Covenant Path? Think Celestial? How about Ponderize? These and more catchphrases ebb and flow with popularity. But how frequently are they used, and why?
If I went the rest of my life never having to hear tender mercy ever again I'd die a happy man.
For me it is the covenant path. Think Celestial.
I agree !!! It's nauseating!!!
One I wish we would hear a little more of goes something like "I know this is what Jesus wants me to tell you because I talked with him."

You should do one that tracks how often Jesus vs the current prophet is used in General Conference
Nemo the Mormon does a running tally every conference between Jesus, Joseph Smith, and the current prophet. Nelson won last October.
Why? We all know "the prophet" is far more important. That Jesus guy? Forget it.
Knowing and using the current lingo is a great way to virtue signal your worthiness
I agree that this is one of the primary motivations of saints who latch onto these phrases and repeat them.
PONDERIZE!
It's all about the merchandizing!
"Should we crush our water bottles like they do?" lol
@@oshemer5066agreed. Worst talk on so many levels. Here is a man, who only has 10-15 min to speak to the entire church about what ever he wants that could testify of Christ- or any Gospel topic! And he chooses to talk about crushing water bottles! Who vets these talks? 🤮
@@oshemer5066 Especially since President Oaks very likely meant it as a joke.
@@jillianhq Ha ha! If it fits the narrative it passes. And that one was stellar. Did you notice in the last conference it seemed there was a memo that every speaker had to include a quote from Pres. Nelson? They all mention him. I am observing a doubling down on "follow the prophet" since c*vid. Maybe because so many died from the advice from their letter.
@@teinelaume the Nelson worship is getting out of hand.
Very true. So cringe.
The "Think Celestial" makes me cringe. The grammar is just fingernails on a clip board to me.
“Let God Prevail”
'Nother good one! Disney translation, "Let it GO! Let it GO!"
yes
Rasband is clearly the suck up, catch phrase guy! Still doing it after Love and appreciating his way to the top!
Yes!
He sure is. Rasband is terrible.
"Follow the Prophet" There is no scripture with that. There was a song made of it to teach children but where is the scriptural doctrine on it? Aren't we really supposed to follow Jesus? It is troubling to trust in flesh.....unless..... He is teaching the doctrine of Christ.
I'd refer you to Amos 3:7 and 2nd nephi 25:9 and many others. The Lord tells the prophet's what's coming. So if you think you can do it all by yourself then good luck on that one. It's the proud and hard hearted that think the Lord's prophet's are just out of touch.
@@wheels636 I largely agree with you but What percent of the prophets council do you think is Gods revelation? I used to think it's all but Ive come to understand that that would rob them of a ton of their own progression and that historically prophets have been way off base and out of touch. I listen to them but also largely evaluate their council as that of a nonagenarian who is largely out of touch with we singles /youth. I dont think more than 5% is revelation max. Maybe even less. I cant defend Brigham Young and also say that everything ever said was Gods revelation and I also cant defend Elder Oaks when he says we dont apologize for the hurt we caused so many yet I also support him as an apostle because I understand that much of what they say is correct and intended to be good but that they are also largely fallible same as my Father who was high in the church ranks. I feel we are very out of touch today because we should be doubling down on condemning abortion practices and really digging deeper on the roles outlined in the proclamation but instead we are doing less. This is why marriage rates are in the toilet. Prophets should have been able to see this coming but they didnt. Meanwhile Lehi was out in the streets screaming repentance and standing up to evil while we have backed down. It's hard to watch because I am a full believing member but the softening of the church to a fully gynocentric and politically aligned with the global elites is hard to digest.
@@wheels636It's the proud and hard hearted that get stuck on false sheepish narrative that someone is a prophet just because millions of sheep regurgitate it. Pride does come before the fall. You should contemplate that phrase unto yourself.
@ruckin3 yet it's not your job to council the Lord either by saying his leadership doesn't receive revelation. Inspired leaders dont always say thus saith the Lord but it doesn't mean that the Lord's not speaking through them. That's the problem in every generation. They think the Lord's council is hard, like what Elder Oaks talks about. But in reality, it's what's needed to call those who want the church to conform to their idea's of the times they are in and call them to repent. That's not how the Lord's ever worked. The Lord's prophet's are telling you something, and it's at our peril if we choose not to listen. There's many people who think the church should accept doctrines of our time's and allow everyone to go to the temple or be married. But that's a doctrine that will lead to their own spiritual destruction.
@@littleredhen3218 cultists. Show me your freedom of thought, you have none with this false doctrine that a prophet is a prophet because all the sheep think he's such!
One that is new and often used that I have an issue with is ‘ongoing restoration’.
What’s your issue with it? I’m actually exmo, not being contentious, just genuinely curious. I hear this one a lot with my in-laws.
