Fun Fact: Debbie Reynolds was just 19 when she did this film - the same age her daughter Carrie Fisher was when she did Star Wars!
The talent passes down
Thank you. I was going to write the same. Fabulous family talent. Being 19 too! Wow!!
Debbie Reynolds was 18 when she made SitR. The film came out when she was 19. Carrie Fisher was 19 when she made _Star Wars_ and 20 when the film was released.
@@leighwhite6700 And the sorrow. When Carrie died suddenly in 2016, her mother died the next day--she was overcome with grief. So her son Todd arranged not one funeral but two--and lost both his closest family members at a single 24-hour period.
That’s right, Debbie Reynolds is Carrie Fisher’s mother, or better yet Princess Leia‘s mother, lol
You said, "Kathy was darling. What else was she in?" News flash: she became a HUGE star, and was in movies the rest of her life. She is Carrie Fisher's mother.
I loved her in the '60s Tammy beach movies!
If You Want To See Another Classic Debbie Reynolds Film, I'd Recommend THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN!!
I love Debbie's resurgence later I'm life in Mother and In and Out!
@@elessartelcontar9415 She only did the first one. Sandra Dee replaced her.
@@jamesedwards2483 +1 for Molly Brown. Cassie and Carly would LOVE it!
Your face when Lena first started speaking is PRICELESS--and I'm sure it's the exact same face millions of us first made the first time we heard her speak, too.
Jean Hagen didn't really sound like that...she was great.
Debbie Reynolds was only 18 when they filmed this movie. She said that by the end of shooting the Good Morning number that her feet were bleeding.
And what can you say about Cyd Charisse!!! She had to smoke a cigarette during her number, but she had never smoked in her life. So they took a few hours for her to learn to smoke. She did the number, and she said she never smoked again. What an elegant, and lovely lady Cyd was!
A very smart lady not to ever smoke again.
Some people never pick up the habit, even when they try.
My mom told me about her college days. She tried smoking so she could fit in, because everybody was. She kept at it for a whole month before she gave up - she just couldn't get hooked on nicotine.
She was 19 when they filmed it. The same age as her daughter, Carrie Fisher, was when they filmed, STAR WARS.
19, actually.
@@trekkiejunk I already corrected him.
Don't deprive yourself of "my fair lady" you will LOVE it
My late grandma’s favorite
Yeah, wow. If she hasn't seen that one she really needs to.
One of Audry Hepburns best no denying that and Cassie loved Roman Holiday
A great movie you ought to watch !
Like "Singin' In the Rain," "My Fair Lady" is a musical for people who don't like musicals. But No. 1 on that list would have to be "Cabaret." If you ever wondered why Liza Minelli was considered a big star, "Cabaret" will answer that for you. Plus, Joel Grey is sublime.
Ahem, where was I? "My Fair Lady": so many great tunes!
Donald O'Connor steals the show with the iconic Make the Laugh one of the greatest scenes in classic Hollywood
The whole number is one long take. And he had to shoot it twice. Something technical went wrong the first time, and the film was ruined, so he had to do the whole thing over again.
"Make 'em Laugh." And I agree, his performance of it is wonderful & classic!
@@PhilBagels i think he went to hospital after the take and had to recover
@@Avery_4272 it is so amazing
Fact: This song is based on the song "Be A Clown" from the Movie The Pirate, sung by Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. But of course O'Connor is just unique.
Jean Hagen, the blonde with the screechy voice, actually had a very good voice.
She sang the title song, not Debbie Reynolds. Hagen also won an Oscar for her performance.
The bit of the movie shown in the theater at the end was Hagen's actual voice.
@@cjinasia9266 Nominated, didn't win
I remember her as the woman speeder on Andy Griffith and today Feb. 2 is that anniversary of Gene Kelly's passing in 96. Also the similarities of this and the second Downton Abbey movie are uncanny ;).
In fact, when Kathy is dubbing Lina's speaking voice in the movie, it's actually Jean Hagen's real voice.
Quintessential example of "movie magic". This is a 10/10 picture. The acting, the singing, and of course, the dancing. Timeless.
You left out the humor, which takes it from a middling 7 to a perfect 10.
Gene Kelly performed the iconic rain dance when he had an alarmingly high temperature. Talk about dedication to his craft. ☔❤️
Not to mention that the water they used for rain was mixed with milk, which caused the suit he wore to shrink.
I was going to post the same thing. I agree!
Also true story, reason why so many silent movie stars did not do great when talkies come, they did not have voice to do it, either heavy accents or too high pitch voice.
@@pete_lind That's true and only a handful of them made the transition, Laurel and Hardy being a notable example and of course, the legendary Charlie Chaplin.
