

Best camera I have used is Fuji XT3, spectacular features.
Favourite camera I have used is Fuji XE2, love using it, will never sell.
Current camera I use is Sony A6400, modern/great quality with similar form factor to XE2.
    Owned these: Panasonic G7, GM5, GX85, GH4. Sony RX100 II. Canon 6D, T3i (600D). Ricoh GR. Fuji X Pro 2, XE3, XE1, XA1.
Currently exploring switching to a phone with the Sony Xperia 1 II. Love the shutter button and pro apps. Ordered a rubber grip for better ergonomics. Has 3 cameras (16mm, 24mm, 70mm), which leaves a big gap for a normal focal length 35 to 50mm. They need to fill that gap for me to seriously consider moving. Ideally they would switch the 16mm to a 35mm and make the 70mm a 1 inch sensor with big aperture for some subject separation.

I used the Canon M100 for a long time, and I loved the tiny form factor and the great touch screen. But I hated not to have a dedicated button for focus zoom and the peeking isn't the best.
I now bought the X-E2 and I have to agree, it's awesome. If it also had IBIS, it would be the camera of the century.

What a wonderful overview, thank you! I also have a 5D classic, and feel exactly as you feel about it: I absolutely love it, but the lack of proper manual focusing makes it very hard to use with manual lenses with bigger apertures, when the focal plane has to be dialed in. This is getting especially hard for me as I am now in need of glasses, and cannot tell sharpness by the eye. I recently had a portrait shooting session where I had zero usable shots. Gave the camera to my better half who has much better eyesight, and even her shots were missed. There's no issue with autofocus lenses, but it is a let down that I cannot use my lovely M42 lenses for portrait shooting. I also have an APSC, the M50 mark II Canon. It has a wonderful manual focus aid, the focal plane lights up in red in the viewfinder, making the use of manual lenses a joy. Sadly though, it is pretty much usable only up to 320ISO, above that it gets pretty noisy and its 25MP quickly drop down to effectively much less. Wonderful for 1080p video though, even up to ISO1000 the films look good.
All in all, I'd say my favorite is the 5D classic but I truly wish it had focus peeking for manual lenses. So, I finally decided to pull the trigger on the Sigma 35mm ART lens.. huge wonderful piece of glass, quite an investment as well, but reputedly focuses very well. It is on its way to me, so I have yet to experience how well it works with the 5D classic.

Focusing vintage lenses with OVF isn't that bad, just half press the shutter button and wait for it to beep. If it's one of my M42 lenses I might have to open the aperture wide to help it find focus but it's not a major problem. That said, I would still like to fit a split image focusing screen.

While venturing down Sony's fullframe series, the A7M1 is the one that I found to replicate the most pleasing green color, making it really easy to make raw pictures close to the film world. The A7M2 sadly failed to do the same thing. The A7M1 had a pretty bad lens mount and could potentially break if mounted with a heavy lens.

    • @marcp.1752
      @marcp.1752 11 месяцев назад

A7II does have exactly the same sensor, so that is bogus, in terms of colors. A7 Mark I (which i own since Jan. 2014!) is a flawed Android box "Sony Play Memories" design, weak Lens mount, internal Sensor reflections, mediocre eyecup, and not even real 14-bit (lossless) compressed RAW files, even my R1 (2005) could record real 14-bit RAW, see RAW Digger for details - 11+7 bit Delta compression, which does show artifacts.

  • @TheCruisinCrew

In my opinion, the A7R2 is the best choice for the price right now (second hand). It has 42 megapixels full frame, so even if you shoot it in APSC-mode, you still get an 18 megapixel image, which gives you an enormous amount of lens choices. It's also rather small (the A7R3 became significantly bulkier). It can shoot 4k video, has great IBIS, fantastic autofocus and all the features of the previous Sony cameras. I got mine under 1k, which is amazing considering the original price of over 3k...

I have the A7sii. This one is getting cheeper now. I initially got this for video but found that the low light capability results is super smooth still images. It’s definitely good for vintage lenses. However, colour wise, I notice that shots taken with an older DSLR Canon look better.