@@markyoung2246 My problem with the term "ongoing restoration" is that it is usually used to excuse the church no longer following several things Joseph Smith and earlier prophets said was eternal doctrine, yet the church now acts like it was just policy and the "ongoing restoration" has provided "further light and knowledge" that just happens to parallel what the current prophet has been wanting to do for decades and now has the power to make the change.
@@nickdipaolofan5948 thanks for the explanation! Is this something active members have issues with? I’m completely out of the loop here. My in-laws celebrate this term, so it’s interesting to hear the other side of this. Thanks!!
@@markyoung2246 I was all in my whole life (in several EQ and YM presidencies and other leadership positions) up until about 4 years ago. I no longer believe but still go because my wife and kids enjoy the social aspect of it. Yes, every believing member I know also loves this term because it explains away the contradictions I brought up. It is a typical thought stopping catch phrase that makes a believing member feel warm and fuzzy. But to members like me who notice the blatant contradictions between what past prophets said should never change and current prophets completely abandoning those doctrines, the phrase is insulting to our intelligence.
I have always been comfortable with the concept of "Continuing Revelation" but not "Continuing Restoration" because Joseph claimed that the "Restoration of all things" was his calling to fulfill. Of course, Joseph also said that the second coming of Jesus would happen around the time he was the age of Seventy something. So, he was just talking out of his ass and the current prophets know this. That is why they are so comfortable completely changing many things that were said to be unchangeable doctrine. If they truly believed, they would have the fear of God regarding changing past revelations or doctrines.
@ oh for sure. Good explanation, makes sense to me. I sincerely appreciate it.
This was a great musing. I feel like you do about our Mormon culture.
To me, a lot of these phrases 1. seem glib/meaningless after awhile. 2. In some cases prideful == "look at me. I am following the prophet."' 3. It seems like living the Gospel on the surface whereas when you get into the meat of the scriptures what you learn has so much more depth! The Gospel is so much more than a fad! 4. I love a heartfelt talk or testimony, no matter words are used..
Exactly what I was going to say. Connor says these phrases really don't do any harm. But I think they do for those very reasons.
Yes, use of the phrases by the general membership seems to be very superficial, almost virtue signaling. Hey, I saw one talk last conference and I use this popular phrase too.
@@rcnelson exactly. They promote dependency, and if your foundation is built on fables and precepts of men it will crumble. 👍
Well stated
In recent times these catchphrases are easily merchandised.

I LOVED the family home evening g manual as a kid! I haven't heard Family Night in years!
Amen im sick of covenant path and think celestial everyone is just kissing president nelsons ass i think they quote him as much as Jesus in conference’s now!
Lol. Love the bold take.
@@joemedeiros298 exactly!
Nelson actually was quoted/ referenced more than Jesus last conference and I believe the one before. The ass kissing has been fairly apparent with Nelson. Monson/ hinckley both didn’t seem to get sucked up to nearly as much. I could be wrong though.
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets...14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive... Ephesians 4:14
Church leaders are supposed to be preventing this, not causing this.
Nothing encapsulates things for me as the change from “Worldwide Church” to “Global Church”. Also, gotta love referring to the Prophet as a “Faith Leader” when rubbing shoulders with all the organizations that President Benson warned against.
I don't like "be a good global citizen "...what does that even mean when I don't travel the globe?😅
Never mind the World Health Organization or the United Nations or world economic forum infiltrating the church.
Just call it by the right name as it acquires the woke mind virus and gets subverted.

..what about replacing baptism, with 'covenant bath?' You guys slay me. Greetings from NZ 😂
Another excellent musing! I have never been totally sure what "think Celestial" even means. The tern "lengthen your stride" was from Spencer W. Kimball. I agree with you about abortion. It's still a big thing in this country but rarely spoken of from the pulpit. Seems like after Prop 8 in California, the church leaders are less and less specific about political and social issues. Thanks again Conner and Happy New Year!
nelson has given millions to abortion be giving funds to naacp and the UN and red cross....all three publically allow any donation money to get used as they please ans only so many cents on the dollar to any particular item donation says itw for and they all fund abortions
Do you know that During Prop 8 our church was by far the largest financial support for this, by a huge jump. But I found out later it was because certain members with money were asked by their church leadership to donate $10,000 each. When I saw the amount was the same from California donors to Texas, I began to guess more people were asked to do the same amount. Later it was thrown in the trash by judges. And there went the money. It is amazing the power an inspired leader can have over believing members. I am sure God blessed those people for their obedience because he looks on the heart but I sure hope the heart of those leaders was clean too.
The church is a corporation and behaves as such. Most of these phrases are nothing more than corporate buzz-words. They are as much BS in the church as they are in the corporate world. TBMs hate being told that, but that is what they are.
I feel like I’ve heard “our beloved prophet” a ton. Pretty similar to “our dear prophet” though. To me this illustrates the incredible influence the church leaders have at their disposal. If I were in their shoes and was presented with this data, I think I would try to intentionally make the catch phrases scriptural, to draw people more towards the Word. Maybe that’s just because I find the scriptural catch phrases most meaningful.