Thats why my milk jug keeps shrinking over night in the fridge! @@Shah-of-the-Shinebox
Gene Kelly was a trained experienced dancer, while Debbie Reynolds wasn't, and he admitted later that he was very hard on her during filming and berated her for her mistakes , and was surprised that she still was friendly to him afterwards
Same with Donald O'Connor. They were friends but wouldn't work together on any movie cause of how Kelly could be
The school he learned from they were all about perfection that's why he had that attitude. It's like Jk Simmons in Whiplash
But that's why they shot the serenade after the dancing scenes so she'd feel better hearing him sing to her. That's why her eyes were sparkling when she's on the ladder when he sets the mood lighting
There were times that Debbie had bruises all over her legs because Gene worked her so hard. Debbie later said that during one rehearsal, she ran away and hid under a table on another set so Gene couldn't find her.
However, she *was* found…by Fred Astaire, who kindly taught her all the steps, no trouble at all. (Of course, Fred wasn't dealing with having *his* film depending on a complete novice learning the steps, but still.)
@@Jessica_Roth That started out as a terrible story and ended up as a great story. Based on that story, I would think Debbie and Fred would be lifelong friends. I have no idea, of course.
@charlize1253
Gene Kelly was a perfectionist. Perfectionists are hard on others and even harder on themselves. For others, it`s always difficult to work with such people. It must have been a nightmare for Debbie, but Gene and Fred taught her a lot. Her performance was fantastic.
Fred Astaire was also a perfectionist but a kinder one. Kelly could be brutal.
She said they had so many takes of the _Good mornin'_ number that her feet were bleeding.
Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and her mom, Debbie Reynolds, died 1 day apart, Carrie on Dec 27, 2016 and Debbie on Dec 28, 2016.
Carrie had a heart attack 4 days earlier on an airplane and per her brother, Debbie died from heartbreak a day after Carrie. At least they had 1 last Christmas
together. Debbie loved Christmas so much that she kept her Christmas tree up year round. RIP two great ladies.
There was an excellent HBO documentary called "Bright Lights" about their relationship. It had to be held back when the ladies passed away, but I saw it in 2017. Definitely worth a watch.
but you didn't tell her where she might know them from, but still cool stats
And George Michael died on Dec 25 2016. Some really sad days.
I adore this movie.
I can't overstate how much I love Cosmo.
The songs were all from the period- most from the 1920’s and 1930’s. “Singin’ in the Rain” was written in 1929 and has been a standard performed by hundreds of singers, dancers and celebrities over the decades. 😊
I think it was written for the Hollywood review of 1929, where was sung by Cliff Edwards AKA Jiminy Cricket.
all the songs were written by arthur freed and nacio herb brown back in the 20s except for make em laugh
freed went on to become a producer at mgm and produced singin in the rain
@@halcromwell9030*revue
Could be wrong but I think "Make Them Laugh" was an "original" song for the movie as they re-worked the lyrics of a song called "Be a Clown".
@@motleykingdom9394 Yes! “Written by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown, the song is closely based on Cole Porter's "Be a Clown" from the Freed-produced 1948 MGM musical film The Pirate, in which it was sung by Gene Kelly and Judy Garland.” “Although Cole Porter had reason to bring suit, he never sued for copyright infringement.”
“Songwriter and MGM "Freed unit" producer Arthur Freed used his own library of songs written with Nacio Herb Brown as the basis for the musical film Singin' in the Rain.” “Co-director Stanley Donen referenced the Cole Porter song "Be a Clown" from the film The Pirate, and further suggested that Freed and Brown compose a song using this as their inspiration.”
Gene Kelly asked Donald O'Connor to do the somersault off the wall because he had seen O'Connor do that in a dance number years before. But O'Conner hadn't done it in years and was a heavy smoker, so when he did it for the movie he said it nearly killed him!
I had written a long comment about this. I was captivated by how he could rush a wall while dancing, dance nearly to the ceiling up a vertical wall, flip and never miss a step dancing.
It’s one of my favorite dance routines ever, and Donald O’Connor is amazing, but if you look closely, you’ll see they used a bit of movie magic there. On both backflips, the surface isn’t quite vertical. First he uses the board (which is made to look as if it’s just leaning there, but if course was firmly anchored). Then, when he uses the back wall, the perspective and the picture on it make it look vertical, but again it’s slightly leaning to make it function more like a ramp.
Still an absolutely stellar routine, and it’s hard to believe O’Connor smoked four or five packs of cigarettes per day back then. But if dancers were to try that on a truly vertical wall, they’d probably injure themselves badly.
Singing in the rain. Great musical. West Side Story, another great musical, but my all time favorite musical is, “Paint your Wagon” Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin singing, not great, but that movie is hilarious.
The dancer in the Broadway Melody sequence was Cyd Charisse, who was also in Brigadoon with Gene Kelly and The Band Wagon with Fred Astaire.
Also Zelda was Rita Moreno, who was in the movie 80 For Brady last year. She's 92.
I know Rita best as Anita in West Side Story, which is ALSO highly recommended
Brigadoon is one of my favorite movies. I watch at least every other month.
