Def Leppard's one armed drummer, they don't hide it, but they don't put it on display either. That's very classy in my book.
Yeah and he's actually done some television shows an interview where he goes into depth about it.. most of them were from England so I never saw them until RUclips started sharing all this information. MTV certainly mentioned it but they were so popular you just sort of forgot about it after a while

Btw metal pioneers Motorhead felt the same way... that the band did right by Rick in not just leaving him behind.. When he lost his arm it hit us teens pretty hard. We thought Def Leppard would never bee the same. You don’t want to see your favorite bands lose a mate and then replace him. I can still remember hearing the news and feeling crushed. When their next album came out we were more in love with them than ever.
I saw them several times live in the 80s the positive energy they give the crowd was incredible. We all left just feeling happy to be alive, enjoying each other and our friendships. Most concerts you left feeling exited and energized but Def Leppard left you feeling that happy.

Rick Allen just recently was voted the best drummer in the world.
To help him out after the accident a drum kit was made so that everything was reversed. All credit goes to the band mates who stuck with him and the crazy history that goes with them.
If you want to hear more, try 'Photogragh'...one of their earlier songs. The drummer lost his arm in accident, but the band waited for him to recover instead of replacing him. The drummer and band inspired a generation because of it...the dedication, loyalty, and love of music.

In the Def Leppard documentary they talk about going to visit Rick in the hospital thinking that he would be really depressed, when they got there he had already worked out how to play with one arm. So they said "if your up for it, just let us know when you're ready"
My favorite band of all time. The movie Hysteria: The Def Leppard Story explains it all also.

Def Leppard are a true brotherhood They didn't abandon their guy. They supported him for the torturous recovery period.

During the making of their fifth album tragedy would strike Def Leppard again with the death of Guitarist Steve Clark from alcohol poisoning which would usher in his replacement Vivian Vance former Guitarist from the group Black and Blue.

It was never a question of if Rick was going to return to the band but when, he designed a new drum kit so that everything his arm used to do he could do with his feet on pedals connected to the relevant drum/cymbals . i saw them live at the O2 a couple of years ago, absolutely awesome.

Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car crash. While still in the hospital he was already working out in his mind modifications to his kit that would allow his feet to do the work of his left hand. The band never considered replacing him though they did hire a backup (who was a trusted friend) for the first tour in case he got tired. Rick played the first concert through without tapping out and the backup man left immediately on friendly terms. Fortunately, Def Leppard had enough unreleased recordings at the time of the accident they didn't lose any ground during Rick's recovery.
I saw Def Leppard live in 1988, about a year after this album came out. The incredible thing about Rick Allen is, you watch him for about the first minute of the first song, and you realise "oh my god, this isn't a freak show, he really is doing it all, and doing it in a way that perfectly fits with the rest of the band", then it just becomes perfectly normal and that big glossy Def Leppard sound takes over, and you enjoy a great rock show. He's an incredibly talented and inspirational man; in a group of talented and inspirational men.
Thats how you know they are an awesome group...not only awesome music. Their drummer has an accident, losing his arm, and they wait for him to heal and retrain to drum.
I have seen this band in concert several times and Rick Allen kills it every single time! And hats off to the band when he lost his arm at the height of their career, they took time off for him to relearn how to drum with one arm. He's amazing! He had a car accident while he was drunk. That was in 1984. And today you cannot tell he has only one arm. The guy is a true hero!!

After a car accident where Rick lost his left arm (he almost lost his right arm as well) Rick retaught himself to play everything he used to play with his left arm, but now with his left foot playing the left arms role, but with a specifically redesigned/restructured kit. Amazing inspiring story. The bands character as a whole to support him though it too was rewarded. Universal Karma rewarded them all as they ended up being the biggest band in the world for a time. Guitarist Steve Clark died during this album follow up records pre- production. That was the end of world dominating superstardom. But their legend was etched in rocknroll stone by then. They have had the same lineup for 30 years since Vivian Cambell joined. Rick has been Solid the entire time since. Ive seen them live once in Melbourne Australia in 2018. Still selling out stadiums. Was like 12-15 thousand people at that gig.

You see, the best compliment you gave Rick Allen, was the fact that you watched 3 videos from Def Leppard before you figured it out. Rick is nothing short of phenomenal. Once you hear his backstory, he's a once-in-a-generation wonder/inspiration !!!

Rick Allen had a horrific car accident when he was 21. He's been with the band since he was 15, so they definitely weren't gonna give up on their best bud. They waited for him to heal and re-teach himself how to play. He has a special kit in which his left foot could emulate what his left arm could do. He still suffers PTSD from the accident to this day and says drumming and painting is therapeutic healing for him.
I was at the 2-night concert in Denver when they recorded "Pour some sugar on me" and the whole band was freaking awesome....💝

He actually has one arm, as others have said. After his accident, he reworked his drum kit to use more foot pedals. It delayed the release of Hysteria, but the bad had been friends since theybwere teens and stood by him.

Saw them here in 2018 . Just awesome in concert. Rick slays those skins even with one arm. His drum kit is a mechanicle marvel. Legends all of them.
They are incredible live!! They're my sister's favorite band. I got front row seats for us. I went there liking them, I left a fan. Rick Allen IS THUNDER GOD! The crowd loves him. The band would never replace him. So after losing his arm in a car accident, he had a drum kit set up for his feet. When he woke up after it, his first thought was "ok how do I procede as a drummer" Ingenious really.