No prophet has ever stood up at any time in history and said "follow me".
I think if you were to ask the Mormon on the street what these phrases mean they wouldn't even know. For example: "Think Celestial" the answer might sound like, "Be Christlike" or keep your focus on attaining the Celestial Kingdom" The subliminal message is the temple the temple the Temple. The same goes for "Stay on the covenant path", or "hold tight to your covenants" that means don't leave the church, go to the temple, which requires worthiness, which requires tithing. (what would it be like if salvation was not tied to paying tithing and all the other worthiness interview requirements? What if salvation was free without cost, and what if you could come to God anywhere, anytime like your closets or while hunting?)
What does it take to be Celestial? According to D&C 76, this person has received the testimony of Jesus, believed on his name, baptized like he was (water, fire), keep his commandments, cleansed from all your sins, received the Holy Ghost, Overcome the world by faith, sealed by the holy spirit of promise, attained the title of "just and true", member of the Church of the Firstborn, attained level of Priest and king, Received of his fullness and of his Glory.
As I have searched, I found these words in 76 do not mean what is commonly thought. Jeremiah 23 says that would be our case in the latter days. So are we being scattered or gathered? Sometimes saying the words makes you believe you are living the words which leads to complacency and causes the person to think they have arrived. My beef with these catchphrases is The "how" are not being taught. You may think it is because you hear words like "broken heart contrite spirit" in a talk, but there is very little explanation or example given of the one thing Christ says he wants from us.
In answer to fasting and after years of wondering why my knowledge about these phrases was fuzzy at best, I had a question regarding letter from the first presidency about trusting our Government leaders. I was asking if the letter was from him. I was shown Isaiah 28: Your priest and the prophet err in vision, and stumble in judgement. And the table (a place to eat) is full of filth, vomit and there is "no place clean". Now that was hitting on Baptism of Fire stuff. I said, "I want a second opinion" And I was shown Matt 23:13 The reason there is no place clean is that they block people from coming up because they don't even know how to do it themselves. (no unclean thing can enter) This was shocking to say the least.
Mosiah 16:14-15 says, if you are going to teach the temple the temple, teach that it is a type and shadow of things to come. The scriptures show we are meant to actualize what is symbolized in the Temple (sooner than later!). When he said "come unto me" he meant it. But somewhere the "how" got hijacked. P.S. This information does not negate all the wonderful spiritual experiences you have ever had. They are real. God speaks to us in our language so we can understand. But then there is more, that is why sanctification is a process and Justification are events along that path. So don't freak out. =)
Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.
Really dreading hearing about the "relentless pursuit" for the next 10-15 years as well as the Nehor attitude that it will continue to inculcate even deeper into our membership
I have cringed and cringed when I hear “the covenant path” as a term and all of these other seeming hashtag sounding terms that are used in a ramiumptum, self congratulatory, “thank you God, that we are saved, elect, and chosen, while everyone outside of our chapel (or temple, synagogue or belief system) is damned) vibe.
I understand what you mean, and I agree with you on principle, but that same sentiment applies to literally every testimony when phrases of “I know the church is true, etc” are uttered. Now, to be fair to your point, those are self-elevating statements and paradigms, however, when one gains a testimony, such things can be stated by that individual in sincerity, without an element of self-aggrandizement. And for the most part, I find it more of the exception than the rule for someone to use those statements without a spirit of boasting, however boasting / pride can and does definitely occur. But c’mon, we’ve got the Book of Mormon and the prophet of the last dispensation, Joseph Smith. I personally, love this about our church.
I didn’t served a mission abroad, but friends of mine who served in the states taught me the term “every member a mission president”. Some members love to tell on the missionaries.
The temple was pushed the whole time I was a member. RMN's influence.
I'm so Sick of the "Covenant Path" aka ignorance and obedience. Rise up and rebell. stay active but stick it to these old farts!!
At 22:00 👉 Should we crush our water bottles the same way he does?
Because you *know* that many members and leaders are going to *that* extreme! 😆
Look up plastic recycling centers in Utah. Does one exist?
"Beloved prophet". Wonder if Isaiah ever heard the term said of him?
Ha! Great point. He certainly did not. Neither did Lehi, Samuel the Lamanite, Ether, Mormon, or Moroni.
But I'm sure Caiaphas did.
Bingo!
Vanities of vanity all is vanity.
Interesting video. Thanks for the data analysis here. What we are seeing is very common across any organization or closely managed institution. It is the evolution and devolution of language. It happens everywhere, not just in the church. I think the biggest takeaway for me is the move away from controversial phases and topics in the last 15 years. Moving away from abortion when it has been a hot topic the last 5 years and not referencing "secret combination" recently when our society and government has been filled with them-- (ie. COVID, Big Food, Big Pharma, FBI, Jan 6, Ukraine, etc.) tells me that, if anything, the general authorities have moved closer to the "politically correct, left-leaning establishment" side of the spectrum.