    • @purpleeinstein
      @purpleeinstein 10 месяцев назад

@TheCruisinCrew I fully concur. In my opinion, the A7R2’s feature set gives the best “bang for the buck”. Also purchased mine for under a grand which leaves more $$$ to add to my growing vintage lens collection. The only negative is the not so great battery life, but that can be dealt with by carrying a few backup batteries. All in all, a fantastic camera for the money.

X-T2 is amazing. I call it my soul camera. You really should give the Canon M5 a try, which can get for use $300 if you shop around. Down side of the ef-m series, which has been discontinued, is that most of the lenses made for it by Canon are lack luster. Two glowing exceptions are the 32mm F1.4 and the 22mm f2 half macro pancake. That very affordable 22mm pancake is my favorite lens regardless of platform and I think is worth owning am ef-f camera just to be able to use it. When getting reference photos in museums discreetly, the 22m with either the m5 or the m50 is the only thing I use. That 5" minimum focus is super helpful. There are several nice primes for the system made by Viltrox and Sigma. The Canon color science is an excellent match for the old m42 takumars.

my favs would be the lumix gf1, light flexible and with adapters any lens will fit, the lumix g10 basically an slr version of the gf1 for when i want an ultralight street camera. the nikon d3000, again light and can be used with almost all nikon lens which i own a lot of and finally the nikon d3300 with double battery holder when i need enlargements bigger than 16x12. lens wise for speed shooting the kit zooms. for quality the olympus and nikon 50mm 1.4 's and that rare vivitar 135 f2.8 nikon fit gives a crispness far exceeding the olympus and nikon versions. Most of my prints are upto 12x10 so the low pixel count isnt a problem what counts to me is the ability to meter and also to go full on sunny 16 manual when required

The Fujifilm X-T2 is a wonderful camera, and I love mine. But it has 24MP not 16. And it has the Trans III sensor. I don’t know how much use I will get out of it though. I just bought an X-T4 because I wanted the IBIS. It had a shutter count of 30 when I bought it, but I’ve been out with it this morning taking shots. I like it! Also I bought the X-H1 a couple weeks ago, also for the IBIS. (In Body Image Stabilization) I like it but it’s a little bit heavier than I expected, and I have a cracked spine. I can still use it, but not quite as long. The X-T4 seems like it’s just right for me. I still have my X-T1 also. When I think about selling it I find it hard to do. I wouldn’t get that much for it anyway, and then I wouldn’t have it. 😂 I took some pics with my Sony A7 II the other day and it felt kind of clunky compared to the Fuji cameras. I may sell that one. But then I wouldn’t have a full frame camera. A man does need a full frame camera, just in case. Plus, I already have some adapters for that camera.
Nigel!!! The audio on this video is terrible! It sounds like you’re in a bass boombox echo chamber. I had to keep the volume very low, or it would make the speakers rattle in my TV. Other than that, I liked it of course. I always like your videos. Maybe if you plugged a microphone into your filming camera and put it close to you, it would get rid of some of that room echo. Or you could go back into the room with furniture in it. But I know, you don’t want another Cuban missile crises. 😂 Carry on Mr. Zen!

Owned 3 Sony bodies, the original A7 which is a fantastic budget option now and can be had for under £400, the A7ii which can now also be had for under £500 and the original A7S, again available under £500. Of the 3, the A7S was my favourite and is a phenomenal stills camera if paired with vintage lenses. 12mp is more than enough and the sharpness and resolution were excellent. The A7S is not a camera if you're a heavy crop in post type shooter. The body shape on the original Sony A7 mark 1's also handle better in my opinion. Still shoot the X-Pro1, and even today it delivers stunning results that I'm more than happy with. The sensor holds up really well and I often pair the camera with the 18mm f2 which I love to bits. Never really got on iwth the XT bodies, even though they are comfortable to use and the EVFs are excellent. I've really developed a thing for CCD sensors, so bagged a very cheap Pentax K10D which delivers stunning results. But my main everyday carry is now the Leica M9. Increasingly I do feel like cameras are becoming more like computers and I got a bit sick to death of it, so decided to strip right back. Just the M9 and X-Pro1 and I'm more than happy.

Canon 5D and 5DII: focussing is slow in these cameras so never the best if you're shooting action and your frames per second count will be low. But M42 lenses and focus? Be sure to buy a mount adapter which has a focus alert LED and you focus point WILL flash red when you hit focus. It may cost a few £ more but it's entirely worth it for the success rate. Tell me though, how the 'ell did we all manage before "focus peaking"?