And Cyd also did another movie with Gene Kelly called it’s always Fair weather
@@thomasbradley4505 oh my God Van Johnson is hilarious in that
As a kid, Donald O'Connor was one of my favorite movie stars NOT for "Singing in the Rain" but for "Francis" (1950). Donald O'Connor plays a WWII Lt. who is sent to a psychiatric ward when he insists that an Army mule named Francis can speak to him. Western star Chill Wills was the voice of Francis. The movie was so popular that there was a total of 7 movies with "Francis the Talking Mule".
I saw probably ALL of those Francis movies as a kid with my father. Still love them.
Yes! I loved the Francis movies
I love the Francis the Talking Mule movies!
I loved Donald. He was married twice. The first time he married an abusive woman and after almost a decade they divorced. He married again in 1956, and he and his new wife had 3 children. They were married until his death in 2003. For Hollywood marriage, that was forever.
Yep I was a huge Francis the talking mule fan too. 😊
Fun fact: when she came out of the cake and he made fun of her by saying look it's Ethel Barrymore. Ethel Barrymore was Drew Barrymores great aunt.
ethel barrymore was known as first lady of the american theater
thats the joke
@@anthonytee6798 I know that.
Gene Kelly was a perfectionist. He once guest starred on "The Muppet Show" and Kermit asked him if he would do his famous rain dance. Gene said no because he was afraid he wouldn't be able to repeat his perfect performance from "Singin' in the Rain" and didn't want to ruin the illusion for his fans.
Also, that Kathy dubbing for Lena was actually dubbed by a singer named Betty Noyes! I've watched this a hundred times and I still maintain that the "Moses Supposes" scene is one of the most enjoyable dance sequences I've seen.
Jean Hagen (Lena) actually dubbed her own voice of the speaking parts.
😊
Actually, Kelly was gracious enough to just stroll, umbrella in hand, down the Muppets' re-creation of the rainy street. 😉
Betty Noyes dubbed the singing for Lena, but Jean Hagen (Lena Lamont) actually dubbed Debbie Reynolds dubbing Lena's speaking voice. .
Here's a random fact, Betty Noyes also sang Baby Mine from Dumbo!
The Singing in the Rain part might be the greatest thing ever put on film. It’s just perfect.
So perfect that Kelly once refused to repeat it on t.v. He said if he couldn't get it right again, his fans would never forget it.
And Kelly did that number while sick with a pretty high fever, from what I’ve long read/heard. He really pulled it off.
a movie about delusionality and projection
these two know NOTHING about each other - their romance is as fake as the rain
This movie simply makes me happy. It has ever since I was a kid. The humor employed here is similar to many of Gene Kelly's movies as well as the Fred and Ginger movies and is something that is missing in modern cinema.
Every song in this movie, came from another movie. The script writers were basically handed a list of songs from a bunch of different movies, then challenged to write a screen play that included them all.
It's funny, just the other day, I casually wondered to my sister, "Wonder if the reactors will ever get to Singin' In The Rain?"
I grew up on old musicals. It is not abnormal, for example, for my sisters and I to get into "Moses Supposes" in Walmart. Embarrasses the hell out of my wife, lol. She just doesn't get it 🤣
Moses Supposes is a banger. You've got a good family.
@@Dudeman23rd Lol, for the longest time, my wife thought I made that shit up 🤣 Finally, I found a clip on RUclips to show her.
I thought musicals were all original songs until Cassie did White Christmas and everyone say it didn't come from the movie. Lol. I know Moulin Rouge did the same...but at least they were remixed versions.
Actually, Moses Supposes is the one song original to this movie.
@@rpg7287 🤦🏻♂️Doh! Yes, of course, you are correct. That'll learn me to act like I know something, when I'm fighting a flu with high fever 😬🤣
My parents were older so a lot of the movies I grew up on aren’t represented on reaction channels. I always get excited to see more people experience my favorites like Singin in the Rain and It Happened One Night!! Film history is so fun to delve into
Dylan, Check out Dawn Marie's reaction channel. Scottish Lady who watch a lot of old classics like the Marx Brothers and Billy Wilder movies. I'm the one who's older and I grew up on the old classics. It was great to see Cassie watch this one. Hope her patreons convince her to watch a few others!
@@caldwellkelley3084 thanks so much for the recommendations!
Movies with Mia is another great RUclips channel for classic movie reactions.
Sunset Boulevard is another terrific movie about the impact of the switch from silent films to talkies, an all-time classic!
I was just about to suggest the same move for the same reason! Another older, classic movie about the same subject, but definitely not a musical. It's a great movie!
One of the all-time greatest films, but unlike "Singin' In the Rain", as serious as a heart attack.
Agreed, let's recommend that one for Cassie to watch as well!
Also The Artist with Jean Dujardin!
I'd love to see her watch this one! Top tier film.
This is one of my favorite musicals. The singing in the rain scene is, of course, perfection. Gene Kelly is so handsome that every time I watch that scene I think "Golly, what a lucky lamp post."
There's a mural of the lamp post scene in my hometown, and it makes me smile every time I walk by - it just evokes such joy!