I wouldn't have noticed this without this insight so thanks for sharing.
“…on both sides of the veil”
Ha! Yes! Are we looking through a burkah?!
Choose the Sprite when the Coke is placed before you.
The next catchphrase is going to be "Zion Prospers".
Interesting they aren't wanting to draw attention to secret combinations... one of the main purposes of the Book of Mormon.
well that is because they are a big part of it. It's that wolf in sheep's clothing thing. Evidence: the fruits. Find out where tithing money goes. Bill Gates, China, UN, Unesco and more. grinding on the face of the poor while building temples that have become the replacement of actually entering into the presence of the Lord.
Honestly behind the message of following Christ, I believe it is the reason for the Book of Mormon.
“Eternal perspective” and “eternal companion” and “families are forever” would be interesting to track!
also non paid clergy
@kerstenlindhardt1653 it bugged me so much when my mom passed away, everyone said to me, " don't be sad! Family is forever! You will see her again!" It was insensitive things to say to thoes who just lost their love one. It is not that I did not understand the concept of enteral Family. People need time to be sad and grief. Telling people that "Family is forever!" is telling thoes who are in grief to get over your sadness and put on a happy face! It is no different than telling people to think celestial when they are struggling. It is so easy for President Nelson to tell people to think celestial when he really does not have any challenges in life!
“Every worthy young man should go on a mission”
Yep and none of the current first presidency served a full time mission. Corrosion is not faith
“Good, better, best”
That one actually had some profundity to it.
How about “Beloved Prophet”. I never heard that until the last 10 years or so. Deifying the prophet?

even last conference his claim of surviving a gun being held to his head was totql lie and he adds to the story everytime and he was never in dqnger qnd his wife wasnt either and no guns involved and someone else got hurt and they take alllll the limelight with lies
I grew in the 50s and 60s I went on my mission in 1969. When I was a child, the catch phrases were all began with, Jesus said. Jesus said, "Come follow me." Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the Life." Jesus said, "If you love me Keep my commandments." Jesus said, "And this is life eternal, to know you the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have send." Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whosoever believes in me though he is dead, shall yet me made a live and whosoever lives in me and believes in me shall not die." Jesus said, "Except your righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees and Sadducees, (Your religious rulers and hypocrites"), you shall in no wise see the kingdom of Heaven." Jesus said, "As I have loved you, love one another." Jesus said, "The first and great commandments is to Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. The second is like unto it. Love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus said, "Even as you would that others do unto you, do likewise unto them." The list goes on. Those are the catch phrases I grew up on, but after the 60s, things changed. The leaders of the church started quoting other people instead of Jesus. New words were being introduced, like reverence and veneration. I had seen enough of the Catholic church to see similarities between the teachings of the Catholic church and our church, and I did not like it, but like an idiot, I went along with it, sort of. Because of my childhood up bringing, I stayed focused on Jesus and by the 80s, Jesus had made my calling and election sure. By the 90s, I could not take it any more seeing the church's decline into Catholicism and I left the church, which did not matter because of my relationship with Jesus. I found out my feelings about the church being Catholic were confirmed in 2013 when I found out about the Jesuit-Illuminati conspiracy to take over the churches of America, especially the LDS because of the priesthood and the tithes. I found out that David O. McKay was Illuminati. You did a musing about Nelson being a member of skull and bones which is a Jesuit organization. I am glad I left when I did. I feel sorry for you folks who are still under the dictatorship of the Catholic Church and paying tithes to the Illuminati.
I'm afraid I have seen evidence to confirm what you are saying. Most here will not even respond because it sounds so far out there and may be too much all at once. But for some of it, I have heard multiple witnesses. Some is new to me. For any readers, Here is a test to see if you have been kept from the gospel: Do you remember all those talks describing their born again experiences? Name them. They would have been amazing. We would all have been quoting them in our talks. It would have sounded like King Benjamin's people or Enos, or Alma and the son's of Mosiah. Do you remember in sunday school when you learned about what it takes to be of the Church of the First Born and you actively sought it? Or how the teacher took time to identify the gadianton robbers of today? (and no it wasn't just the mob or gangs) Do you remember that priesthood lesson that described what "After the Order of the Son of God" meant? or "Calling and Election made sure"? Which cleanses you, the baptism of water or fire? What did that feel like? If the signs that follow the believers are healing the sick, casting out devils, speaking in tongues. poison's don't effect, then where are they? Is Ephraim a fading flower located in the fat valleys (Isaiah 28)? Who is clarifying the signs we have been seeing in the heavens and in the earth?
