- Someone said they would love to see our willow beds so here, in this video, you can have a look at our sally garden in early spring (march 2020). I also take you into other parts, the vegetable growing part, of our garden.
we grow our own willow for basket making and have been for the last 15 years. We have 20 different varieties of willow selected for suitability for making baskets.
I am a full-time basket maker and artist living in Tipperary, Ireland with my family. Off-grid in the forest on a mountain.

Hi Hanna, Good to have you back again, we have missed you but now we’ve got our sunshine back .........and spring is here and summer is on the way ...........thanks for the tour of the sally gardens, they look to be in good shape. Good to see you well and happy, as you should be . Don’t go making a stranger of yourself, we want you back.......don’t take our sunshine away. Kindest regards. Brendan .
Hi Brendan, delighted to hear you are well too! Love h
Hanna I absolutely love this video. You live my kind of life. We have a smallholding with horses, donkeys, goat and a highland cow called Rosie. I have a two acre paddock which we don't use and have been doing lots of research into growing willow as I have so many ideas and can't wait to get started. Your video made me feel so peaceful, it's really lovely. Keep up the good work :)
Oh thanks so much, so happy it resonated. Much love H
Thank you Hanna. Glad to see you are all doing well! As always, you've brightened our day.
You are so welcome!
Thank you, dearest Hanna. The farm looks nice, and spring looks good on you.
Hi Jim, thank you!
Thank you for the lovely tour
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you Hanna welcome back and stay safe!
Thank you! Will do!
Wow your family has really done a ton of work to your property! I love it!
Thank you so much!
Thank you!
Just wonderful. Love to see willow beds.
You're welcome!
Hi Hanna, our family really enjoy your videos. We love seeing your polytunnel! A wee video tour of what's growing in there would definitely interest us, as well as hearing more about your watering solutions :)
Hi Laura, Lovely to hear you and your family enjoy my video's. I would love to make a video about what's growing in the polytunnel, great idea! And the pond for our watering will be in a future one too. Thanks for the encouragement!
Is there a video on the tunnel shown last here with the fruit trees. I’d love to know more. Thank you!
Hi Hanna
so glad to be able to make this virtual tour in your garden.. Really impressive!
Now I also realized it is way too long ago since we visited you the last time..
It feels so good to see you, Jef and our hard-working Victor and Mara again! (did I miss Johanna in the movie? :-))
Looking forward to visit you again!
Warm hugs to you and the entire family!
Bart
Hi Bartje, good to be chatting here (and in English!) Would love to see you too again, hopefully soon. Joanna was featured only briefly, only her hands cutting the tarp. Send my love to everyone! hugs xxx
The willow beds look very wet. I am guessing the trenches are to drain the beds of excess water?
Doe you do anything to collect and store water in any way?
Two questions please! What growing zone are you in and how do I start a stump?! I'm in zone 6a in the US, Ohio to be exact, and have an area where I would LOVE to grow willow to harvest as well as a living fence. Thanks! LOVE your channel!
Not sure what growing zone we are, we're in Ireland. To start planting willow you need cuttings from a living willow tree and push them into the soil. That's it. Look up Dunbargardens in the USA for cuttings next year.
Looks like they are about 1 foot apart on all sides? I am low on space being on a quarter acre lot. All i have is along my back fence. I thought I’d do 6 rows 6 inches apart on all sides. Is this too close?
Yes that should work. It does depend on varieties though. I grow some of them further apart when the variety is vigorous. What varieties do you have?
Dark dicks, dicky meadows, Flanders red, packing twine, irette and Rubykins
I think Rubykins and dicky meadows are pretty vigorous?
Hello! I’m wondering what varieties you think would work best for creating a living fence?
I love viminalis for these projects, but other strong growing varieties work well too. Like Brown Maul, Harrison and Flanders red
@@HannaVanAelst thank you so much Hanna!! I really appreciate it. Your videos are such an inspiration!
Hi Hanna! Where do you source your willow varieties in Ireland?
I have been collecting and trialing basket willow for years. I started with varieties from the Organic Centre in Leitrim. Then I expanded and got cuttings from other makers over the years.
And keep an eye out for next planting season, I will be selling cuttings!
Glad you are well and nice to see the farm. By the way...I’m Valerie of @mysistersfarmtn over on Instagram..I follow you there too 😊 I apologize for asking if you’ve already mentioned this in another video, but are there willows that are better for weaving than others? What varieties do you grow? I’ll have my first willows this year. Maybe some for floral designers and maybe some for weavers. I’m really excited to see how they do.
Hi Valerie, yes there are specific basket making willow varieties. I have made a video on the varieties that are my favourites. You can find it by searching my channel. Great to hear you also started growing them. Exciting times!
Hanna Van Aelst thank you! I will find that video.