He had good arms too. Curious if dancing works the biceps...? That might be a dumb question I don't know.
Very nostalgic movie to me, watched it as a kid. Gotta say, that whole Gene Kelly Fred Astaire showmanship.... today I feel like it's a lost art. It's like you said, let's see those tiktok dancers do that. The choreography, the moves, the singing, the months of endless practice... those guys were inhuman to be able to give us all that in such a seamless way.
Oh my goodness! Cassie, you're going to burst with joy! AND, you get to see Princess Leia's mom sing and dance. Hard to believe that you are just now seeing this. Could The Sound of Music be too far behind?
Cassie said she grew up watching Sound of Music because that was her mom's favourite movie. She grew up mostly watching comedies and rom coms.
This is why she has not seen so many movies from other genres.
@@francescathomas3502 i made the comment before i watched the reaction.
"The Jazz Singer" was a musical, and the first sound movie.
Singin' In The Rain is one of the 10 greatest American films of all time. How many movies have this kind of life and energy?? CGI be damned!! Kelly, Reynolds and O'Connor are like cartoons come to life. "Make 'Em Laugh" is one of the best big screen musical numbers ever committed to film. Debbie Reynolds at 19 was put through the ringer to get her scenes right but she never let's it show on the screen. What a picture!!
The incredible thing about the dancing in the rain number is that Gene Kelly was SICK, with a temp of over 101, I believe, when it was filmed. What a trooper. Love this film!!!
I volunteered for the spay/neuter clinics in Montana for a long time. We catered to low income. A lot of people in the towns we would go to would give us a room for the nights we had to be there. Anyway, one time this woman offered her house up, she was out of town and knew one of the women also volunteering. I went in and there was this amazing wall of pictures. I looked at them and thought wait... isn't that Gene Kelly? I asked the woman and she said yeah, he's her grandfather. Amazing photos of family over the years. Another good musical romance from the 50s is "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".
I'll second that recommendation, Seven Brides for Seven brothers is great.
I hate seven brides for seven brothers with a passion. It is terrible.
@purpleslog I wasn't much into the story, but the dancing was incredible!
@@torontomame Fair enough. It was the story line that turned me off. I’m usually ok with the story lines for musicals which can be shallow or overly silly. But a musical based on the Roman founding myth story “The Rape of Sabine Women” was too much for me. I couldn’t get past the story to enjoy the singing and dancing. It also blinded me to your cool story about Gene Kelly’s grand daughter. I only had one brush with a musical star. I’ll save that for if/when Cassie covers one of those movies.
@@purpleslog That was my experience with Kelly's granddaughter's house. Just a nod to some other old musicals. We were talking old musicals. The film is an older musical. Yeah, likely based on your reference, but hey, it's entertainment.
This was my mom's favorite movie. In the early 2000s there was a movie festival over that summer where a theater showed one classic movie a week for the entire summer. One week was Singing in the Rain.
I took my mom to one of the showings. She had the biggest smile on her face all through the movie.
Justice for Cosmo!
Glad you finally saw it. Make sure your sister sees it too. It’s an all-time favorite, a perfect movie.
I'm team Cosmo, always! He's just the cutest. The fact that he doesn't have girls in droves pining after him will forever be a mystery to me!
In the first draft of the movie, Cosmo was one of those guys who would take advantage of girls trying to get into the movies. They cleaned up his character but you should still assume he's not trying to attract the girls who want to u married.
My mom used to use the “I can’t stand em” line all the time- imitating the nasally voice.
It is a favorite quote of my brother and I 🙂
Me too! 😂
This is my favourite musical. I watch it two or three times a year and never got bored. The Moses Supposes scene is just a joy to watch, Gene and Donald were SO talented.
Cyd Charisse wore that green dress and did those moves just weeks after giving birth.
This is why there was a golden Hollywood period. Large casts, real sets, no CGI and fantastic singing and dancing talent.
You are now entering a universe way richer than the MCU, the musicals of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Imagine that these actors had to act, dance, and sing without AutoTune. The sheer talent of these people far surpassed anything we see in stars today.
I grew up watching musicals due to my mom's love for them. This is one of the more memorable ones. My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Oklahoma, The King And I, The Sound Of Music and this one were among her favorites.
Donald O Conner had to go to the hospital for exhaustion after filming the Make 'em Laugh sequence.
And the cameras weren't set up correct so he had to do it all again.
And he was a HEAVY smoker
And multiple bruises and what not, I'm guessing. That floor's concrete...
"What came first the movie or the song?" The song, actually! It was written in the 1920s, when this movie is set! ☺Most of the songs in "Singin' in the Rain" were pre-existing. The vast majority were written by Arthur Freed, who had been producing & writing songs for the studio's movie musicals since the 1920s. (So, the movie is almost a mini-tribute to those early musicals).
Cosmo is my favourite too ☺ ♥. He's played by Donald O'Connor 🌟.