IF you are pulling blanks here, or you excuse all of these things away as not important because it's not talked about in church, Then I have a question for you: Are some of these things just"nice to know" or "essential"? And if essential, then shouldn't you enquire of the Lord? Once you unlock the key of unbelief you will see it everywhere. We do a lot out of tradition. The way we age up into the next priesthood, go on missions, the way we repent, the way we attend the Temple without understanding, and more. I think the church has prospered because the Lord wants the Book of Mormon to be spread and he is allowing the wheat and tares to grow up together.
@@teinelaume Thank you for your reply. Let me answer it. Joseph Smith told about the spirit of prophecy, that it is the testimony of Jesus, referencing Revelation 19:10. He went on to say that there are three levels of prophecy. The first level of prophecy is knowing that Jesus is the Christ the son of the living God revealed by the Father. This happened to me when I was 5 years old, (1954) Th first time I remember going to Sunday School, the teacher asked me if I knew who Jesus is. I did not recognize the name and said, No. She went on say that he is the son of God the creator of the world. I remembered, in that moment, being with them before I was born and I said, "Oh yeah, I know who you are talkin' about." I know Jesus is the son of the living God,
The second level of prophecy is knowing that you have been born again and baptized by fire and the holy Ghost This happened to me when I was 24.(1973) I was in the Navy at the time, assigned to the USS Oriskany. We were scheduled for a WESTPAC cruise. I did not want to go. I had only been married for a year and I had a 6 week old daughter. I did not want to be separated from my family, so my wife and I pray fervently that the Lord would do something so I would not have to go. I expected him to so something miraculous like he had done for me in past. I was heartbroken when he did nothing. I was so heartbroken I went to a place on ship where I could be alone and Cried and prayed, "Lord. why are you doing this to me. Why didn't you answer our prayers?" After a while of praying in this manner, the Lord finally said to me. "Joe, if you want me to answer you, you will have to listen." I cleared my mind of all other thoughts and listened. Then the Lord said, "You need to repent." Then he reminded me of all my sins. My sorrow suddenly changed from being sorry for my predicament to being sorry for my sins. I immediately repented and made a commitment to do everything to avoid sinning again. Then I asked forgiveness. In the moment I said "Amen", suddenly I felt the burden of guilt lifted from me and I felt freedom like I had not felt for a long time. I felt peace and joy greater than I had ever felt before. But the greatest of all was the feeling of Love that enveloped me that is indescribable. I felt the baptism of fire and holy Ghost. I know that Jesus is my personal savior. He is my Lord, my king and best friend.
The third level of prophecy is knowing that you have been sealed up into Eternal life and had you calling and elections made sure. This happened to me in 1984. After ten years of intense testing in the laws of the celestial kingdom, The Lord called me to the temple fasting. I had been serving in the temple, everyday for about ten months. It was the final test but I did not know it until the end. I went to the temple and when I got up into the Celestial room, after everybody else had moved on, Jesus came in and I asked him what he wanted me to do. He said, "Joe I did not call you here today to give you something to do. I called you here today to give you something. I promise you the Celestial kingdom" Then he took me into his presence. I felt something change inside of me and I knew what he had said was true, but I did not completely understand it. I spent the rest of the day, figuring out what had just happened. The Lord sanctified me and made my calling and election sure and told me that no matter what may happen to me in life, I would not lose the promise and my priesthoods could not be taken from me. The only way to lose what I had just obtained would be to commit the unpardonable sin and shed innocent blood. I know Jesus. I have seen his face, heard his voice and felt his touch. He is real and tangible and the most loving man I have ever met.
In 2004, the Lord called me to an independent mission outside the church and had me start the mission with a 40 day fast, From the 19th of December 2004 until the 29th of January 2005, I did not eat anything. On the night of the 37th day, I was visited by Jesus and Joseph Smith and transfigured in their presence and they put their hands on my head and blessed me and gave me keys. Then in 2018, I was run over by a 45 ton Mack dump truck. I survive by a miracle as all five wheels on the passenger side of the truck rolled over me, but the wheels did not touch my body.
@21:47 .... and crushed water bottles as a token of following the prophet along the Covenant Path, as we lengthen our stride to gather Israel!
That whole thing was super creepy to me.
that would be funny to hear a whole conference center crush water bottles at the same time.
Someone please map the trajectory of the catchphrase "ongoing restoration." For a long while, we were told the gospel IN IT'S FULLNESS had been restored. We can't have it both ways.
I'd like to see that too. I've been collecting a side by side on what scripture says about the Gentile church blowing it after they received it like the Israelites had before, verses "the gospel will never be removed again."
It is ongoing because we have not received the 116 pages or many of the writings of John or all of the teachings of Jesus to the Nephites. Mormom abridged the Nephite records as well, we only have a smidgen of those records. We are not ready for them yet.
Haha. Church culture is so funny.
“Tender mercies,” yes, tons of usage.