In Def Leppards older videos, Rick Allen had 2 arms. He lost the left arm in 1984 when he crashed his car. The band stayed by his side while he learned to adjust to playing with a new setup for his drumset that allows him to play the left hand parts with his foot.

He's an amazing drummer. He's been with one arm for quite a while now. He joined the band when he was 15. Their first three albums came out when he was 16, 17, and 19. While on a break after the tour for pyromania, he lost his arm when he crashed his Corvette in England on December 31st 1984, a month after he turned 21. Other comments have filled you in on how his bros stood by him and waited for his brain to learn how to channel his left arm parts to his left foot. You will notice, if you look for it, that if Rick Allen is wearing a shirt, it's after the arm was lost

I had either read or heard that when they played their first show after Rick's accident, they had hired a back up drummer just in case because they weren't sure if Rick was physically able to handle a full set so soon after the accident. Rick ended up playing the entire set by himself.

If you notice, towards the end of the video, it shows the pedals that Rick Allen controls with his left foot.
It shows briefly in Hysteria. Rick Allen crashed his Corvette, luckily survived. But, his left arm was badly damaged. The surgeons did all they could with Rick pleading “I’m a drummer”. Unfortunately, infection set in and his arm had to be amputated. The Band stopped all until Rick healed and put a kit together that would work with his feet. Once his design was finished, Rick learned how to play…again. A drumming beast! And a stand-up Band!

Rick Allen is a legend. He isn't the greatest drummer of all time -- that's Buddy Rich -- but he's easily the best drummer alive today.
I agree, Buddy is an all time absolute beast and is/was a master of the drum arts, but Rick is a unique individual and powered through a situation that would have ended most musicians careers. Both legends in their own rights!

Rick Allen has been their drummer from the beginning. He crashed his sportscar back in the mid 1980s and suffered an injury that requires the arm to amputated. He had to custom design a drum kit that allowed him to play with his feet and one arm instead of two arms and one foot.

It's fun watching reactions to Def Leppard because everyone has the same reaction when they see Rick Allen's shirt.... Wait does he have one arm? Apparently Rick Allen occasionally will work with other people that have lost a limb. I saw an interview where he was taking time with a fan who only had one arm and was trying to excel in something I forgot all the details.

Def Leppard's drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in an automobile accident in 1984. The band rallied around him, supported him until he came back with a custom made drum kit. That says alot about the band beyond their fame or music. Rick plays drums with his right arm and his feet.
Drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car accident after the band completed their second album Pyromania. Their 3rd album was delayed 18 months (this was in addition to other delays) while Allen recovered and developed a modified way to play the drums, which he did by building a custom drum kit and compensating for his left arm with his feet. It is a testament to the band that they believed Allen would be able to pull this off and never even considered finding a replacement. Rick Allen pulled this off so well that fans really couldn't hear any difference. The 3rd album, Hysteria where this song is from, did quite well eventually selling 20 million copies. Rick Allen is still playing drums with Def Leppard more than 32 years later.

Rick lost his arm in 1984, in a car accident.. he was thrown from the car and his seatbelt took his arm off at the shoulder!!! They tried to reattach it but it got infected and they took it back off, six weeks later he started playing drums using a specially designed kit & his feet... still going strong today... ❤️

He lost his arm in an automobile accident. When that happened he’d already had been in the band for several years. He was with them when they originally formed the band. You probably watched videos they made before the accident.
Rick Allen was in a car accident around 1986. When they couldn’t save the arm, he had to learn to play using electronic pedals to the left of his bass drum. Since they’re electric, the pedals match the sounds of the electronic pads that aRick hits with his right hand. He perfected it over time. It’s truly amazing also that his mates didn’t move on to another drummer , but they hung in there with Rick till worked out playing the electronically. What an inspiration for any drummer, person who doesn’t have all their limbs.

Yes he only has one arm . He joined the band when he was 15 years old back in 77 or 78 . It wasn't until 84 when he rolled a Corvette the seatbelt cut his arm off . The doctors were able to reattach his arm but he started getting gang green & the doctors had to cut it off again . He is the greatest drummer ever . Def Leppard should be recognized as the greatest band ever not just because of their music but because of the character Joe Elliott , Rick Savage , Steve Clark & Phil Collen showed Rick Allen after he lost his arm by sticking with him & not replacing him with someone else . He had to relearn how to play the drums. Switching from a acoustic kit, to an electric kit, specifically designed for Rick. So everything he did with his left arm, he does with his left leg.

Sadly losing their guitarist Steve Clark would create more tragedy, and yet another big change to the sound of their music (Steve wrote a lot of it, right from the beginning)...
but they overcame that too when the time was right to bring Viv Campbell in.
They couldn't replace Steve, but onstage, there is always a microphone set up for him.

The drummer lost both arms in a car wreck but they reattach them but a infection set in and they removed the arm that had the most damage. And on a side note the first person to show up at the wreck was a nurse and she said the man ( the drummer) I’m Def Leppard.