A most delightful film that’s right up your alley, Cassie. If you ever get the chance to, catch a rerelease of this in the theaters as it is marvelous on a big screen. My favorite musical number is Moses Supposes. And man, does it get me to cry every time, the line “Ladies and Gentlemen! Stop that girl! That girl running up the aisle! Stop her! That’s the girl whose voice you heard and loved tonight! She's the real star of the picture! Kathy Selden!” followed by that look that Debbie Reynolds had with the tears in her eyes.
It Happened One Night is my FAVORITE movie. ❤
Love that movie too! Did you know it was also done as a radio show? Lux Radio Show. Something like that. Anyway, all the stars from the movie were in the radio version. Do a google search.
The same.
One of the great comedies and the first to bag all the major five Oscars.
It Happened One Night was way ahead of its time. One of my favorites too. It’s held up so well.
Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire are considered the greatest male dancers of classic Hollywood. Any film you see with either of them in it, will have the most innovative and technically perfect dance sequences.
She should watch Top Hat next! I think she'll love Fred & Ginger!
Unfortunately, they only ever worked together once, on the segment the Babbitt and the Bromide for the sketch film Ziegfeld Follies.
@@springerjkreb That's right! Well, until That's Entertainment!
One of my favorite Astaire movies was the bio pic "Three Little Words" with Vera Ellen.
@@jeffreycody5217 Really? That's an odd one that I like too. Lol
All the actors are great in this classic. But Donald O`Connor as Cosmo, and Jean Hagen as Lina are just so funny
SINGIN' and AMERICAN IN PARIS... Robert Preston's MUSIC MAN and then his most excellent VICTOR VICTORIA, which I'd stack up again the best of comedies.
Victor Victoria 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The Music Man was the first musical I ever saw as a kid....it was on TV and my Dad loved the music and wanted us kids to see it. There have been better musicals, and so many worse, but The Music Man will always be my favorite.
Poor Debbie Reynolds was repeatedly made to rehearse the dance to "Good Morning" by Gene Kelly, a self admitted perfectionist. By the end, her feet were bleeding.
Ginger Rogers also had bleeding feet after a dance duet she did with the perfectionist, Fred Astaire due to all the rehearsals.
I recall something like this statement: before "Star Wars", Carrie Fisher was Debbie Reynolds' daughter. After "Star Wars", Debbie Reynolds was Princess Leia's mother.
I'm 55, grew up in the 70's and 80's. I was exposed to the older movies as well as the current ones at the time.
The fact that we didn't have as many ways to view movies at the time played a factor, but also having parents that were teens at the time these great movies were made in the late 40's early 50's helped too.
Please react to more Danny Kaye movies. Not only was he a beloved comical genius, but a true humanitarian as well.
Take care and be well. 😊
Debbie Reynolds starred in this blockbuster at the age of 19. Her daughter Carrie Fisher starred in Star Wars at the age of 19. Love to both of them.
False and irrelevant anyway
@@docsavage8640 What's false about it?
It is a fact that after Carrie passed away, Debbie was so heartbroken that she passed a day or two later. 😢
@@docsavage8640 No, that's completely true. Go look it up.
Greetings Cassie
Kathy is played by Debbie Reynolds. She was a Tripple Threat actress: singing, acting, dancing. She is also the mother of Carrie Fisher.
During the 'Singing in the Rain' scene, Gene was suffering from a high temperature from the flue, but ever the constant overachiever, he struggled to complete it. I read somewhere that it took about 25 to 30 takes to get it just right. You can kind of hear it in his singing voice when he gets on the light pole.
Anyways, glad you enjoy it, and you might get around to watching some of the others of this era of Hollywood musicals. Maybe you can get Carly to join for 1 of them. Have a great 1.
I love these kinds of old musicals! They're so sweet and innocent and fun when these days we live in a world where everyone tries to make things dark and depressing and dark and violent and dark and cynical. And did I mention dark? Even comedies these days try to be too clever or have a lot of a kind of bitterness at their base.
Sometimes we just need a bit of true fun .
Two interesting behind-the -scenes facts:
1: The Good Mornin' dance scene took around 14 hours to film, and by the end it actually caused burst blood vessels in Debbie Reynolds' feet.
2: During the filming of the Singin' in the Rain dance scene, Gene Kelly was very sick, with a fever of 103°, and the water used in the scene caused his wool suit to shrink.
I loved this movie as a young kid about 5 years old. I first saw and loved Donald O'Connor when he starred in the B&W Francis the Talking Mule series of 5 movies.
I highly recommend them. Donald and Francis got into all kinds of zany trouble. The 5 movies were all set in WWII overseas. I was also fascinated by WWII as a 5 year old
to the point it made me wonder about reincarnation! One of the things he did that I had never seen is that HE COULD DANCE UP A VERTICAL WALL for several feet like gravity didn't apply! He would rush a wall at speed and nearly reach the ceiling while dancing on the wall! He did a flip off the wall and when he hit the floor was still dancing. You have to see it.