Do others of you agree that the number one phrase that has been adopted by church members and used incessantly in testimony, talk, presentation, and even prayer, is “tender mercies“?
It seemingly has been so overused that, for me at least, it becomes a distraction rather than an apt description.
Thanks Connor for addressing some of this. I always appreciate when individual church members take enough time to create their own descriptions, and write their own talks, using our church leaders, and the scriptures as great resources.
Another trend in the church has been to assign church members a talk by a general authority to use as the resource for their own talk. Some choose to do just that and use it only as a resource while others simply regurgitate the talk word for word. There has been a trend among some church leaders to encourage the regurgitation approach, at times, and it does not seem to be a process that is good for the talk-giver or the congregation. Perhaps this is a topic for a future musing.
The phrase "tender mercies" is not a trigger phrase as much as the others I think because it was taken directly from the Book of Mormon I think.
@@morjulies Psalm 25:6
I second the suggestion about using conference talks for sacrament meeting (and RS & Priesthood too). The majority of the time I walk away uninspired because I already listened to and read the talk. I'm not sure that a lot of people even know how to have a real gospel discussion, but rather feel more comfortable reading from a script.
@@WashingtontreeI'm 100% on board with that. Conference talks are milk of the gospel. Basic concepts. The only mention of Joseph Smith is the first vision. None of his teachings.

“Do it” or “Do in now” by Pres. Kimball. He had a sign on his desk. It was used a lot back in the day.
I would be interested on your thoughts of the break down of the family unit and the effects on the church. I heard that the best marriage counseling you can receive is to study what the Bible says on marriage. My husband and I have done just that and have notice more harmony in our marriage. It doesn't seem like the leaders emphasize on biblical teachings of marriage much or at all.
You are correct. And it upsets a lot of American women, but the truth is that we don’t really follow the proclamation of the family and its roles. Instead, we have adopted leftist terminology like partnership, and we are terrified of speaking about abortion, and despite the fact that data shows that women in the church who are single or unmarried are having sex more than single men or that a woman’s role should be to respect and appreciate her husbandand instead of looking for work outside the home while the children are young, should be focused exclusively on making the home a temple and a sanctuary. Not raised by some daycare or woke school. It’s astounding to me because we can all define what the roles of a man are, but we will not do it for a wife and mother.
You’re having positive results because you are studying the words of Christ and learning to “see, think, feel and act as he does! Keep up the good work…the work that is absolutely necessary for spiritual growth!
We can’t think celestial unless we 1st learn to think as Christ does! There is no covenant path! You actually can’t or shouldn’t enter into a covenant with Heavenly Father unless you are on the “Straight and Narrow Path” (The Path of Righteousness)!
Here's one for you... "Changing Latter-day Saint catchphrases".
"Think celestialLY"...Ahh, much better. Grammatically correct. I wish this was used instead.
Line upon line, precept upon precept. That one was big when I was a child in So Cal
Saturday’s Warrior-was that the 1970’s?
BUT it is found in the scriptures at least, not something that was coined.
I'd be interested in certain topics. It seems like in the 70s and early 80s, every conference and occasionally in sacrament or Sunday School, we'd hear about our year's supply of food storage. But it seems like we rarely ever discuss this anymore.
And this is a weird one. I recently watched both "It's a Wonderful Life" and an 80s RUclips film of "It's a Miracle." It seems like in my childhood I heard a lot of references to our guardian angel, and I rarely hear anything along those lines anymore.
Elder oaks gave a pretty bold talk on angels and their intervention in our lives, in either 1992 or 1993.
I’ve hardly ever heard any other reference like that one.
"Think celestial" getting on my nerve! When you struggle to feed your children, just sit there and think celestial. When you have family member dealing with cancer and struggling financially, just sit there and think celestial! Telling people to think celestial is basically telling people to "shut up" and their struggles don't matter!
exactly.......and its liberal leaders and members who use it the most....
its sad the word celestial would ever have a negqtive feeling attached to it but it does now because of nelson
No it isn’t. Have you even read the talk? Struggling to feed kids…think celestial would mean to improve yourself so you can feed your kids. For the family member dealing with cancer, think celestial would mean to get to work and fund raise. Get to your family members house and serve them, give them a blessing. Nowhere does that phrase mean sit and do nothing. Thinking leads to doing.
You added the "just sit there" part.
“Think Celestial” rubbed me wrong the moment I heard it. I don’t know why, but I don’t like it.
You have a unique interpretation of think celestial. I never did get that from it.
I wonder if Oakes temporary commandments will burst big on the scene.
I hope not
This was good , I agree with you. “ un-pack” bugs me too, and it’s used a lot in my ward. 😮
Covenant path is just a happier more positive or even woke watered down term for “straight and narrow path”… goes along with the new term coined by cwic greg madsen “teddy bear Jesus” and how the Church has softened who Christ and Heavenly Father are. I’m sure the Church has their PR people that help them with these phrases… we’ve changed so much since when I grew up being a gen X’er… was MUCH more hell fire messaging and black/white to the point back then.