If you have the latest firmware in your X-E2, you essentially have an X-T1. Not a bad “upgrade”. I had an X-E2 along with my X-T1. Both great cameras, but I preferred the SLR styling of the X-T1, and still have it today.

Using a full frame camera will give the image just as on 35mm film, but that isn't necessarily a good thing in and of itself. You do lose a bit of the edges but as the others have pointed out, that reduces vignetting, gives you the sharper part of the image, and if you prefer longer lenses as I tend to do, increasing the reach a bit isn't a bad thing. I don't think full frame is an absolute necessity, and find that plenty of vintage character comes through on aps-c. I shoot vintage lenses on full frame to show their characteristics for the show, but I shoot them on aps-c all the time!

I just bought a Nikon D800 for $500 and a Canon 5D III for $700. Legendary cameras for awesome prices and great for vintage lenses too

Although quite old I am new to digital photography and spend far too much time watching RUclips videos rather than getting out and 'snapping' away (I do have an excuse at the moment). Anyway I have watched many of your videos and really enjoy them, I think I have learned stuff from your laid back style. You, and others to be fair, refer to the colour rendition from the various sensors out there which I don't really understand. Are you referring to how the image appears on the lcd screen of the camera, the computer monitor or the printed out version. Wouldn't this rely upon the quality of the computer monitor or the printer as much as upon the camera itself? Or is it solely as to how the image appears on social media be it You Tube, Facebook, Instagram etc. Sorry if I am being thick!

I'm referring to the way the image looks on any medium - camera screen, computer monitor, magazine, anything. Just the look of the image itself as created by the sensor. The same image shot with a bunch of digital cameras would look very different, with a definite identity, and they'd keep that identity no matter where you look. at them. Hope that makes sense!

@@zenography7923 Thanks Nigel, I have a few Fuji's so will have to do a comparison of the different sensor iterations. I do wonder if my old eyes will spot the difference! Haha. Thanks again.

Great video. I'm shopping for a new body, having sold my entire collection before relocating from east coast usa to west coast usa. I could watch more videos like this from this channel. I want to shoot prime AF lenses though. I'm not keen on vintage gear anymore. Used, yes, MF, no.🤔

May have to own 3 camera setups: street (urban), landscape, telephoto macro for shooting insects (2.8/300mm has been the right kit in the past)

My favorite digital cameras were my Olympus cameras. I just wished they would have made Full Frame cameras with that Olympus DNA.

FYI Well, your audio was okay on my phone, not great, which is where I started to watch but not on my regular TV which I use as a 52" monitor and TV, the tin can sound much more pronounced there, running the sound through my stereo receiver and speakers, gave only some improvement over the TV speakers alone. Interesting that the phone seemed to do best. Best wishes. and yes, Panasonic colors need work, but you can make them fine in RAW. Best wishes!

The small size of the a7 is pointless because the lenses are very big.

A fair point, though not all the lenses are huge, and vintage ones fit rather nicely!

I've got an X-Pro 1 and an X-T1 and I really couldn't say which is my favourite. In terms of specifications they are very similar but they are very different in terms of handling and usage.
The optical viewfinder makes framing easier in some circumstances because you can see what's outside the frame. You can also change the OVF angle of view to see even more.

I am going to offend quite a few of your subscribers LOL I really do not get the whole Fujifilm thing, please enlighten me. They are GOOD digital cameras BUT they are NOT made of magic and unicorns hair as some of their proponents would have you believe. The things people say are so great about Fuji like the "film like" X-trans sensor over Bayer, I defy anyone to tell the difference in 2023 especially if "printed". Then the tactile feel of traditional switches and dials, well 95% of people I know with XT3 and 4's they are all set on A and they use the touch screen or command dial. Yes it's cool to have a retro like camera nostalgia trip like the OM10 I shot as a 15 year old in 1982 but that was then and this is now. My present mirrorless camera I can do pretty much everything with index finger and thumb and don't have to take my eye from the EVF. Finally the film emulations ok well I shoot in RAW and you have access to 1000+ filmic looks. I missing something ッ The camera I shoot has a full frame sensor and its AF performance serves Fuji's *** up to it on a plate any guesses?