And James Cagney in Yankee Doodle! 0:06
In The Full Monty, one of the 'strippers' in audition said he could do the Donald O'Connor up-the-wall bit and basically just slammed into it. Brave try.
When I was a little boy, my mom used to say to me "Moses supposes his toeses are roses, but Moses supposes erroneously." I never knew where she got that until I saw this movie. 😁
Gene Kelly & Donald O'Connor were arguably two of the best dancers to ever grace the silver screen. And they could sing too.
One cool fact is that since this film was made only 30 years after thw switch to sound, there were still crew around who remembered what it was like. The scene where they were having microphone issues was from a story they were told.
Whenever it rains, I couldn’t help but sing this song.
By the way, the actress who played Kathy Selden in this movie is Debbie Reynolds, who is the mother of Carrie Fisher ( Princess Leia ).
May they R.I.P.
Her actual voice broke me up…
"let's see the tik tok dancers do that one"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
since on the topic i would like to add the mary poppins roof scene to the list
Debbie Reynolds had said that Gene Kelly was really hard on her during the shooting of this movie. Because he was a very accomplished dancer and she had never danced before. Fred Astaire, who was in an adjacent dance studio, found her crying under a piano and reassured her that all of her hard work was worth the effort.
There are many films that are called "classics," but only a few are truly so. These are the ones that set the bar for the rest. _Casablanca_ is one. And so is _Singing in the Rain._ Perfection is rare, but it sometimes happens.
A fun watch would be...'That's Entertainment'......which is a whole compilation of song & dance numbers from the golden age of musicals.
The editing was so well done for this. It was cohesive, the musical numbers still flowed and somehow at 30 minutes it didn't feel like it was missing anything. Kudos to the editor! 👏
I know it's inevitable to avoid violating copyright...still I couldn't help wincing a bit for how the edits destroyed those beautiful, perfect numbers! 😥😥😥....
I would recommend Yankee Doodle Dandy, a 1949 musical starring James Cagney. As a small child I watched it repeatedly. There was a tv station in NY that would show the same picture every day for a week at the same time so Dad sat me in front of it and I watched the clock the rest of the week. Cagney plays George M. Cohan, a Broadway song and dance man. Cohan was also a composer. It wasn’t until the week was over that Dad told me Cagney was also famous for playing gangsters. So I got treated to him being a killer. In that genre I would recommend White Heat. One of the things Dad told me was that in old Hollywood just having one talent wasn’t good enough. They wanted people who could act, AND dance, AND sing.
When the screenwriters came up with the idea for making the story about the transition between silent film and talking pictures, there were still many technicians, etc, who were able to fill in details anoit the time.
It was also true that there were many actors and actresses because of accents or their voices simply not matching their appearances.
Hollywood studios resisted for years to convert to sound movies because of the expense of converting every movie theater in the country to sound. When Hollywood finally decided to convert to sound pictures one studio made every player it had under contract to stand under a microphone and recite a nursery rhyme to test their voices.
Oh, wow - I used to sing the 'good morning' song to my daughter to wake *her* up! She was not amused. :D
Just a super-fun movie.
Classic musicals to select from. The Music Man, Paint your Wagon (a singing Clint Eastwood), Oklahoma (with mama Partridge), Bye, Bye Birdie (with Dick van Dyke and Ann Marget)
Carousel, Brigadoon, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. . .
West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, 1776, Guys and Dolls

There were two male dancers who stood head and shoulders above all others in Hollywood, and they were diametrically different in their styles. Fred Astaire was known as "The Ace" because he was near perfection in everything he did. He was lean and moved like greased lightning. Gene Kelly was more athletic and physical in his movements and, like Astaire, was a perfectionist in every movement. Donald O'Connor was one of very few who could keep up with Kelly. The "Rain Dance" is one of the very best of all-time, maybe the best, because it was pure joy in physical movement. You should watch some of Fred's dances, because they were not only incredible in precision, but unique in that only Astaire could do them. His frequent partner, Ginger Rogers, was equally spectacular ... it has been said that she matched his moves in heels and oft time backwards. Debbie carved out a whole career with this performance, and she was always a treat onn camera. So much fun watching you watch this. You just opened the door to a new and wonderous world, are you going to step into it?
CHICAGO was a very good musical.
I love those old movies from the 50s that I would see on TV when I was a little kid sick home from school in the 70s and this is one of my favorites.
Donald O'Connor, who played Cosmo in this film, has always been one of my favorites. He has been in many movies and was an excellent dancer, as good as Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire.
Cyd Charisse is another favorite of mine. She was the seductive woman in green dress w the gangsters and the long flowing white dress in the Gotta Dance sequence.
Gene Kelly was one of THE men of old Hollywood, dancer, singer, director, choreographer, stunt man, he did it all. As for Kathy actor Debbie Reynolds she went on to star in multiple amazing films and became a Disney icon when she starred in Halloweentown (one series to watch). Loved watching this film with my gran growing up. Awesome reaction as always.