Also I’ve noticed that even the mission phrases of the Church have gotten rid of the “perfect the Saints” more or less… how we used to talk so much about avoiding porn etc and now we never hear that sort of thing and it’s worse than ever…
Doubt your doubts.
And if you question church history and notice the church is covering up something, just “doubt your doubts.” No reason to take it off the shelf and give it a fair look and search out the truth.
The Book of Mormon condemns all latter day churches, Mormon 8, 2 Nephi 28…every single one of them, especially the church members who read it. Why would the authors have wasted their breathe on people who would never read it. This is another accurate portrayal of what many are seeing and having the faith to follow Jesus without Russel M Nelson’s approval.
Now I want to hear a mashup of all the 2000s phrases!
There is prophetic council.
And there is pathetic council like safe and effective, a Godsent even. WOW!!!
amen!
My 20 year old daughter's best friend developed blood clots in her lungs after following that council and she is dead.
There are so many people who have a problem with the catchphrases and I just don’t. I LOVE “covenant path” (Greg Madsen has done some great work talking about the significance of this phrase), “think celestial” (great reminder when I’m getting caught up in things that really don’t matter), and “let God prevail”. Sure they come and go but I think if they help you focus on God’s purposes for you NOW then they’re awesome. Super annoying though when people fight about things that could helpful for them if they just turned off their pride.
My main issues with all these catch phrases is an overall cult-like brainwashing vibe with all of them. It is so obvious that these phrases are used to train us like parrots to regurgitate these phrases but not really get too deep with actual doctrine. It is so intellectually lazy to go to church, stake conference, or general conference and just hear vague platitudes (like covenant path, think celestial, you are enough, etc) about a thousand times a meeting.
I have been a member my entire life and understood the milk before meat concept, but now as a middle aged man I am asking, "where is the meat?". BTW, I have studied the majority of past and current church publications, manuals, conference talks, etc. The main problem the church has is that so much of what past prophets said (in the meat category) is no longer being taught OR worse, current prophets are teaching the opposite...........this is why they focus of mindless catch phrases and never get too deep in my opinion.
@@nickdipaolofan5948 Maybe you didn't mean to send me this message directly as a reply but possibly wanted to submit it as a more general message. Either way, I have never felt that cult "vibe". My whole point was that catchphrases can be an easy way to recall to memory deeper concepts and to transfer those ideas quickly to others. I love that latter-day saints have a common language. I don't see past prophets as delivering "meat" while our modern ones are just giving us "milk" - you say you're a middle aged man...I wonder if this is an issue with many men your age. Anacdotedly I know a few men who are in your similar age bracket with similar frustrations and I think it's just a pride issue (I don't know if it is for you but it seems that way for these others). I say live up to your temple covenants - stop speaking evil of the Lord's annointed and get to work in your patch of vineyard.
You forgot the newly ordained way to recycle your plastic bottle 😂
Just do it!
I had a ring made with those words on it!
I grew up in Socal as well... I miss the lingo... lol times were easier back then. lol
So when Mike Wallace asked GBH whether GBH was a prophet and GBH responded "I am sustained as such," that was actually an accurate answer?
GBH wasn't really a prophet who like prophesied about anything?
It's interesting t'so note that between Joseph Smith and David O. McKay, they called themselves "presidents" of the church, NOT prophets. I remember very well a big full-color Postum-table (not coffee table) book with Presidents of the Church (this would have been in the 60's) I've seen seminary manuals from the 50's and 60's that were titled "Presidents of the Church"
Then in the 70's we started referring to them as Prophets. Perhaps in an effort to tighten up correlation?
That would be an interesting word analyisis to do, Connor. How many times in General Conference was the head of the church called president (as opposed to "prophet") and when did the trend start moving in the other direction?
You 90s kids in San Diego sounded like us in Salt Lake
"God's love us unconditional. "
Prophets can see around the corners😢
The irony is that she removed the book “Miracle of Forgiveness” from Deseret Book…didn’t President Kimball see around corners?
It would be awesome if more folks used the 1 John 4:8 phrase “…God is love.”
