Yep same here. Actually built a robot for robot wars, similar to hypnodisc but much more destructive power. We tested it against an old car engine: ripped to the engine to pieces and scattered large chunks of metal at high speed across a wide area. Took it to Nottingham studios for filming and they rejected it as too powerful and being a whole 2kg overweight😡😡🤬
It's completely unproductive but you have to love the boat buoys style leaving everything to the last minute and responding to it with 'Well I'm going on holiday tomorrow', then summing up their chances with 'Land? pretty crap, offroad? pretty crap, water? well....it doesn't float', its so funny
So much silliness and fun... 🙃 And to think: they could have had the Bad Obsession Motorsport boys [project Binky on RUclips], who'd have spent the first 8 years of the 5-week build fabricating world-class brackets... Proper job!😁

This was enormously popular on cable TV here in Serbia, it even inspired my friend to start working on some awkward vehicle she hopes to finish and register some day as her take on 1930s cars built from parts found in scrapyards. She's a trans woman with background in engineering and one of my favourite crazy neighbours. Her vehicular contraption started life as chasis of an old Dodge 3/4 ton pickup truck that she retrofitted Mercedes W124 engine into, grille and arched fenders from Yugoslav FAP 13 truck, steering wheel and column from a late 50s Opel Rekord, hood ornament from a Lincoln, hand made bonnet connected to the firewall of the same FAP 13 truck and windscreen frame from some crappy wedding car that imitates 1930s aesthetics. Seats are temporarily fitted from that Dodge truck as bench seats are impossible to find here. How it would look in the end and how on earth would it get registered I don't have a clue, but I can't wait to see "Scrappy Races Transgendercedes Benz" as she named it blasting down the road with air horns from shunting locomotive and her big schnauzer in the passenger seat....
I loved Scrapheap challenge and Scrappy Racers, but most of all...I want that sidecar. For me to buy a sidecar, new, here in South Australia, is more expensive than my motorbike. But I love the chair, so much fun to ride.
I thought it was a Ford GT bonnet going by the shape of the headlight holes? but i think you could be right as thinking back the Ford GT was alot wider comparied to Dodge Viper bonnet
A hovercraft is the obvious solution to this challenge, but I assume the road legality is the real reason they're not allowed to do them. Hovercraft are great over just about all terrain types and the only thing they really struggle with are steep inclines. There is a certain amount of complexity to building the skirt for them, but if you get that right then the rest of the engineering is relatively simple, and even the engines on them are typically very simple
the pump needs opening up on the tractor.... not enuff black smoke.. you know when you have it right when the eco bug has to put its fog lights on when following

I'm no car mechanic but that Beetle looks damn solid for 300 pounds. And with their weight problem and clever brains, couldn't they make a mid-engined Beetle? I mean, you can probably plop the third crewmember in the original engine's place with a bit of luck.
(TL;DR Air cooled engines suck) The engine used in the original beetle the VW E motor was air cooled which means that it was prone to overheating not only to the point of engine damage but if it gets above its normal operating tempature it uses more fuel and oil as well as creating more emissions it also doesn't have a catalytic converter so all of the exhaust create by the engine is vented directly to the atomosphere. The beetle also requires leaded fuel I assume considering its age which is another chemical going out the engine. Also while amazing at the time they generally only got 25mpg on the highway. Like any older car it creates a lot of excess emissions on start up. Also beetles on start up often spit oil which is another thing most beetles were recommend to run SAE 30 instead of a multi-weight oil which is less effective at protecting components when it heats up which may cause damage and excess emissions. Also engines were not designed to control emissions at this point just to get exhaust out, which means they created a lot of them to begin with not to speak of the lack of filtering.
my dad had a beetle for 15 years, it never had a single problem... then he bought a new car and the beetle just sat there for another 20 years... it just needed a new battery, oil and gasoline - started running from first try