Gene Kelly actually touched ("blessed") my now ex-fiancee's ballet slippers from when she was about 3 years old. Her parents had them bronzed afterwards.
When you said "my grandma used to sing this to me to wake me up", just warmed my heart
The energy of the actors back then was endless
The titular song, and the way it's performed in the movie, might be the best depiction of new love in film history. The way he is oblivious to the weather and giddy with excitement really comes across in the sequence. Good movie to start the month with Cassie.
The song came before the movie. This movie used a lot of existing songs. It is one of the greatest, and my personal favourite musical of all time. Glad you watched it.
EVERY song existed in another movie, before this movie. This movie is the result of a challenge.
Cassie, i love that you react to wonderful old classic movies. You are one of the very few that do. Much respect.
Gene Kelly, one of the two most famous singer, dancers of all time, along with Fred Astaire. A genious, he also choreographed many of the dances in this and other famous musicals. See 'An American in Paris' to see a true masterpiece that includes another love story and incredible dance numbers. Jean Hagen had a short movie career (and a very nice voice) and played on a lot of tv shows afterward. To see her range in another style of acting see The Asphalt Jungle, a film noir about a brilliant jewel heist gone wrong. A true classic. I've watched your videos from day one. ❤
Kelly and Astaire were friends in real life, not opposites or rivals. Everyone had an unique style (Kelly the Athlet and Artistic one, Astaire the flowing, weaving one. Kelly the handsome guy from the neighbourhood (Worker, Sailor) and Astaire the Man from the upper class, with Smoking and Hat, and they were from different ages, Astaire from the 30s, 40s and Kelly from the 50s, 60s.) Love them both.
Was Gene Kelly the one that danced with the cartoon mouse? Not sure what it's from but i think it's somewhat famous.
This movie is the kind of pure cinematic joy that is so perfect for this channel.
Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly showing love and respect for stuntmen since the 50's 👌🏼
Just a wonderful, iconic and delightful film, a love letter to musicals and to Hollywood.
The first time I saw this movie was in college when they had a sort of outdoor festival and displayed the movie up on the side of a white building. I smiled all the way through it, and all the way to my dorm till my face hurts from smiling so much! It still makes me smile whenever I watch it; it is a huge mood booster, lol.
This is one of the films that I can always rewatch, they are just so talented at everything! I do think you'd also like My Fair Lady!
I love My Fair Lady! ❤
2:35 The radio journalist at the premier is played by Madge Blake, who was also an atomic energy engineer. 7:50 That's Debbie Reynolds, star of many hit movies and also Princess Leia's (Carrie Fisher's) mom. 28:30 The green dress girl is Cyd Charise, one of the best dancers in Hollywood history. You'll enjoy seeing her and Gene Kelley in "Brigadoon" which was made about the same time as this movie.
Brigadoon (1954) is and always will be, my favourite Gene Kelly movie.
I'd second that!
Cassie should review that one around St. Patrick's Day!
You’re doing My Fair Lady..which is musically pretty perfect..On the Street Where You Live was released and charted..
On the Street where you live is a great song. And that is a problem. It is the best song in show and sung by a very minor character. Overall, I consider it an average to below average musical even with that great song and Audrey Hepburn (a top 5 actress).
@@purpleslog and he didn't even sing it himself 😭 Both Audrey and Jeremy Brett (beautiful, beautiful man, the ultimate Sherlock Holmes for many) were dubbed in their songs, even though Jeremy could sing very well and had starred in musicals before. Someone later found and published recordings of Audrey's real voice, but Jeremy's version of that song was lost forever 😢
@@adrianaheiler9794 oh no! I didn’t realize Jeremy Brett was dubbed. There goes my day dream of a Sherlock Holmes musical that never was. I did no that Audrey was dubbed. I rather liked he singing voice. It had echoes of vulnerability in it (recall the scene of her singing moon river with a sparse arrangement).
I think you'd enjoy another Gene Kelly movie, Brigadoon 1954. It's magical.
The couch dance scene was done in one take, the first time through. Debbie Reynolds didn't miss a beat dancing with Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor -- huge stars at the time. Princess Leia's mother... read everything you can... she's worth it!
Your face when Lina first opened her mouth!
This is one of the very rare musicals I actually enjoy, great reaction.
I can’t wait for you to watch this classic!! The scene where Gene was “dancing and singing in the rain,” lol 😂 has gone down to be the famous dance scene of all time!! He was the greatest dancer that ever live IMO. A true perfectionist. The “good mornin’” number was done over 40 times and Debbie said her feet were bleeding but she loved doing the film. She said Gene co-directed this film and had a lot on his shoulders. Some articles say they didn’t get along but that’s true at all. Donald O’Connor said one time Gene got mad at him and told him to “stop fooling around,” and later Gene went back and apologized to him and said that he was afraid to take his anger out on Debbie because he didn’t want to scare her away. He was frustrated that she wasn’t learning the the steps as quickly as he would have liked. Debbie wasn’t a dancer but they hired her because she had the “look,” they were looking for. Back in those days everything had to be done to perfection and Gene was so hard on himself because he wanted to perform at top 🔝 speed. Donald was also a terrific dancer and he said the number “make em laugh,” was Gene’s request. This trio was amazing. The number that Gene does by himself in the rain said that he had a 104 temperature but said he wanted to do the scene anyways. That’s dedication. ❤️🙏🙏 Just don’t find that nowadays. Love all these old movies like “White Christmas,” etc. Love all the glamour!!