Sometimes I think Joseph Smith stated that a man is a prophet only when he is acting as one etc..I'll find the exact quote , unless you have it. I think he did that in part, to protect himself . I'm reading more about the early church history from old books and accounts of his life and his counselors. Joseph definitely didn't want to be questioned on anything concerning doctrine. I'm still a member . I definitely know Jesus is coming. I never doubt he is my Savior. I I always pray. I can do that with or without this church. I don't like when leaders say if a person has questions or does not agree with church leaders that it means that person does not believe in Jesus Christ. Or is questioning the authority of Jesus personally. I think it's questioning the church leaders themselves. And we are told NOT to ever question church leaders. That's all I'm saying here . I'm sure many will attack me and say I'm not faithful enough or haven't prayed enough or studied the scriptures enough....none of that is true. We were told if this church is not true ,it would not stand. We all know it is the Faith of the members 💗 that keeps the church going
It is us ..those who minister and serve . Those who strive each day. . I'm not sure how long I can stay. Most of my family left years ago. I grew up Catholic. I joined this church when I was 21. I'm 72 now. . The idea that I can only see and be with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ only happens to those who are sealed in the temple , leaves me out. But I still have access to Jesus ,not both. Okay. I'm fine with that. If I leave and go back to the Catholic Church , I'll still be blessed for my faith in n Jesus
Make and keep (or making and keeping) sacred covenants. Did a cursory search and saw a couple in the 90’s and an explosion in the 2010’s
"Our prophet, even Russell M Nelson."
Keep Sweet and Think Celestial are literally the same thing, one is hated and one is beloved, makes you think
! I never knew that first phrase till I watched the documentary on FLDS. And they are the same! They feel the same. Mind Control at it's best. People don't even know what it takes to qualify for Celestial so just saying the words does not help.
21:17 yeah Mormon would have been a good one to look at the stats for.
I’m curious about “peculiar people” or “in the world not of the world”
That phrase is actually in the Old Testament several times
Does”beloved prophet fall under dear?
Do you think that "covenant path" replaced "the strait and narrow"?
Good point. I think both are used, but it does seem to be taking its place.
It replaced it because they added to it.
David O. McKay, Bruce R. McConkie, and a few others would have helped out on the term of “secret combinations.”
I don’t know, I think this concern of yours is kind of a big nothing-burger. I don’t think the terms you listed from the Church leaders are equivalent to the lingo we use in secular culture.
btw...the clip is from mean girls...😅
Aw, no chart for "with every fiber of my being"?
That's so 10 years ago! haha
Bahaha. Good call. Yes. That’s for sure one proclaimed endlessly from the ramiumptums. Lol.
My grandma said "beyond the shadow of doubt" every month.
What about that huge family with the last name of "forthosethatdon'tknowme"
Here's Two to analyze......"CHOSEN GENERATION" and "LENGTHEN YOUR STRIDE"
How about "return with honor"?
what do you expect from the corporation that relies heavily on a PR dept.? Catch phrases
Another one i suspect is more recent: Higher and Holier
"Garment of the Holy Priesthood"
How about a musing on whether or not we believe April 6 is really Christ's birthday and the hypocrisy of speaking of Christ, teaching of Christ, testifying of Christ, etc. and then celebrating His birth on a pagan holiday. I believe some church presidents have stated their belief in favor of April 6th and others have stated otherwise.
"Let God Prevail" might be interesting to see
Can't stand catch phrases. Members think they are doctrine, at the top of the list is covenant path. Show me that in the scriptures. However I grew up being admonished to stay on the straight and narrow path. That IS in the scriptures.
@@sarahpeacock9686 unfortunately you aren't following commandments.
@@WatchingwaitingG2D Oh brother 🙄 Thank you judge and jury.
@sarahpeacock9686 No problem pretender.
I would like to hear you do a musing on the Kingdom of God, created by Joseph Smith in 1844, and whether or not you think we should/could have defied the US government and not joined the union.
"Judeo-Christian values."
No where in scripture are we told to follow a prophet, ever. Do a word search on the word “follow“ and you’ll have to agree, the Lord tells us to follow him, follow our Savior, follow the spirit, follow Jesus Christ, follow the Holy Ghost, follow God, follow the Lord, etc. etc. But never once does our Heavenly Father tell us to follow a prophet. Brigham Young was the dirty dog that came up with that saying. He said that people didn’t even need scripture when they had him around. He literally said that scripture was worth less than burnt rice hulls. Nothing could be further from the truth. Scripture is worth tons of gold when we are trying to navigate this Earth life and return and live with him. The Lord will never deceive us, never lead us astray, but humans have a very distinct track record of occasionally misleading.
President Nelson, for example, asked all of us to take a very potentially dangerous jab being promoted by the United Nations. Millions of people have died from it, millions of people have serious health issues from it, and millions of other issues are still undiscovered.
The Lord was not kidding when he counseled us to never trust in the arm of flesh.
I got a good scriptural one when “think celestial” craters: “somewhat sober” from Mormon 1:15…😂 Be somewhat sober like Mormon. Not too sober. Little bit of cannabis helps. 😉
Russell Nelson is not a prophet of God. At least not for the God of Israel. Or at least not the God of Israel when they weren’t worshipping Baal.
Skull and Bones.
@@sarahpeacock9686 Indeed. And then Owl & Key.
It was President Kimball that said "lengthen your stride".
From the late 1970's... President Kimball: "Do It"
I just got a CTR brand for Christmas.