Gene also directed Hello Dolly starring Barbara Streisand which is also Ana amazing movie musical!
Please also check out Phantom Of The Opera! That’s my favorite musical ever!! Holds the record for the longest running show to hit Broadway. ❤️❤️🥰 Sadly it had to close its doors after the Pandemic 😷
God Bless to you from my mom and I in So. Cal USA 🇺🇸 got lots of rain today and more on the way so this movie was beyond perfect!
The “good mornin,” number I did with 2 guys when I was a sophomore in high school. It’s so hard. I didn’t have a hard time with other dancer but tap dancing was a nightmare to learn lol 😂
Enjoy the movie!! A classic for sure!! This film is a palette cleanser for sure! You won’t stop singing. lol 😂 or dancing.
Love to all reading this from wherever you are tuning in from!
Gene Kelly had the triple threat! Singing, dancing, and acting! Any dance he could do. Tango, tap dance, waltz, you name it! Michael Jackson idolized Gene Kelly and used him as a model for when he started his career!
Watching him and Donald do their thing is just wow! 2 perfectionists! Debbie was also a lovely lady back then! RIP 😞😞 Debbie. ❤️🥰 She will be missed.
"Who has this much energy?!?" You ain't kiddin'!
There was a film called "The Jazz Singer" and it was probably the first musical film with talking and all the sound synchronised to the lips.
That part in the beginning where the two guys in green and white plaid are dancing and the one leaning back on the other as they walked must had taken major choreography. Wow!
OMG! What a classic! The whole cast is spot on for this one! Donald O'Connor! Amazing!
Ahh the days when real talent was needed to be a success. Gene Kelly known as one of the best male dancers in Hollywood ever. Donald O'Connor was such an incredible talent. He was legit as an actor, dancer, singer and comedian. Then there is Debbie Reynolds. Started in the movies in her teens and had a career that stretched over nearly 70 years. I still fall in love with her whenever one of the classic movie channels shows one of her movies as Tammy. She is also Carrie Fisher's (Princess Leia in Star Wars) real life Mom. Cassie, you might want to see if a movie called How the West Was Won is available for doing a reaction. It has the most amazing cast including Debbie Reynolds and a long list of stars. Brilliant!!! Also for another fun musical, you might want to try Guys and Dolls with Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando or the original Music Man movie with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones from 1962. Not the remake for TV they did some years ago with Mathew Broderick. It was dreadful. Great reaction Cassie. Stay warm and well.
"Eh ke-ent sten 'm!"
"I carn't stand hhim!"
"Eh ke-ent sten 'm!"
I'll always remember that. That and Debbie Reynold's outfit for the _Good mornin'!_ number. That was a killer.
This is one of my all time favourite movies. It was made 5 years before l was born. So lve probably seen this movie more than any other. And l don’t think Ive ever seen Debbie Reynolds look more gorgeous.
I saw Reynolds being interviewed, where she admitted, that Gene Kelly was a perfectionist and demanded that the choreography, synchronisation, timing and steps were perfect and matched his precisely. Reynolds admitted during the rehearsals and filming of the Good Morning routine her feet actually bled, and the whole filmed routine was excruciating.
During the film, you were introduced to Kelly’s legendary long term dance partner during the Broadway Melody number in the astonishing shape of Cyd Charisse! You may have noticed her long amazing legs! Rumour has it that at one point during her partnership with Kelly her legs were reportedly insured for over a million dollars! Which in the 1959s was an astronomic figure.
Great film thank you, so glad you enjoyed it. If you want to see any of Gene Kelly’s other song and dance movies may l suggest American InParis, On The Town
Other must see musical is High Society, a real feel good movie.
I remember seeing this back at elementary school in music class. My favorite part is "Make em Laugh"
❤This is the best rainy day movie and the song is definitely on my rainy day playlist🎶☔🌧 Gene Kelly is a major dance OG.....he was so cute and he can do it all. You should check out Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films 🎥 too. They are so smooth and elegant on the dance floor.
Astaire danced with a number of other movie partners and solo too, but Fred + Ginger was just pure magic on the screen.
I love the Fred and Ginger movies!!!!
Cathy Selden is Princess Leia's mom, in case you didn't know!
My favorite musical of all time. Make 'em laugh is such a fantastic showcase of Donald O'Connor's skill as a dancer. So glad you liked it!
I’ve never been a big fan of musicals, but I love this movie. It’s one of my all time favorites. I wish there had been a sequel where Cosmo got his time to shine and get the girl at the end.
